Everything is predestined, and nothing is up to us.
Amitabha.
Wen Su originally wanted to escape the secular world with Zhao Chan, find a place where no one knew them, and spend the rest of their lives together, just the two of them, enjoying three meals a day and four seasons, a lifelong, devoted couple.
However, as she and Zhaochan were about to leave, she discovered that she had been poisoned. Her hands trembled as she looked at the handkerchief from which she had coughed up blood. She had only drunk the tea given to her by her grandfather. Could it be that her grandfather had poisoned her?
Wen Su looked at Zhao Chan, who was still packing his things in the courtyard. He longed for the days when the two of them would live together, but she could not leave with him.
Wen Su stood at the door, staring blankly at Zhao Chan. Suddenly, someone bumped into her and quickly left. Wen Su felt a note in her hand. She opened it and saw eight characters written on it: "Tonight at midnight, the Buddha Cave in the back mountain."
Wen Su's eyes darkened. Who was it? Who wanted to see her? There were too many mysteries. She couldn't drag Zhao Chan into this dangerous situation now.
"Susu, why are you standing at the door and not coming in?" Zhao Chan looked up and saw Wen Su standing at the door, seemingly lost in thought. He walked closer and asked.
Wen Su glanced at Zhao Chan and forced a smile, saying, "It's nothing, I'm just thinking about something."
Seeing that Wen Su seemed a little lost, Zhao Chan thought she was afraid that she wouldn't have a good life in the future. Zhao Chan comforted her, "Su Su, I know you used to live a life of luxury, but I will do my best to make your life even better in the future."
Looking at Zhao Chan's resolute face, Wen Su said softly, "I believe in you." In fact, she had always believed in Zhao Chan.
After the two parted, Wen Su returned to her room. When the moon was high in the sky, she put on her night clothes and left the temple, heading all the way to the Buddhist cave in the back mountain.
Upon entering the Buddhist cave, she looked up at the dense Buddhist scriptures and immediately recognized Zhao Chan's handwriting. With so many scriptures, he had spent his entire life in temples, accompanied by Buddhist scriptures and chanted Buddhist hymns. Was it really for his good to take him away from the temple and into the secular world?
For the first time, Wen Su began to doubt the decision she had made.
"I'm here, come out." Wen Su said as she walked in. She knew that person was hiding in the shadows, and she wanted to see who knew about her faked death.
"You've come." An aged voice rang out from the Buddha cave, and an old monk in a kasaya walked out. Upon closer inspection, it was none other than Xu Huai, Zhao Chan's master.
"Master Xuhuai?" Wen Su exclaimed in surprise. She hadn't expected that it was Master Xuhuai who had asked to meet her. "I wonder what brings Master Xuhuai to see Wen Su so late at night?" Wen Su asked warily.
“I understand that you cannot take Zhaochan away,” Xu Huai said bluntly.
"Why? I'm willing, and he's willing too. I don't know why Master Xuhuai is stopping us?" Wen Su asked directly.
“Because the two of you will not last long. You are his love tribulation, his calamity. I beg Benefactor Wen to spare Chan’er.” Xu Huai suddenly spoke, his whole body somewhat ferocious.
“Master Xu Huai, man can conquer nature. Just because you calculated that I am his calamity, you want to stop the two of us?” Wen Su retorted without any politeness.
"Then you shall stay here forever. That way, you can stay with him in the temple forever. In that case, you can be together forever, can't you?" Xu Huai said in a gloomy tone. This woman must die. He couldn't let her kill Zhao Chan.
Wen Su suddenly realized something and asked, "Did you poison me?"
"So what if it is? If you remain so stubborn, then go to hell." Xu Huai laughed maniacally.
"If Zhao Chan finds out, he won't forgive you." Wen Su felt the poison in her body slowly taking effect. Was she really going to die here?
"He won't know," Xu Huai said maliciously. After she was poisoned, he would throw her body off the cliff, where no one would ever find it.
“Monks are supposed to be compassionate, but I never imagined Master Xuhuai was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. What a waste of this monk’s good reputation. Go back and tell Zhaochan that I don’t want him anymore. What kind of good disciple can someone like you raise?” Wen Su said disappointedly. It was her fault for misjudging people; she had no one else to blame. She had to sever ties with Zhaochan as soon as possible, otherwise, that old bald monk might do something to Zhaochan.
“Once you leave, he will naturally be able to let go,” Xu Huai said dismissively. He absolutely could not let such a once-in-a-century genius be ruined.
Wen Su glanced at the cliff behind her. If she jumped, she would surely be smashed to pieces. If she didn't jump, Xu Huai would definitely not let her off the hook.
She cannot die; she still has revenge to take, and she still has Zhaochan, whom she promised to teach him what love is.
