Chapter 127 The Imprisoned Guards of the Prince's Mansion (24)

The next day, as the first rays of dawn fell on the treetops, a piercing knock on the door shattered the tranquility of the Regent's Palace.

The newcomer seemed to have little patience, pounding on the heavy door with tremendous force, as if he wanted to knock a hole through it before he would stop.

Before long, a shrill voice rang out from outside the door, "This humble servant is here on His Majesty's orders to deliver wedding gifts to the Regent."

"Open the door right now!"

His tone was unfriendly, showing no regard for the master of the Regent Palace.

The servant who heard the noise dared not move. Everyone in the manor knew that the emperor did not like their prince. Now, what kind of wedding gift was this? Who knew if there was a trick involved? Without thinking too much, he quickly turned around and found the steward.

At this time, it was still dark.

The steward hurried toward the gate of the mansion, wondering whether he should inform the prince, but then, considering the prince's temperament, he immediately felt it was unnecessary.

His prince doesn't seem like the type to get out of bed just because of a congratulatory gift from the emperor.

The moment the mansion gate was pulled open, a pungent smell of blood rushed out. The steward instinctively felt like vomiting, immediately held his breath, frowned, and looked towards the mansion gate.

An old man stood sideways in front of the door, giving him a disdainful glance:

"His Majesty said that since this is a good dog raised by the Regent, he naturally does not want to take away what the Prince likes. He specially instructed me to send it to the Prince to satisfy this servant's love for his master."

Eunuch Li spoke with a mocking tone, then glanced indifferently at the young eunuch who had been forced to approach him from behind:

"His Majesty also said that a servant is ultimately just a servant, no different from a guard dog. But if a servant can't distinguish who his true master is and even bites his own master, he must be taught a lesson."

"So His Majesty specially taught the Regent a lesson in manners. Although he was injured, His Majesty did this for the Prince's sake. I think if the Prince knew the truth, he would not resent His Majesty for it, right?"

The eunuch from last night was now completely unrecognizable. He couldn't make a sound, and his eyes were slightly closed, with the cloudy whites of his eyes faintly visible.

The two-finger-long gash on his shoulder, maliciously torn, pressed, and rubbed, was now red, swollen, and festering, emitting an indescribable, extremely foul stench of blood.

His face, with its bruised forehead, was even more unbearable to look at; it seemed as if flies were swarming around it.

Looking at his face, it was deathly pale, as if he were drenched in sweat and soaked in water. His body, hanging limply on the ground, stained the floor in front of the mansion red, making him appear lifeless.

At that moment, a group of servants escorting the young eunuch threw him to the ground, letting his body slam into the earth. Their eyes showed no remorse, and they did it as swiftly as if they had done it thousands of times before.

The steward's gaze followed Eunuch Li's words and fell on the little eunuch, but looking at that face, he had no memory of him at all.

How come he doesn't remember when such a person appeared in the Prince's mansion?

Everyone in the Prince's mansion was registered, including those lurking in the palace. Although he was over fifty, his memory was still exceptionally good.

If this person were truly from the Prince's mansion, he couldn't possibly have no recollection of him at all.

But Eunuch Li, who had brought the person, had no intention of explaining. He simply dropped the person off at the gate of the mansion and left with his entourage.

Even just by looking at him, the steward was quite certain that the person left at the gate was a dead man. After thinking for a moment, he called over a servant and had the person carried inside.

Even though the Prince's Mansion had almost no reputation left and no need to care about outside gossip, it was still impossible to let a dead person continue to rot and stink in front of the mansion gate.

…*…

In the new house, Yan Li groggily opened her eyes. After sensing the presence of another person beside her, she subconsciously reached under the pillow, intending to pull out the dagger and stab the person beside her.

However, the dagger that had been hidden under her pillow for years was not in this room. Lying beside her was her newlywed husband from the previous night, who was not the one who would take her life.

Her worries were unnecessary.

But in just a moment, she sat up, her face full of vigilance, until that familiar face came into view, and she slowly came back to her senses.

It was him.

Wen Shaoxing was propping himself up and staring at her, his eyes as still as water, where was the lustful gleam of the night before?

"What is Ali looking for?" He hadn't expected that he would witness such a scene simply because he had woken up a step earlier than her.

So, being by his side didn't make her feel at ease?

Or is it that she can't feel at ease just being by his side?

Yan Li didn't notice Wen Shaoxing's unusual behavior. He slowly withdrew his right hand from under the pillow and coughed lightly with a natural expression.

"It's nothing, I'm just not used to sleeping with someone yet."

She appeared calm on the surface, but inside she was extremely flustered and even felt completely lost.

She was just an assassin, not a confidante, and no one had taught her what to say or do in situations like this.

Yan Li, who couldn't think of a solution, not only had a headache but also a slight backache, especially after seeing Wen Shaoxing's face.

My tooth started to ache faintly.

Wen Shaoxing frowned slightly, pondered for a moment, and then said in a reassuring tone, "Ali can gradually get used to it in the future."

He was completely unaware of how terrifying his words sounded to Yan Li; he simply pulled her into his arms and gently stroked her head.

"I will always stay with Ali."

Even though he knew it was her keen sense as an assassin, it still left Wen Shaoxing with a lingering resentment that he couldn't exhale or swallow.
