Chapter 71: The Beast Still Fights

Chapter 71: The Beast Still Fights

Run away!

Those two words burned like a red-hot iron, searing Su Yan's retina and his heart. Escape? Where to? How?

He is now in a high-rise building with dozens of floors. Huo Shen's bodyguards are downstairs, and there are unknown dangers outside the door. Assistant Zhou is lurking in the dark like a ghost, and Huo Shen...his nominal "protector" has a mind as deep as the sea. He can give him some warmth one second, and push him into the abyss the next second.

He suddenly got up from the ground, his back against the cold wall, his heart pounding wildly in his chest, almost bursting out. He clutched the phone tightly, his fingertips turning white from the force.

Who was warning him? Was it the girl who delivered the cake? Why did she let him escape? Was Assistant Zhou about to take action? Or had Huo Shen changed his mind?

Countless speculations and fears entangled his nerves like venomous snakes. He felt like a mouse trapped in a dead end, surrounded by mousetraps on all sides, and the only exit might lead to an even more terrifying purgatory.

Don't panic! He forced himself to calm down. He had to think!

Assistant Zhou's "Phase Two" has already begun, and the target is likely Huo Shen, and possibly himself. Although Huo Shen has temporarily protected him, that protection is based on the premise of "being content" and "being useful." Once he loses his value or becomes a problem, Huo Shen will abandon him without hesitation.

The "escape" warning meant that danger was imminent, and even the mysterious man felt that he had to leave immediately.

What to do? What can he rely on?

Everything he knew flashed through his mind quickly: Huo Shen's secret medication, the mystery surrounding Ah Xi's death, Assistant Zhou's betrayal, the USB drive found buried under the potted plant, and... Huo Shen's complicated feelings for him, mixed with possessiveness and a hint of twisted dependence.

These are all chips, but how to turn these chips into a way to survive?

Should he directly expose Assistant Zhou to Huo Shen? With insufficient evidence, Assistant Zhou could easily deny it and even retaliate. Furthermore, he couldn't explain how he had learned the information about "Phase Two."

Taking advantage of Huo Shen's feelings? This is too illusory and too dangerous. Huo Shen's "feelings" are more like a paranoia about possessions, and cannot withstand any test.

It seemed that there was only one way left - he had to find conclusive evidence of Assistant Zhou's betrayal and hand it over to Huo Shen before Assistant Zhou took action, or... make it public. Only in this way could he muddy the waters and have a chance of survival in the cracks.

But where was the evidence? Where would Assistant Zhou, such a cautious person, put this crucial evidence? The company? The apartment? Or some secret location unknown to him?

Time is running out!

Su Yan took a deep breath, trying to calm his pounding heart. He couldn't just sit there and wait for death. He had to take the initiative, even if the hope was slim.

First, he needed a secure phone that could communicate with the outside world. His old phone was definitely being monitored. His eyes scanned the room, finally landing on an unassuming, dot-matrix-printed portable alarm clock on the bedside table. This was something Huo Shen had casually tossed to him long ago, asking him to keep track of his daily routine, and it had rarely been noticed.

This old-fashioned device might be able to...avoid surveillance?

He quickly walked over and removed the back cover of the alarm clock. The structure inside was simple. Relying on his memory and the superficial knowledge he had learned from secretly observing Huo Shen repairing things, he carefully tinkered with it, trying to transform it into a simple device that could send a specific signal. He didn't need to make a phone call, he just needed to be able to send a predetermined distress or warning signal to that mysterious number!

This was an extremely clumsy method with a pitifully low success rate, but he had no choice.

Just as he was concentrating and beads of sweat appeared on his forehead, the bedroom door was pushed open without warning.

The person standing at the door was not Huo Shen, nor a servant, but Assistant Zhou.

He was holding a tablet in his hand, with no expression on his face. His eyes behind the lenses fell coldly on the disassembled alarm clock in Su Yan's hand.
