Chapter 36 Becoming an Apprentice

The next morning, Nangong Qing had someone deliver the ingredients. Su Luo had promised to cook for him for three days, and he really didn't delay even for a day.

"Madam Su, our young master said that if there are too many ingredients, you can keep some to eat," said the waiter from Fu Man Lou.

"Okay, I understand."

Su Luo looked at the ingredients. There were several dishes that could be made into the recipes she gave Nangong Qing yesterday. Why not just make them according to that recipe? Nangong Qing would know as soon as he tasted them whether the food made by Fu Man Lou's kitchen was right.

Su Luo acted immediately, while Zhao Ruyun learned how to grind ink, and now she dedicates herself to helping her two grandsons with their calligraphy.

While cooking for Nangong Qing, Su Luo also prepared their lunch. The waiter took the dishes back to Fumanlou Restaurant, and Su Luo wanted to finish eating quickly so she could teach Yanchuan and Yihuan.

Shortly after noon, another carriage arrived at the kiln. Du Xiuyuan brought two people with large and small bags.

He had never been to Changping Village before, and only after asking around did he learn that Su Luo's family was now living in a kiln at the end of the village. He had come to find Su Luo with a purpose.

"Lady Su, are you home?"

Du Xiuyuan called out from outside the fence.

Zhao Ruyun went to open the door for someone; she didn't recognize Du Xiuyuan.

Who are you?

Judging from Zhao Ruyun's age and attire, Du Xiuyuan figured she must be Su Luo's mother-in-law: "You must be Su Niangzi's mother-in-law. I am Doctor Du from Ji'an Hall. I'm here to see Su Niangzi."

Zhao Ruyun of Ji'an Hall knew that Su Luo took the herbs there to sell, and that Doctor Du was probably the one who collected the herbs.

"So it's Dr. Du. Please come in and have a seat."

Su Luo didn't know why Du Xiuyuan had suddenly come to find her. She walked over and said, "Dr. Du, is there something you need?"

Du Xiuyuan had the gifts brought up, which included not only various kinds of good medicinal herbs, but also a luminous pearl, not to mention the lingzhi tonic.

The century-old ginseng in the box placed in front of Su Luo was already quite valuable.

"Dr. Du, what are you doing?" Su Shilu couldn't understand why he was bringing so many nice things to her house when she hadn't done anything to help him.

“Madam Su!” Du Xiuyuan stood in front of Su Luo, then bowed and said earnestly, “Madam Su, I have come to ask to become your disciple and teach me medicine.”

Su Luo: "..."

"This...this..."

Not to mention Zhao Ruyun was shocked, even Su Luo was stunned.

"Dr. Du, please don't bow to me yet. You must have made a mistake." Su Luo said, pulling Du Xiuyuan up with both hands to stop him from bowing to her.

Du Xiuyuan is old enough to be considered an elder, yet he's bowing before me. What kind of behavior is this?

“Madam Su, I’m not mistaken. I’m genuinely seeking knowledge. Your external wound treatment skills are absolutely amazing. Wang Dayong’s wife’s wound was completely healed in less than five days.”

"You were able to bring someone who was certain of death back to life; I have witnessed your exceptional medical skills. It may be presumptuous of me to come and ask to become your disciple today, but I am truly eager to learn. Please, Madam Su, accept me as your apprentice."

“Dr. Du, this is not appropriate. How can I be your mentor? Besides, my medical skills are really not as good as you imagine.”

Su Luo does know medicine, but she has almost entirely taught herself. In her previous life, she was paralyzed for ten years, and she spent ten years studying medicine. She is quite good at surgery and has also learned a lot about traditional Chinese medicine and herbal preparation. She also learned acupuncture to heal her hands and legs, but she still can't even take a pulse.

Because in her previous life, her experimental subjects were either zombies or dead people, and dead people have no pulse.

"Dr. Du, you've only seen me deliver Zhang's baby, but you don't know that I can't even take a pulse. Do you really believe that someone who can't even take a pulse can have any profound medical skills?"

Du Xiuyuan said with unusual determination, "Madam Su, you don't know how to take a pulse, but I do. What I want to learn is the kind of medicine that doesn't require taking a pulse. Your medical skills are something I've never seen before, but I know they can save lives. I've thought about this a lot these past few days."

If Zhang had been in my hands that day and asked me to perform a cesarean section to give birth to her child, could I have saved her life? I thought about it and realized I couldn't; I didn't have that ability.

But you, Madam Su, when you made this suggestion to Wang Dayong, you already knew you could save the mother, which is why you dared to make the suggestion.

Lady Su, your skill and medical expertise are beyond my reach.

I have come here today after careful consideration; please accept me.

Du Xiuyuan came to Su Luo to become her disciple, begging and bowing repeatedly. Zhao Ruyun, being of the same age, couldn't stand by and watch, so she quietly slipped away while the two were talking.

Yan Chuan and Yi Huan also stopped writing and looked over.

"Practice your handwriting. Children shouldn't meddle in adult matters." Zhao Ruyun stood in front of the two children, telling them to focus on their own work.

"Dr. Du, I really can't be your teacher. Take these things back. I have nothing to teach you."

Su Luo spoke from the heart, but Du Xiuyuan didn't hear it that way. He felt that Su Luo was rejecting him.

"Does Madam Su think I'm old?"

"No! Doctor Du is a highly respected doctor in Yongle County. Your medical skills are already excellent. I really have nothing to teach you."

Du Xiuyuan was a little disappointed, but he wouldn't give up.

"Madam Su, I'm serious."

"Dr. Du, we can discuss medical issues we don't understand, but you really don't need to become his apprentice. You should take these valuable items back with you."

Su Luo tidied up the things Du Xiuyuan had sent. These were all rare and precious items. In order to become his apprentice, Du Xiuyuan had brought all his good things.

The two people who had just brought the things in were made to move them out again, just as they were before.

As soon as the two stepped out of the fenced gate, they bumped into someone. Luckily, they managed to protect their belongings so they didn't fall to the ground.

"Yan Chuan's mother, Yan Chuan's mother, save me!"

Li Niu was in such a hurry that he didn't even realize he had bumped into someone. He was carrying Aunt Li on his back and was covered in sweat.

"Yan Chuan's mother, please save my wife."

In this emergency, Li Niu didn't have time to go to the county to find a doctor. Su Luo had taught the villagers how to save lives before, and Li Niu, in his desperation, pinned his hopes on Su Luo, hoping she could save his wife.

"Uncle Li, what's wrong with Aunt Li?"

Su Luo saw Aunt Li on Li Niu's back, her face pale and foaming at the mouth, looking like she was about to die. Aunt Li had been chatting and laughing with her just yesterday; her illness came on so suddenly.

"Dr. Du, please take a look at Aunt Li's health."

There wasn't enough time to carry her into the kiln, so Li Niu had to put Aunt Li on the ground.

Du Xiuyuan immediately squatted down to take Aunt Li's pulse. The pulse was weak and feeble.

"Oh no, she's been poisoned," Du Xiuyuan said.
