Chapter 37: The Battle of a Trapped Beast

Chapter 37: The Battle of a Trapped Beast

The line of words on the phone screen was like a poisoned needle, piercing Su Yan's eyes.

Zhou is checking internal communication records, including the temporary terminals in the administration department. You're being targeted.

Cold sweat instantly soaked Su Yan's back. The temporary terminal in the administrative department—it was the same computer he had used the last time he risked his life to pass information to Su Chen! Assistant Zhou had indeed become suspicious, and he acted so quickly!

He felt like a flying insect entangled in layers of invisible spiderwebs. The more he struggled, the tighter the constraints grew. Huo Shen's control, Assistant Zhou's vigilance, the unknown dangers facing his brother... all the pressures converged into a suffocating torrent that threatened to overwhelm his sanity.

He shoved his phone back into his pocket, turned on the tap, and splashed ice-cold water on his face again and again, trying to suppress the panic in his heart. The boy reflected in the mirror was pale, his eyes filled with the fear of being forced into a desperate situation, and a hint of... gradually burning cruelty.

He couldn't just sit there and wait for death! Since Assistant Zhou had already started the investigation, it was only a matter of time before he found evidence. Once discovered, Huo Shen would never let him off. He had to do something, he had to turn the situation around before Assistant Zhou found solid evidence, or... shift the blame elsewhere.

His mind raced, recalling every detail. The audio in the USB drive mentioned Assistant Zhou's connection to Su Chen, CEO Zhao's untimely death, and Huo Shen's subtle scrutiny of Assistant Zhou... These fragments, pieced together, pointed to a possibility - Assistant Zhou wasn't absolutely loyal.

A plan, so bold it bordered on insanity, gradually took shape in his mind. He needed evidence, even the slightest clue, to prove Assistant Zhou's "infidelity." And where was the most likely place to find such evidence? Besides Assistant Zhou's own territory, the only place left was... Huo Shen's most private space.

His eyes involuntarily turned towards the master bedroom. Huo Shen was still ill and not in good spirits. This was a golden opportunity. Moreover, Huo Shen had just ordered him to "sleep here from now on", which provided him with a perfect reason to approach without arousing suspicion.

The risk is extremely high! If discovered, the consequences would be disastrous. But rather than waiting for Assistant Zhou to expose me, taking the initiative might give me a chance of survival!

After making up his mind, Su Yan surprisingly calmed down. He carefully wiped the water droplets off his face, adjusted his expression in front of the mirror, and turned back into the obedient boy with a little worry and fatigue.

When he returned to the master bedroom, Huo Shen seemed to have fallen asleep again, his breathing much more even. Su Yan tiptoed to the bedside, tucked in the quilt, and then casually began to survey the room. His gaze swept across the large closet, the closed bathroom door, and finally, landed on the built-in safe against the wall, which Huo Shen never allowed anyone to approach.

There, Huo Shen's deepest secrets are hidden, including Ah Xi's photos, and perhaps... there are other things too.

His heart was pounding in his chest, so loud he feared it would wake Huo Shen. He held his breath, as if walking on the edge of a knife, as he slowly approached the safe. Of course, he didn't have the combination or the key; he was simply observing, looking for any details he might have overlooked.

The safe was wiped clean, practically spotless. But in the gap where the bottom of the safe met the carpet, he seemed to see a small piece of... a very fine white fragment that was different from the dark carpet?

He squatted down and carefully picked up the crumbs with his fingers. The touch felt familiar, like... the slag of some dried medicine?

How could there be medicine residue here? The medicine Huo Shen took was all finished tablets or capsules prepared by his family doctor, not crumbs like this. Also, why would there be medicine in the safe?

An absurd yet startling hypothesis surfaced in his mind. Could it be that Huo Shen had been secretly taking some unknown medication? Was it to control his condition? Or was it… related to his mental state? Considering his occasional bouts of paranoia and loss of control, this speculation gave Su Yan a chill.

At this moment, there was a slight noise from the bed. Su Yan stood up suddenly as if he had been burned, tightly grasped the fragment in his palm, and quickly retreated to the chair beside the bed, pretending to have just sat down.

Huo Shen turned over but did not wake up.

Su Yan leaned back in his chair, the tiny crumb in his palm burning with warmth. This unexpected discovery was like a glimmer of light suddenly appearing in the darkness. Although it wasn't clear what it was, it was undoubtedly a hidden secret about Huo Shen. At some critical moment, it might be the key to saving his life.

Just then, very light, almost imperceptible footsteps were heard outside the bedroom door, stopping at the entrance. It seemed as if someone was pausing to listen. Was it Assistant Zhou? Was he suspicious enough to come directly to Huo Shen's door to investigate?

Su Yan's muscles tensed instantly, he held his breath, and stared at the door, as if he could see through the door and see the ghost-like figure outside.