“Master Xuhuai, if you don’t want me to take Zhaochan away, then I won’t, okay? If you let me leave, I promise I will never see Zhaochan again.” Wen Su had no other choice but to use delaying tactics to appease Xuhuai first, and then find a way to see Zhaochan after she was freed.
“My dear niece, you can’t leave. If you leave, your uncle will be heartbroken.” From the shadows, Wen Lu slowly emerged, a smug smile on his face.
"You two actually colluded together?" Wen Su looked at the two people in front of her in disbelief.
"Don't put it so harshly. Master Xuhuai and I are cooperating to get rid of you together," Wen Lu said somewhat perversely, pointing a finger at Wen Su.
"Heh, I didn't expect that I'm so valuable, worth the trouble you two have gone to so much trouble for," Wen Su said with a self-deprecating smile, the blood at the corner of her mouth already dried, revealing a pale smile.
"Second Uncle, aren't you afraid of angering Grandpa if you kill me?" Wen Su asked calmly.
"Don't mention him to me. If you die quickly, you might still get to see him." A gloomy smile flashed across Wen Lu's face. That damned old man, half his body is about to be buried, yet he still clings to power. Since he can't bear to part with it, let him help him. It was the old man who sent him to Binzhou first. He had no choice. Blame the old man for going too far.
"You killed Grandpa? You beast!" Wen Su said angrily. She couldn't believe that her usually timid second uncle would dare to defy the world and kill her grandfather.
“Yes, from now on, I will be the only one who reigns supreme in the entire Wen family.” Wen Lu raised his hands, closed his eyes, as if many people were kneeling in front of him, and he enjoyed the pleasure that power brought him.
"Alright, enough said, Miss Wen, let's get going," Xu Huai said sinisterly.
“If Zhaochan knew the truth, he would hate you,” Wen Su hurriedly said.
“He will only be grateful to this old monk,” Xu Huai said loudly, his voice drowning out Wen Su’s, as if only in this way could he continue to deceive himself into believing that what he was doing was right.
Seeing that she couldn't dodge, Wen Su had no choice but to grip her sword tightly and meet the attack head-on. However, she was already poisoned and couldn't withstand Xu Huai's moves at all. In just two moves, Xu Huai slammed her against the cave wall, and she spat out a mouthful of black blood.
“My dear niece, don’t resist anymore. Why don’t you just die?” Wen Lu slowly walked up to Wen Su, grabbed her chin, lifted her face, and looked into her eyes mockingly.
Wen Su glared defiantly at Wen Lu, spat a mouthful of dirty blood in his face, and laughed loudly. Wen Lu, enraged, jumped up and slapped her. Just then, Wen Su seized the opportunity, picked up the sword beside her, and plunged it into Wen Lu's heart. Wen Lu stared in disbelief at the sword in his chest, and slowly closed his eyes.
"You wicked creature, how dare you kill someone!" Xu Huai roared when he saw Wen Su kill Wen Lu. He stepped forward, snatched Wen Su's sword, and forcefully stabbed it into Wen Su's body.
Wen Su suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood. She felt her life slowly slipping away. She looked up at the Buddhist scriptures that Zhao Chan had carved all over the cave. In a daze, she seemed to see Zhao Chan's figure carving the scriptures. Wen Su smiled at the Zhao Chan she had imagined and said, "I'm sorry, Zhao Chan, I have to break my promise."
Xu Huai looked at Wen Su, who was not yet completely dead. He picked up his sword and pierced Wen Su's heart. Wen Su had no strength to resist. She gently raised her hand, stroked the Buddhist scriptures on the cave wall, and closed her eyes completely. Until the moment she closed her eyes, the corners of her mouth were slightly smiling.
Looking at the completely dead Wen Su, Xu Huai breathed a long sigh of relief. Amitabha. Finally, Chan'er can stay at Hanshan Temple forever.
Just as Xu Huai was about to push Wen Su's body off the cliff, a bird's cry suddenly came from afar, followed by a huge creature flying in. If Wen Su were still alive, she would definitely recognize her Tianfu.
As Tianfu attacked him, Xu Huai angrily cursed, "Where did this beast come from?"
Tianfu pecked Xuhuai's shoulder hard, and the area instantly turned red with blood. Xuhuai had to exert a great deal of effort to barely cut off one of the beast's feet.
However, Xu Huai noticed that the beast was lingering around Wen Su. Xu Huai suddenly had an idea. He pretended to take out his sword to kill Wen Su. As expected, Tian Fu came over to stop him. Xu Huai seized the opportunity and stabbed Tian Fu into his body. Tian Fu let out a long cry and fell down next to Wen Su.
He smiled smugly, finally having dealt with this beast.
He looked at the bodies of Wen Su and Wen Lu, then pushed them off the cliff. He then threw Tian Fu off the cliff as well. From then on, no one else would know this secret.
