"Why?" Nan Qianyue's eyes reddened. "He was going to be free in a few days. He could have lived a good life. Why did you kill him? He didn't betray you. Even while being tortured, he was still helping you. He was loyal to you. How could you bear to kill him?"
"Because I don't trust Prince Anzheng!" Xiao Chen roared, his eyes filled with intense emotion.
He increased the pressure on his hand, making each word sound like it was being bitten out.
"Nan Nan, do you trust Prince Anzheng that much? You believe him just because he says he'll release him? If he really wanted to release Yan Bo, why did he arrest him in the first place? If he hadn't arrested Yan Bo, he wouldn't have suffered all this!"
"He's not going to release him, he's going to arrest him again."
Nan Qianyue chuckled lightly, "So you're certain that Qin Yi will keep pressing Yan Bo until he reveals your spy? And then you'll leak the information to the old emperor, using him to kill Yan Bo?!"
“My bodyguards sent you a message saying that Qin Yi will pull a switcheroo in a few days and release Yan Bo. You don’t believe it. You think it’s Qin Yi’s conspiracy. Xiao Chen stared intently at her, the veins on his temples bulging slightly. He lowered his voice and said, "Isn't that right?"
Nan Qianyue, tears welling in her eyes, pulled her hand away from his. "Is this your reason for killing Uncle Yan?!"
She recalled Yan Bo's state yesterday, feeling both pain and hatred. "What kind of bewitching potion did you give Yan Bo? He knew it was poisoned, yet he still willingly drank it. You are not worthy to be his master!"
Xiao Chen grabbed her shoulders again, his eyes almost frantic. "Why do you trust Prince Anzheng so much, but not me? How do you know he's not lying to you?"
"He values talent; he won't kill Uncle Yan!"
"But it all started because he arrested Yan Bo! It all began because of him! He got to play both the bad and the good, yet you trusted him and protected him! And you blame me..."
The tears in Nanqianyue's eyes were so full that they fell in the blink of an eye.
She said weakly but firmly, "If you were on opposing sides, would you let go of the spy den right in front of you?"
"You won't do that. Not only will you catch the spy, you'll also squeeze every last drop of value out of him before finally killing him!"
