Nangong Chiyu told the thirty Chiyu soldiers and the village chief to go back together first.
He and Su Luo were the last to arrive home.
He suddenly squatted down on the way, his face contorted in pain, which startled Su Luo.
"Nangong Chiyu, how are you? Are you injured?"
Su Luo lifted his hands and clothes to check; he was clean, and the bandits couldn't have hurt him at all.
Suddenly, Su Luo was embraced by a pair of huge arms, and she could hear Nangong Chiyu's chuckle in her ear.
"Nangong Chiyu, you're playing me again! Get away from me..."
Su Luo was no match for him; she pushed his arm away, but he didn't budge an inch.
"I won't leave. If I didn't do this, how would I know you care about me?"
"You're overthinking it. Who cares about you?"
"Luo Luo, I care about you."
Lights were on in every household in the village, and the flickering candlelight spilled from other people's windows onto the two of them.
He brushed a strand of hair from her forehead and tucked it behind her ear, his smile warm and doting, his eyes filled with nothing but her.
Su Luo was mesmerized. His smile blended perfectly with the May evening breeze. Every time she looked at him, she had to tilt her head back, and he would always bend down for her.
"Luo Luo, let's go home!"
"Um!"
Nangong Chiyu released Su Luo and walked along the cobblestone path through the crowded Changping Village under the eaves.
The road is so narrow that two people can only walk together by holding hands.
This road is so short, so short that I got home so quickly.
With such a big incident in the village, everyone from the Chen family got up. Zhao Ruyun finally breathed a sigh of relief when she saw the two of them return unharmed.
Just as she was about to ask if everything had been resolved, she saw Nangong Chiyu enter holding Su Luo's hand, making the question no longer important.
He then turned to Chunhua beside him and instructed her to do something quickly.
Once inside, Su Luo pulled her hand away; it wasn't appropriate for the two of them to act like this in front of so many people at home.
"Luo Luo, Huai Xu, have you taken care of everything in the village? Where is Magistrate Jiang?"
Magistrate Jiang was originally summoned by Su Luo, who told him to wait at home until bandits actually arrived, at which point she would call him out to make a decision.
"The bandits have been captured, and Magistrate Jiang has taken them back to the county."
Judging from Su Luo and the other person's reactions, the village should not have suffered any losses.
"That's good. You two are filthy in the middle of the night. I'll have Qiuyue boil some water so you can go wash up and then go to rest."
"Yes! Thank you, Grandma."
Su Luo felt that having such a caring mother-in-law was a blessing from heaven. She also had a son and a daughter, plus the occasional annoyance of Nangong Chiyu, so her life was complete.
After washing up and changing into clean clothes, Su Luo and Nangong Chiyu returned to the room almost at the same time.
Seeing the changes in the room, Su Luo turned around and questioned the person next to her.
"Nangong Chiyu, did you do this?"
Nangong Chiyu did nothing. He had just finished washing up and came upstairs, thinking about making out with his wife before bed.
To everyone's surprise, his makeshift bed on the floor was gone as soon as he arrived.
"Luo Luo, it's not me."
Su Luo recalled that when she returned home earlier, she seemed to have seen Chunhua come to the front yard. It seemed that it was her mother-in-law's idea again.
"Autumn moon, autumn moon..."
Su Luo called for a while but no one responded. She opened the window and looked outside. All the lights in both the east and west courtyards were off.
It seems no one is going to pay attention to her tonight.
She went to open the closet herself. She remembered that there were still her clean bedding inside, but Su Luo forgot that her mother-in-law wanted the two of them to share a room, so why would she leave her a blanket?
"Luo Luo, you can't really bear to see me sleeping on the floor, can you?"
Nangong Chiyu was thrilled; his mother was the only one who truly understood him.
Su Luo ignored him. It was the middle of the night, and all she wanted to do was sleep. She got into bed and covered her head with the blanket.
She was petite, leaving plenty of space for Nangong Chiyu outside the bed.
Seeing that his wife had finally accepted him, Nangong Chiyu jumped faster than a monkey, threw off the covers, and put his arm around his wife's waist.
Su Luo turned around and leaned against Nangong Chiyu's chest, instantly losing all sleepiness.
“Nangong Chiyu, you schemed against me, you, your mother-in-law, Yanchuan Yihuan, you are all birds of a feather.”
Nangong Chiyu hugged her even tighter, kissing her forehead with his lips, and she could clearly feel the warmth of his breath.
"I dare not!"
“What are you afraid of? It would have been better if you hadn’t come back. As soon as you came back, you took your mother-in-law away, and your son and daughter are on your side. You’ve taken everything that belongs to me.”
Nangong Chiyu propped his head up with his hands, his deep eyes filled with tenderness and affection.
“I didn’t steal them. They are your family, and so am I. They are now, and they always will be. Everything I have is yours.”
Upon hearing this confession, Su Luo blushed. He lowered his head and finally tasted his wife's soft, sweet lips.
Outside the window, mountains rise one after another, and moonlight shines through the valleys onto the streams, which flow gently, enjoying the moonlight's caress.
The sounds of insects and cicadas fill the air, and the babbling brook creates a scene reminiscent of an ancient black-and-white ink painting.
But the weather in May is unpredictable; dark clouds obscured the moonlight, and suddenly bursts of fire appeared, with streaks of lightning piercing through the clouds.
It also illuminated the dark forest, frightened the cicadas, and drowned out the melodious babbling of the mountain stream.
Su Luo knew that drought was undesirable during the planting season, and heavy rain was coming.
That's how it is during the Grain in Ear season. The heavy rain is like a joke, falling one after another, sometimes drizzling, sometimes with thunder and lightning, until it stops at dawn.
The next day was another beautiful day.
The weather was changing too frequently and the humidity was too high, which made her feel sore and tired, and she couldn't feel refreshed even after sleeping until noon.
The Chen residence was unusually quiet today, and no one came to disturb her. When Su Luo woke up, she touched the side of her and found that Nangong Chiyu was no longer there.
She opened her eyes and realized she had slept until midday.
"Autumn Moon, what time is it now?"
Hearing Su Luo's call, Qiu Yue hurriedly went into the bedroom to get Su Luo a change of clothes.
"Madam, it is now a quarter past noon."
It was so late, and Su Luo was in a hurry to get up. A soreness came from her waist, which made her frown.
"Madam, are you alright?"
Su Luo is fine; she can stand up again if she can just bear it.
"Qiuyue, why didn't you wake me up today?"
As Qiuyue prepared Su Luo's clothes for the day, she spoke.
“It was the master who told us not to wake you, saying you were tired. He also instructed me to boil water for you, saying that you would definitely want to take a bath when you woke up.”
Su Luo touched her body; it was sticky and covered in sweat. She felt disgusted with herself for not taking a shower.
It's all Nangong Chiyu's fault! He went too far.
"Oh! Where is the master? Where did he go?"
"Master took the young master and young lady to practice boxing today. After the young master went to the academy, he went up the mountain to pick bayberries for the madam. He should be back soon."
Even after what happened last night, Nangong Chiyu still has so much energy; his physical condition is truly amazing.
