Chapter 7: The Illness Returns

Luo Mei and Chen Xique embraced each other and wept bitterly: "Mother, that was my dowry!"

Luo Mei knew perfectly well that it was something her daughter had her eye on, but she had to save Chen Dazhi first.

“Magpie, your dowry will definitely be replaced with new ones. Luckily, Huang Mazi doesn’t know where your brother works in the county shop, otherwise he would have gone to make trouble for your brother.”

Chen Mengqing's job as an accountant cannot be lost, as Chen Xique knows. His brother earns five hundred coins a month, which is their family's biggest source of income.

In the afternoon, Luo Mei went to the county and sold two acres of land to get twenty taels of silver to save Chen Dazhi. The fields were already planted with rice seedlings.

Huang Mazi walked along the main road in Changping Village. Two middle-aged women passing by ignored him, preoccupied with gossiping.

"Have you heard? It seems that Yan Chuan's mother's madness has been cured. This morning she went to the county with Li Niu. It seems she sold something and made a lot of money."

Another said, "No wonder. At noon I saw her carrying two big bundles and her basket was full. She must have made some money."

Huang Mazi stopped and turned to look at the two women who had walked away. Er Gouzi leaned closer to Huang Mazi and said, "Brother, are they talking about that crazy woman who hurt you yesterday? Has she made a fortune?"

Huang Mazi sneered: "She actually managed to sell things in the county. The county is my territory. Next time she goes there, you guys keep a close eye on her. I will definitely get my revenge."

...

Su Luo took a wooden basin to the river to wash clothes. There were many other women washing clothes by the river, including Uncle Li's wife, Aunt Li. She greeted Su Luo when she saw her.

"Yan Chuan's mother, I have a spot here, come and wash here."

Everyone else wanted to stay away from Su Luo, fearing that she would have another attack.

“Yan Chuan’s mother, I heard from my husband that you are cured. Now it seems that you really are cured.”

Su Luo took out the clothes and said to Aunt Li with a smile, "They're all done."

When Su Luo was about to do the laundry, she realized that she had nothing. She did have a lot of laundry detergent and liquid in her space, but there were many people around, and she couldn't take them out in front of them.

When Aunt Li saw Su Luo's stunned expression, she smiled and took out several soap pods for Su Luo: "Did you forget to bring soap pods? I brought a lot, you can take them."

"Thanks!"

Su Luo looked at the woman in front of her. She was slightly plump and had a pretty face. She didn't seem to be sick. How could she not have children? Could it be Uncle Li's problem?

After washing the clothes, Aunt Li said goodbye to Su Luo and went home first.

The other women were all some distance from Su Luo. The river water was crystal clear, and Su Luo couldn't remember the last time she had stepped into such water.

Having been paralyzed for ten years in my previous life, I could be considered a doctor through long illness, barely surviving by hiding from zombies and artillery shells every day. It is a great blessing that I can have these legs now.

As Su Luo thought this, her feet unconsciously stepped into the river. The coolness of the water flowed over her ankles and slowly down her legs. It was a feeling she hadn't experienced in a long time.

Su Luo wanted to wade deeper, even deeper.

"Oh no, this is terrible! Yan Chuan's mother has fallen ill again. She's trying to drown herself!"

"Something terrible has happened! Help!"

Several such sounds suddenly rang out from the riverbank, and Su Luo came to her senses. She realized that she had almost reached the middle of the river, which was also about a meter deep.

Su Luo watched as four or five women ran towards her across the river, and the scene actually warmed her heart.

The two men grabbed Su Luo and forcibly pulled her ashore: "Yan Chuan's mother, don't do anything rash! You still have two children, please don't do anything foolish."

Su Luo did not resist them. When she reached the shore, she smiled and said, "Sisters, you've misunderstood. I didn't want to commit suicide. I just wanted to play in the water."

Seeing that she was speaking normally, the others were relieved and asked, "Really?"

"real!"

After some more persuasion, everyone finally felt relieved and left. Su Luo finished washing the clothes and it was time for her to go home.

Before they even reached the kiln, Zhao Ruyun rushed over. Upon seeing her, she quickly checked on her: "Luo Luo, are you alright? Aunt Wang just told me that you fell ill again in the river."

Su Luo was surprised that news spread quickly in the village, and Zhao Ruyun found out about her incident by the river so soon.

"I'm fine. They misunderstood and thought I was having a seizure. I'm fine now."

Back at the kiln, Zhao Ruyun took the clothes to air them out, while Yan Chuan brought out mung bean cakes and handed them to Su Luo: "Mother, these are what we saved for you to eat, but you haven't eaten them yet."

Su Luo saw that there were two more pastries inside. She gave one to Yi Huan and placed the other in Yan Chuan's hand, saying, "You two eat them. I don't like sweet things."

Then Su Luo asked Zhao Ruyun, "Mother-in-law, do we have dry land to grow vegetables?"

Zhao Ruyun walked over and pointed to Su Luo, saying, "That dry land at the foot of the mountain over there belongs to our family. I planted some soybeans and cucumbers there, but the cucumbers have only just flowered and haven't fruited yet. Oh, and there are also chives, but those chives never grow tall; they're eaten as soon as they grow a little."

When Zhao Ruyun said these things, her eyes were full of bitterness.

Su Luo turned and went into the kiln, avoiding the gazes of the others. She stared intently at the eggplants and peppers growing in her space. As long as they were in the space, they wouldn't spoil even after being picked, as the space had a preservation function. These things couldn't be taken out, but the seeds could.

Su Luoxin took a packet of eggplant seeds, tore open the packaging, poured them into a cloth, and showed it to Zhao Ruyun.

“Grandma, these are seeds I met in the county from a foreign businessman. I’ve seen this kind of seed before when I was with my master. It’s called eggplant, and it’s an edible vegetable. We’re going to plant it this year too. Could you leave me a little space on that dry land so I can plant it?”

Zhao Ruyun had never heard of eggplant, but Su Luo said it was something her master knew, so it must be something good. Her master was very likely a reclusive master, which Zhao Ruyun believed.

"Okay, I'll reserve the land for you."

In the evening, Su Luo started stewing the pork bones she had bought. The young man simmered them slowly, as the two little ones were too thin and needed to be nourished.

Seeing Su Luo cooking, Yi Huan had already run over to watch the fire for her.

Zhao Ruyun started cooking the rice. The pork and shepherd's purse stir-fry from lunch wasn't finished yet, so she just heated it up and it was ready to eat. With the milky white pork bone soup, it was fresh, fragrant, and smooth, making dinner a little simpler.

next day

Su Luotian got up before dawn, picked up her basket early and went up the mountain. She dug up the few Smilax glabra plants she had seen yesterday. There was no oxcart to take her to the county today, so she had to go and come back as soon as possible.

We dug up about 30 jin (15 kg). On the way down the mountain, we saw that the honeysuckle by the roadside was in bloom. Although honeysuckle is also a medicinal herb, the price is probably not high. Su Luo noted the good location and said she would bring Yan Chuan and Yi Huan to pick some next time to make tea at home.

Su Luo went up the mountain at dawn, and it was now morning. She was carrying more than 30 kilograms of Smilax glabra and it took her an hour to reach the county.

Upon arriving at Ji'an Hall, the shopkeeper immediately spotted Su Luo. She had changed her clothes and looked much more energetic than yesterday.
