Chapter 23: Fighting for Manure
The sky is getting light.
"Yu'er, be careful when you go to the county today. If, if the academy doesn't work out, it's okay to stay overnight for a year or two." The beautiful mother brought her lily and lotus seed porridge early in the morning. When she saw Xiao Jiuyue, she couldn't hide the worry in her eyes.
Xiao Jiuyue comforted her, "Don't worry, Mom. I'm with Chief Steward Jin and Jin Wu and his son. Ordinary thieves can't do anything to me."
"Well, you must bring the lotus heart and the loquat with you." The beautiful lady reminded again.
Xiao Jiuyue nodded: "Okay." She buried her head in drinking the porridge, listening to the beautiful mother's repeated and concerned words, and did not feel impatient at all.
"Mom, I'll bring you something delicious when I come back." Xiao Jiuyue put down the bowl of porridge. She had always been alone, but now that someone cared about her, she was in a very good mood.
Xiao Jiuyue led her people out of the yard. This was the first time she left the old house since arriving in Hongdu.
The old house of the Xiao family is located halfway up the mountain, with endless green hills behind it. Standing at the door of the old house, you can see a wide view of the winding river that disappears into the mountains and forests. Along both sides of the river, houses are scattered in an orderly manner in the shade of bamboo forests.
It is morning now, and there is still a thin mist on the top of the mountain. Smoke is curling up from every household, like a beautiful picture scroll.
The warm October sun shone through the layers of mist. She took a deep breath, and even the air was filled with a sweet smell: "It's so beautiful."
What Xiao Jiuyue saw was beautiful scenery, but what Lianxin saw was desolation. Her eldest daughter had lived a life of luxury since she was a child, so how could she have been to such a desolate place?
"Miss, it takes half an hour from here to the county." Lianxin lifted the door curtain, and Luokui stepped forward to support Xiao Jiuyue and said, "Miss, be careful."
"I'm feeling better." Xiao Jiuyue lifted her skirt and stepped directly onto the carriage.
"Miss, sit tight." Manager Jin led the carriage, and he and his son Jin Wu drove the carriage slowly.
Not long after they had gone, the carriage stopped. A foul smell of manure wafted into the air, and a fierce voice rang out: "Goudan's mother, you dare to steal manure from my house? I'll fight you!"
"Xiang Sanniang, stop talking nonsense. Who stole your manure?" Goudan's mother rolled her eyes in anger. She felt so distressed when she saw the manure spilled all over the ground. If it was poured on the vegetables, her radishes and cabbages would surely grow well this year!
Goudan's mother snatched the remaining dung bucket and said, "This was clearly given by your son."
"Do you want a carrying pole from me?" Xiang Sanniang picked up the carrying pole and hit Goudan's mother hard.
Goudan's mother looked at the carrying pole that was hit at her and said, "Go and hit your son if you have the guts. This is a gift from your son." Goudan's mother grabbed the half bucket of manure and ran away.
"You bastard." Xiang Sanniang wanted to follow him, but was stopped by Xiang Tiegen who was standing beside her. He said, "Mom, this is really a gift from me..."
Before he could finish the last two words, Xiang Sanniang's carrying pole hit Xiang Tiegen on the butt.
It was a powerful blow, and even though Xiao Jiuyue was sitting in the carriage at a distance, he could hear it clearly.
Manager Jin raised his whip and swung it into the air. Xiang Sanniang, who was beating her son, shuddered. When she saw the carriage, she was so frightened that she knelt down and said, "Please spare me, my lord! We'll clean up the manure right now."
Xiang Sanniang said this without her having to say anything. Xiang Tiegen, who had just been beaten, took the shovel and shoveled the mud and manure into the bucket. Even when his hand was cut by the shovel, he did not slow down.
Xiao Jiuyue was amazed by the agility and speed of the mother and son's movements.
"This, this is too exaggerated, just for a pick..." Lianxin pinched her nose, and did not say the word "manure water". She quickly lifted the curtain to ventilate the carriage.
Luo Kui lit some incense, and soon, only the fragrance filled the carriage. Luo Kui said, "Everyone in the village is like this, grabbing good farmland, grabbing water, grabbing manure. Miss, don't think manure is bad, but if you want vegetables to grow well, it's indispensable."
"Luo Kui, how can I eat vegetables in the future if you say that?" Lian Xin couldn't eat anymore when she thought of that scene.
Xiao Jiuyue chuckled: "Luo Kui is right, Lian Xin, this manure water is a good thing."
Lianxin: "..."Miss, you have changed.
"What do you think of that mother and son just now?" Xiao Jiuyue's sudden question made Lianxin and Luokui both stunned for a moment. Before Lianxin could say anything, Luokui interrupted, "Miss, that son must like that girl. Otherwise, how could he be willing to give her sewage?"
"Who's pursuing a young lady and bringing her dung?" Lian Xin's mouth twitched. "Miss, we haven't even spoken yet, and that woman knelt down and begged for mercy. I think it's because Madam Gan and the others were too overbearing in the past that... that's why she's so scared."
Xiao Jiuyue's eyes flickered slightly, and Luo Kui said, "How is that possible? Isn't it normal for someone to beg for mercy?"
"Luo Kui, he's begging for mercy, but he's begging for his life!" Lian Xin reminded him, "If something like this hadn't happened before, why would he be shaking like a sieve with fear?"
"Miss, just now I saw that woman trembling with fear. Although her son didn't say anything, his hands were cut when he was digging... the dirty soil, but he didn't slow down at all." Lianxin observed very carefully.
Luo Kui frowned, her eyes full of doubt: "Is there?"
Lian Xin turned her head away from her, Luo Kui was interested in food, and the slightest fragrance was like a dog's nose.
"Lianxin, ask someone to check it out later." Xiao Jiuyue looked at the scenery receding outside the window. The shaking carriage made her sleepy.
Lianxin and Luokui looked at each other and shut their mouths at the same time.
"Miss, we're here in Lancang County." Lianxin said in a low voice.
Xiao Jiuyue opened her eyes, she woke up and looked out the window. The street was very busy, the hawkers' cries were endless, there were shops on both sides, and the signs hanging on the doors of the shops made it clear at a glance what the shops were selling.
A string of wooden combs, a hanging oil bottle, and a jar of wine painted on the shop sign!
Xiao Jiuyue: "It's quite lively."
"This is far worse than Shengjing. The streets are so crowded and narrow." Luo Kui frowned.
Lianxin quietly poked Luokui's hands and feet, and Luokui said, "Originally..." That's right.
Luo Kui hadn't finished her words when she noticed the look in Lotus Heart Envoy's eyes. She looked at Xiao Jiuyue and quickly changed her words, "Although it's a little small, it sells everything and it's quite lively."
Luo Kui lowered her head. She felt that she couldn't even speak.
How could Xiao Jiuyue not understand what they were thinking? She said, "Shengjing is indeed prosperous, but this small town is peaceful."
"Yes, An Yi." Luo Kui agreed repeatedly.
Lian Xin smiled and asked, "Miss, where are we going now?"
