Chapter 15 Burning of Qingyun Nunnery

"Is that all?"

Jinghe hid behind a pillar and watched as the seemingly weak Qi Shizhu carried a burly man who was a head taller than her and stuffed him into the room of Abbess Yuanze.

I don't know how she did it, but the two people in the room seemed to be fast asleep, and there was no movement at all.

Qi Su shook her head at her.

That's not enough.

She reached out her hand, letting Jinghe hand her the iron chain.

This was torn off the door of the grain depot on the way here.

Qi Su wrapped the iron chain around Yuan Ze's door.

In this way, the person inside cannot break free and can only be freed by the person outside.

"Go back, go back?" Jinghe asked tremblingly.

I never imagined that one day I would be so audacious as to become an accomplice to such a madman...

Being an accomplice can be exciting too.

The thought of Abbess Yuanze and her lover being discovered in public tomorrow...

I want to scream right now.

Compared to this novice with trembling hands and dizzy eyes, Qi, the main implementer, seemed much calmer.

With her slender, fair fingers, she slowly and deliberately wrapped the iron chain around herself, one loop at a time.

Then he strolled over at a leisurely pace.

Jinghe grabbed her hand tightly, her heart pounding in her throat.

"Quick, quick, let's go before we get spotted!"

Master Qi shook his head and whispered, "How can we not be discovered? We have to be discovered."

She pushed Jinghe's hand away.

"You go back first, I'll go and do something else for a while."

What are you busy with?

Jinghe will soon find out.

She stared blankly as Qi Su brought out oil and firewood from the kitchen, lit a tinderbox, and tossed it in.

Before long, flames soared into the sky from the monks' quarters and guest courtyard of Qingyun Nunnery.

She...she actually set fire to Qingyun Nunnery!

The orange flames caught her eye, but Qi Su still wasn't satisfied.

She lifted her skirt and went to the Buddhist temple, knocking over all the lamp oil and candles offered before the Buddha.

Flames licked the curtains, and in the blink of an eye, a beam of light shot up more than ten feet high.

The gods and Buddhas, seated high on their altars, gazed down upon the mundane world with compassionate indifference amidst the firelight.

Qi Su stood outside the main hall, propping herself up with her hand as she looked on.

"The fire is burning, now it's warm."

Jinghe stood blankly outside the hall, as if her soul had wandered into the void.

Qi Su turned her head and saw her.

"Little Master, what are you still doing here?"

Jinghe let out a soft "Ah," her gaze filled with the firelight inside the Buddhist temple.

"What?"

Qi Su kindly reminded her, "Sister, you should go and call for help. Qingyun Nunnery is on fire, so be careful and make sure no one gets burned to death."

Qingyun Nunnery on fire? Jinghe instantly snapped out of her daze.

"Yes, yes, Qingyun Nunnery is on fire." She glanced at Qi Su with a complicated expression, then turned and ran away.

Not long after, the sound of a gong rang out in the night sky.

"Fire! Fire!"

.

What a huge fire!

Not only did they burn down the monks' quarters and guesthouses, but they even burned down the Buddhist temple.

No one knew how the fire started. The people of Qingyun Nunnery didn't have time to investigate; they were busy putting out the fire and rescuing people and belongings.

People are the most important thing.

The guests staying at the inn were all completely unharmed. There was just a lot of smoke over there, but not much open flame.

On the contrary, the fire in the nuns' quarters was quite frightening, as it was blazing.

Yuan Run, the abbot, went out to attend a Dharma assembly a few days ago and only returned yesterday.

Seeing the Qingyun Nunnery engulfed in flames, burning away all the hard work she had put in for most of her life.

My vision blurred, but I still clung to life.

"Hurry up and check if we have enough people."

Although the scene was chaotic, there weren't many people at Qingyun Temple to begin with.

There were not many patrons who stayed there.

After quickly counting the number of people, a young nun called out from the crowd, "Master, Uncle Yuanze hasn't come out yet!"

What? Yuan Run's vision went black again upon hearing this.

She is by nature gentle and not good at handling mundane matters.

Thanks to Yuanze for taking care of things at the nunnery, she was able to focus on her spiritual practice without any distractions.

"Quick, go check it out—"

Abbot Yuanrun led a group of nuns, young and old, carrying buckets of water, and rushed over to put out the fire.

However, they discovered that Yuanze's door was chained shut.

The people inside banged on the door, but couldn't get out.

Yuan Run, the host, didn't bother to figure out how the iron chain was attached and quickly went forward to untie it himself.

The door opened, and a person rushed out with a whoosh. Upon closer inspection, it wasn't Yuan Ze.

It was a man!

The man's head and face were covered in soot, as if he had crawled into the bottom of a pot, making it impossible to discern his original appearance.

And he was extremely fierce; he started cursing as soon as he came out.

"A bunch of bald old nuns, how dare they plot against your father!"

A coughing sound came from inside the room, and Yuan Ze climbed out as well, his white shirt covered in black ash.

The two were actually sharing a room.

He was caught red-handed in full view of everyone.

Yuan Run, the host, suddenly felt dizzy and completely fainted.

.

A fire broke out at Qingyun Nunnery, causing chaos and disorder that lasted until dawn without any peace.

As dawn broke, monks from Huatan Temple came to inquire about what had happened.

Qi Su sat by the fire.

A large cotton quilt wrapped her from head to toe. A half-open kettle was placed next to her.

Despite the surrounding noise and clamor, she remained serene and content.

She's so frail, even if the sky were to fall, she wouldn't have a chance to help.

When Jingrou came over, she was roasting sweet potatoes in the charcoal fire.

The sweet potatoes were roasted to perfection, charred on the outside and sweet and soft on the inside.

"Sister," she said, her mouth full of sweet potato, trying to squeeze out a few tears, but in this situation, she simply couldn't.

The sweet potato in my hand burned my hand.

Qi Su just blinked blankly and let out two dry howls.

"You have no idea, last night was truly terrifying."

Jingrou's gaze today was different from usual; it seemed both curious and cold as she scrutinized her from head to toe.

"Stop pretending. Didn't you start the fire?"

Qi Su held up a roasted sweet potato.

"Hiss, you can't, hiss, you can't wrong an innocent person!"

Jingrou remained expressionless.

"What injustice? My informants saw it all. You were the one who set fire to Qingyun Nunnery last night. And it was you who locked up Abbess Yuanze and that Master Zhao together."

Oh, I see.

Qi Su pondered for a moment.

"Even though you say that, I won't admit it without evidence."

He then ignored her and began peeling the roasted sweet potato himself.

But then the light dimmed, and Jingrou sat down next to her.

The little girl touched her chin into the fire.

Are there any sweet potatoes left?

Well, Qi Su felt a little uncomfortable. This younger sister had always disliked her and never bothered to hide her dislike; this was the first time they had been so close.

Qi Su scooped another sweet potato from the fire and gave it to her.

The two sat together and finished eating the roasted sweet potato.

Jingrou imitated Qi Su, propping up ten dark, dirty claws on her knees.

"You burned down Qingyun Nunnery, so you want to move into Huatan Temple?"

After all, the time allotted by her superiors was very tight. If she didn't work hard now, she wouldn't have many days left to live.

Qi Su puffed out her cheeks and blew the black ash off her paws.

Absent-mindedly: "Pretty much."

Jingrou nodded. She didn't scold her, and simply got up and left.

Qi Su tilted her head and looked at her for a moment.

My sister seems different now.

However, it doesn't matter.

The important thing is that from today onwards, she no longer needs to sneak up the mountain at night to meet with monks.