After descending the mountain, Xu Huai sneaked into Zhao Chan's residence, placed his copy of Wen Su's letter in her room, and quietly left. Unexpectedly, Zhao Chan, who was too excited to sleep, saw his back.
Zhao Chan was puzzled. What was his master doing in his courtyard so late? Was it because he was leaving tomorrow and his master couldn't bear to part with him, so he came to see him in the evening?
Zhao Chan didn't dwell on it too much. After all, he and Wen Su would be starting a new life together tomorrow, and he would also bid farewell to his master tomorrow.
The next morning, Zhao Chan got up early and packed his things. He was so excited last night that he couldn't fall asleep until midnight. He couldn't sleep because he was so excited about the thought of being able to live happily ever after with Su Su.
"Susu, are you awake?" Zhao Chan knocked on Wen Su's door and asked. Strange, why is Susu still not awake? Could it be that she was too excited like him and went to bed late?
"Susu, Susu, get up quickly. I'll go get breakfast first, and we'll eat together later." Zhao Chan knocked on the door several more times, but there was still no response from inside the room. However, men and women are different, so he couldn't just go in rashly.
When Zhao Chan brought breakfast, he still couldn't find Wen Su. He couldn't care less about anything else. He was afraid that something had happened to Wen Su. With a bang, Zhao Chan pushed the door open and went in. He found that Wen Su was no longer in the room. The quilt on the bed was neatly folded, with no trace of anyone having slept in it.
Zhao Chan anxiously looked around, but still couldn't find Wen Su. All her things were here, so where could she have gone?
Just as Zhao Chan was searching in vain, he saw a piece of paper on the table. He quickly picked it up and read it quickly.
"Zhaochan, by the time you read this letter, I will have already left. I'm sorry, I broke my promise and chose to leave alone. Everything I did for you was for my own use; I never loved you. So, the moment you decided to leave with me, I regretted it. I'm so sorry, please forgive me. You've spent your whole life in the temple. I don't know if taking you away was a good thing or a bad thing. You were originally a high-ranking Buddhist disciple, a protector in the eyes of the people. Protecting the people was your duty. I shouldn't have been so selfish as to take you away, nor should I have kept the truth from you. I'm sorry, please forgive me for leaving without saying goodbye. I'm leaving. Don't come looking for me. Goodbye. I hope that when we meet again, you will still be that Buddhist disciple with the world in your heart."
Wen Su stayed.
Zhao Chan read the letter from beginning to end countless times. He couldn't believe that Wen Su had really abandoned him. They had clearly agreed that she would take him with her when they left.
Liar, liar, liar, she's lying to him.
She said she loved him just last night. It was all a sham, all a sham, hahaha, good, good, Wen Su, you're really something.
At first, Zhao Chan felt disbelief, then hatred, and finally helplessness. His mind was in turmoil. If he had looked closely, he would have found that the letter was somewhat incoherent and did not come from Wen Su's hand at all.
However, Zhaochan's psychological defenses had collapsed, and he had lost his mind, becoming somewhat insane.
Suddenly, the letter in Zhao Chan's hand spontaneously combusted. By the time Zhao Chan realized it, his fingers were already burning. But he still refused to let go, stubbornly holding onto the letter in his hand, trying to put out the fire. In the end, only a third of the letter remained, and Zhao Chan's hand was burned all over.
Wen Su, you liar, I will never forgive you. You want me to become a high and mighty Buddhist disciple, and you don't want me to come to you, but I will not let you have your way. I will go to find you until I find you.
Zhao Chan's eyes went from scarlet to somewhat sinister. He didn't believe it, and he was unwilling to accept it. He would rather die than let Wen Su fall into the same abyss with him. She should never think of getting rid of him.
Zhao Chan walked towards the main hall with the blood dripping from his hand. His body swayed slightly, but he still walked steadily towards the main hall step by step. Today was the day he returned to secular life, and it was also the first day that he could love Wen Su.
"Junior brother, you've arrived. Master is already waiting for you inside. Hey, junior brother, what happened to your hand?" Zhao Hua encountered Zhao Chan outside the hall. For some reason, he felt that something was wrong with Zhao Chan these days, so he asked with concern.
"Senior brother, I'm fine, let's go," Zhao Chan said hoarsely.
"But your hand is injured. How about I bandage it for you?" Zhao Hua tried to step forward and pull up his swollen and bleeding hand to take a look, but Zhao Chan dodged him.
Only pain can remind him of the pain he feels today; the pain in his fingers is nothing compared to even a fraction of the pain in his heart.
Xu Huai looked at the Buddha in the main hall. He thought that Zhao Chan would not come today, but he still appeared in the main hall today. Why did he still want to return to secular life? The girl was clearly gone!
Without saying a word, Zhao Chan walked to the central prayer mat, knelt down, and kowtowed three times to the Buddha before slowly turning to Xu Huai and saying, "Master, let's begin."
What is love in this world that makes people willing to die for it?
