Chapter 9: The Power of the Evil Slave
Yu Shengsheng ignored the sarcasm in Ruzhu's words and walked out quickly. Ruzhu sneered behind him.
There were also the sounds of light and heavy footsteps following her hurriedly.
"Miss, Miss, please stay!"
Mrs. Zhou lowered her voice and said urgently, "If the young lady leaves like this, it will be of no use and will only make her suffer more."
Yu Shengsheng stopped and turned around suddenly.
Mrs. Zhou's face turned red with anxiety, and her right leg tapped the ground in a strange posture.
Yu Shengsheng's throat seemed to be strangled, and her hands were clenched tightly until they became weak and slowly loosened.
When Mrs. Zhou saw her stop, she slowly walked forward and said softly, "Miss, please go back to your room and rest. I will go check it out. If there is any news, report back immediately."
Yu Shengsheng felt as if kerosene was poured into his heart and spread to his limbs. He stared at Mrs. Zhou for a long while before slowly letting out a breath.
"Thank you," she said.
Mrs. Zhou waved her hands quickly: "I dare not."
Ruzhu looked at Yu Shengsheng with her lips curled up to her ears: You useless thing, you dare to compete with the princess for status, bah!
It was almost noon when the distinctive footsteps of Mrs. Zhou were heard. Yu Shengsheng immediately walked out. Before she went down the stairs, she saw Grandma Wu who came with Mrs. Zhou.
When their eyes met, Grandma Wu smiled lovingly, with deep wrinkles spreading out at the corners of her eyes and around her mouth.
"Shengsheng, you didn't eat enough this morning, did you?" Grandma Wu took out a paper bag from her arms, "Look what I brought you."
Yu Shengsheng was a little dazed.
She felt like she was back in the countryside, where she would go hungry when she didn't hunt. Before she reached home, she saw Grandma Wu standing at the entrance of the village looking around. When she saw her come back, she waved with a smile.
"Shengsheng, aren't you full? Look what I brought you."
Sometimes it is half a steamed bun, sometimes it is a piece of wild vegetable cake, and sometimes it is two sweet dates.
That was the only sweetness in her bitter childhood.
Yu Shengsheng's tears, which she had been holding back for a long time, finally burst out.
“Grandma Wu!”
She walked over quickly, hugged Grandma Wu, and sobbed.
Ruzhu was not there. She made an excuse that she had gone to have lunch and had been gone for a long time. Mrs. Zhou quietly retreated to the gate of the courtyard.
Grandma Wu wiped away Yu Shengsheng's tears with her rough fingers: "Don't cry, my dear child, grandma is fine. You don't have to worry about food and clothing here, and Zhuo'er is studying in a private school. It's so good, all thanks to you."
Yu Shengsheng opened her eyes wide with tears, unable to hide her shock and anger: "Zhuo Ge'er is here too?"
Grandma Wu sighed, "Yes, not long ago your aunt went into the mountains to dig for medicinal herbs, and accidentally... fell to her death. Only Zhuo Ge'er and I are left. If I come, he must come too."
Grandma Wu became a widow when she was young. Her son passed away when he was 30 years old, leaving her, her wife and little grandson to depend on each other.
Now that her daughter-in-law had died in an accident, she and her little grandson, both old and young, were taken into the Su family's mansion.
Yu Shengsheng clenched her back teeth and held back her tears: "Grandma, come in, I'll put some medicine on you."
The two men entered the room, and Grandma Wu sat down awkwardly, barely sitting on the edge of the chair, but refused to roll up her trouser legs no matter what.
"It's okay. I've already applied the medicine. I just need to kneel for a while. Country people are thick-skinned and I can bear it."
Grandma Wu changed the subject and stuffed the paper bag into Yu Shengsheng's hand like she was presenting a treasure.
I can smell the sweet fragrance through the paper wrapping, and the paper is soaked. I wonder how much better this kind of snack is than the cold steamed buns and wild vegetable cakes of the past.
Yu Shengsheng's throat was blocked, so she broke off a small piece and put it in her mouth.
"tasty."
Grandma Wu pulled her, feeling distressed: "You've lost weight. Why did you lose so much weight?"
"I've grown taller, so I look thinner, but it's actually okay." Yu Shengsheng had a mouth full of snacks that he couldn't swallow, and his words were unclear.
"Oh, right," Grandma Wu took out a plain silver hairpin wrapped in a handkerchief, "This was given to me by the old lady when I first came here. I was not here when you came of age, so I give you this hairpin as a replacement."
As she spoke, she stood up and carefully inserted the hairpin into Yu Shengsheng's head.
"May Shengsheng be safe, happy and healthy."
There are no fancy words, only the most ordinary and simple wishes.
Yu Shengsheng held back her tears and curved her eyebrows slightly: "Okay."
The age of 15...
When they went to the enclosure, Su Dingqin also said that Su Zhiyi's coming-of-age ceremony would be in a month, and that she and Su Zhiyi had their birthdays on the same day, so they would celebrate it together. She also asked her what gift she wanted.
Before she reached the age of 15, she was taken away from the paddock.
Yu Shengsheng touched the hairpin on her head and said, "Grandma, please wait for me. I will definitely find a way to take you and Zhuo Ge'er away from here."
Suddenly, there was a splash in the yard.
Then there was an angry shout: "Catch the thief!"
Madam Zhao, the old lady's housekeeper, rushed in aggressively with a few maids.
Mrs. Zhou was kicked to the ground. When she struggled to get up, another woman stepped on her shoulders.
Madam Zhao glanced at Yu Shengsheng and without even bending her knees, she pointed at Madam Wu and said, "Catch her for me!"
Several women rolled up their sleeves and rushed forward. Yu Shengsheng blocked them and said calmly, "What are you going to do?"
Aunt Zhao said with a frown: "She is dishonest and stole some snacks."
"If it was anything else, it would be fine, but it had to be the peach blossom cake that the old lady loves to eat."
As she spoke, she waved her hand, and a maid came into the room and took out the snacks that Yu Shengsheng had left over.
Yu Shengsheng looked at the half piece of dessert, it was like a knife stabbing into her eyes, pain and anger licked the tip of the knife and pierced her whole body.
Old lady, this is a warning to her about what happened at the dinner table.
I didn't say anything at that time, but I never thought of letting her go!
