Chapter 69 The Eve of the Storm
Huo Shen's gaze was like two cold searchlights, falling on Su Yan's still flustered face. He approached step by step, his leather shoes making a dull sound on the carpet, and each step seemed to step on Su Yan's heart.
"You're back so early?" There was no emotion in Huo Shen's voice, but the invisible sense of oppression almost suffocated Su Yan.
Su Yan forced himself to look up and put on a gentle smile, but his heart was beating wildly in his chest: "Is the meeting...over?"
Huo Shen didn't answer his question. His sharp gaze swept across Su Yan's slightly messy hair and his slightly curled fingers placed on his knees, finally settling on the depths of his eyes, which were trying hard to maintain composure.
"You look," Huo Shen leaned over slightly, approaching him, his breath carrying the slightly cool air from outside, "a little nervous."
It's not a question, it's a statement.
Su Yan's heart skipped a beat, and he subconsciously wanted to deny it, but under Huo Shen's all-seeing gaze, he swallowed back all his excuses. He lowered his eyelashes and whispered, "No... I'm just a little surprised you came back early."
Huo Shen stared at him for a few seconds, then suddenly stood up and returned to his usual indifferent tone: "Well, the matter has been dealt with in advance."
He didn't ask any more questions and turned to walk towards the study, as if the brief scrutiny just now was just Su Yan's illusion.
But Su Yan knew it wasn't an illusion. Huo Shen must have noticed something. Was it his expression that wasn't natural? Or was it his aura that left a flaw? Or perhaps... the abnormality in Assistant Zhou's office door lock had been discovered?
A huge sense of unease washed over him like a tide. He felt like he was walking on an increasingly thin tightrope, with a bottomless abyss below and ferocious beasts on either side ready to devour anyone.
The next few hours felt like years to Su Yan. Huo Shen remained in his study, the apartment a dead silence. He didn't dare move around, only sitting stiffly on the living room sofa, his ears constantly alert for any unusual movement.
In the evening, Assistant Zhou arrived.
He remained calm and composed. After reporting to Huo Shen, he didn't leave immediately. Instead, he stood at the door of the study and said casually, "Boss Huo, the technical department reported this afternoon that the apartment's security system recorded a brief voltage fluctuation, triggering a local self-test. Preliminary diagnosis is that the socket panel in the living room is aging and short-circuited. We've arranged for someone to come and replace it tomorrow morning."
Su Yan's heart suddenly stopped beating! They really found it!
He lowered his head tightly, not daring to let Assistant Zhou see his face as he lost blood instantly.
Huo Shen's voice came from the study, and it was impossible to tell whether he was happy or angry: "I understand. Just handle this kind of trivial matter."
"Yes." Assistant Zhou replied, his eyes seemed to inadvertently sweep across the living room and lingered on Su Yan for a moment. His eyes were calm, but they made Su Yan feel a bit chilly.
After Assistant Zhou left, the study door closed again.
Su Yan collapsed on the sofa, his back cold. Assistant Zhou did it on purpose! He deliberately mentioned the abnormality of the security system in front of Huo Shen! What was he hinting at? Or was he conveying some kind of message to Huo Shen?
What would Huo Shen think? Would he connect this matter with himself?
At this moment, his phone vibrated—it was the old, almost forgotten phone he'd used for internal communications (Huo Shen had later allowed him to keep it for simple instructions). He trembled and clicked on it. It was a message from an unknown number, containing only four short words:
[The potted plant moved.]
Su Yan's pupils suddenly contracted!
The potted plant! The potted plant where he buried the USB player!
Someone touched it?! Who? Assistant Zhou? Or Huo Shen?!
Who sent this message? Was it a warning? Or was it... that mysterious girl reminding him?
The immense fear and the suffocating feeling of being strangled by an invisible hand made it almost impossible for him to breathe. He felt as if he was caught in a huge, slowly closing net, and he himself was the prey in the center with nowhere to escape.
He suddenly stood up from the sofa, rushed to the study door, and without caring about any rules, he raised his hand and knocked hard on the door.
He must know! He must know how much Huo Shen knows! This torment of waiting for trial is more terrifying than death!
"Sir! Sir!" His voice was filled with unprecedented panic and despair.
