Chapter 140 Misunderstanding
Lu Yao's WeChat video call was suddenly connected, revealing the somewhat pretty face of her female assistant.
She lowered her head and pretended to look through documents on the computer. She looked very busy, her hair hanging in front of her forehead and her fingertips tapping quickly on the keyboard.
The sunlight from outside Bai Lang's office window slanted in through the glass, casting a thin strip of light on the desk.
"Who are you? Why did you just answer my husband's video call?" Lu Yao said coldly, her eyes fixed on the phone screen in disbelief.
"Please don't disturb my work." The female assistant said arrogantly, as if answering this video call was just a small episode in her work.
Her finger slid lightly across the mouse, clicking on a folder, and the file icons were neatly arranged on the monitor.
On the other end of the line was Lu Yao's rapid breathing, "Where's Bai Lang? I want to find him!"
Her voice was sharp and filled with suppressed anger, like the last cry of someone forced into a desperate situation.
The female assistant remained expressionless, her eyes fixed on the screen as she continued to scroll the mouse. "He's very busy and doesn't have time to video chat with you."
Her tone was flat, as if she was stating an insignificant fact.
"What qualifications do you have to answer his private phone?" Lu Yao's voice became more intense.
It was almost a roar, and the burning anger could be felt through the screen.
The female assistant finally stopped what she was doing and looked up at the camera, her eyes so calm they were almost icy. "I told you, he's very busy."
Her voice was calm, as if she was stating something perfectly normal. "If you have anything, you can tell me."
Lu Yao was so angry that she fell silent. Only a faint gasp could be heard, as if someone was pinching her throat, and she was in pain but unable to break free.
A moment later, Lu Yao's voice rang out again, "Fox spirit, just wait for me."
Suddenly, Bai Lang's face appeared over there, "Yaoyao, who are you scolding? I just went to the bathroom and left my phone on the desk."
The air in the office seemed to freeze for a moment, and cold air slowly flowed out from the air-conditioning vent, blowing away the strands of hair around the female assistant's ears.
Her fingers were tightly gripping the edge of the phone, her knuckles turning white from the force. She thought the other party was a liar, but she didn't expect that her boss actually knew him!
But Bai Lang never dreamed that the female assistant would dare to embarrass the eldest daughter of the Lu family, so Bai Lang's expression on the screen remained normal.
Seeing Lu Yao staring at him angrily without saying anything, he showed a hint of fatigue between his brows, and his suit and tie were tied meticulously below his Adam's apple.
He raised his hand and adjusted the buttons on his cuffs, his voice low and steady.
"Lu Yao, why are you angry? I just came out of the bathroom, and my phone was on the table."
His gaze passed through the screen and met Lu Yao's gaze directly. An unpredictable emotion flashed in his eyes. "Yaoyao, why aren't you talking?"
Lu Yao's chest heaved, and she stared at him intently, as if trying to find some flaw in this familiar face.
"I just sent a few voice messages, and they were all answered by this female assistant. She even dared to answer your video."
Her voice was hoarse, and every word seemed to be squeezed out from between her teeth. "She said you were not here."
Bai Lang frowned slightly, his lips pressed into a straight line, looking somewhat helpless, "She didn't lie, I wasn't here!"
His voice remained steady, as if he was explaining a trivial and ordinary matter.
"Bai Lang, have you ever liked me?" Lu Yao's voice suddenly rose, almost penetrating the screen.
"Yaoyao, I'm really busy. Can you please stop being unreasonable?" Bai Lang frowned.
"I'm making a fuss? Then why is she allowed to come and go freely in your office? And even take your private videos at will?"
Bai Lang looked at Lu Yao on the other side of the video with an innocent face, and wanted to say, isn't his assistant there to help him with his work?
But he didn't want to explain so many work matters, so he lowered his eyes, and his slender fingers unconsciously stroked the pen on the table.
"Bai Lang, tell me? Why aren't you talking? Is there something wrong with you?" Lu Yao asked hysterically.
"She is my assistant, and it is her responsibility to handle some daily affairs."
Bai Lang's tone remained calm, but with a hint of distance in it. "Yaoyao, don't think too much."
Lu Yao felt as if something was grabbing her heart tightly, with nails almost digging into her palms. The pain made her sober up a little.
She stared at Bai Lang on the screen; those familiar facial features now looked so strange.
It was as if there was an invisible membrane between them, distorting even their voices.
"It's your fault, and you want me to stop thinking too much?" Lu Yao's voice became low.
It was like a cold, wet stone fished out of a deep well, so heavy that it made it hard to breathe. "Bai Lang, what do you think I'm thinking?"
Bai Lang paused slightly, the pen spun around his fingertips, and finally stopped on the table with a slight clattering sound.
He raised his gaze again and looked directly at Lu Yao, his eyes as deep as a bottomless lake.
"Yaoyao," his voice softened, as if trying to soothe her emotions, "there's no need for us to argue over such a trivial matter."
"A small matter?" A mocking smile flashed in Lu Yao's eyes, and the corners of her lips curled up slightly.
But the smile did not reach his eyes, "Bai Lang, do you think this is a small matter?"
Bai Lang did not answer immediately. Instead, he took a deep breath, crossed his hands on the table, and leaned forward slightly.
She seemed to be choosing her words carefully. "Yaoyao, I just hope you won't let these trivial misunderstandings affect our relationship."
His voice was still gentle, but it contained a hint of fatigue.
There are tall buildings outside the window, and the sunlight shines on the glass curtain wall, reflecting a dazzling light.
Lu Yao's gaze passed over Bai Lang's shoulder and fell on the dazzling light and shadow.
In a trance, I seemed to see that the sweet daily life between them was as gorgeous but short-lived as the light and shadow.
In an instant, she remembered that the two of them had been chasing and hiding for a long time.
Lu Yao's fingers trembled slightly, and the phone screen became a little blurry in her palm.
Her voice was low, like a stream of air squeezed out from the depths of her throat: "Bai Lang, have you ever thought about why I care so much about these 'trivial misunderstandings'?"
Bai Lang frowned slightly, staring at her face, as if trying to find the answer from her expression.
He didn't respond immediately, but just waited quietly for her next words. In fact, he felt that she was a little puzzling.
Lu Yao's eyes felt slightly hot, and she tried hard to control her emotions and not let the tears fall.
"Bai Lang, your current attitude reminds me that we have never been sweet at all."
Bai Lang's expression froze slightly, and his fingertips tapped lightly on the table a few times, as if he was thinking about something.
