The Regent's Palace.
All the servants of the manor were gathered together, and under the blazing firelight, it was declared: "From this day forward, you are no longer the servants of the Prince's manor. You are free to roam the world as you please."
The group knelt down, looking at each other, completely unprepared for this day.
"Your subordinate swears to follow you to the death, Your Highness."
Seeing this, the steward sighed, burned the death contract in his hand, and looked at Wen Shaoxing standing in front of the ancestral hall, "Why are you all making such a fuss? The prince is not without people by his side. You can all leave in peace."
Upon hearing this, they were stunned again, but every pair of eyes still longed to stay.
"Do you want the prince's plans to come to nothing?" The steward, already in his forties, looked at the group of young men and said, "You follow the prince, so this time, live for yourselves."
After dismissing everyone.
The butler and Liu Xing and the others stood behind Wen Shaoxing.
"Your Highness, is this really the way to go?" The steward looked at Wen Shaoxing, who was holding a torch and about to burn the ancestral hall and even the entire palace to ashes, and his eyes welled up with tears.
Wen Shaoxing gazed quietly at the only memorial tablet in the ancestral hall and replied, "Have they all left?"
The steward finally couldn't help but cover his face, "We're leaving, Your Highness. Don't worry, we won't let them ruin Your Highness's important business."
Upon hearing this, Wen Shaoxing nodded, then tossed the torch to the ground beside him. "Let's go."
Just two words, nothing more.
Outside the ancestral hall, Wen Shaoxing looked up at Yan Li sitting in the pavilion and couldn't help but chuckle. He had really underestimated his Ah Li.
On the pavilion, under the moonlight, Yan Li held the sword from that day in her arms. Seeing Wen Shao walk out, she slowly lowered her eyes.
"You've arranged everything for my funeral, even moved Old Huang, who used to guard the kitchen, to another place, but you haven't told me anything. If I don't come out, how long are you planning to keep this from me?"
For three whole days, Yan Li waited for Wen Shaoxing to confess, but Wen Shaoxing pretended to be blind even though he had caught him red-handed, just to keep the matter a secret.
“I originally wanted to give Ali a surprise,” Wen Shaoxing slowly walked over, looked up at Yan Li, “but I didn’t expect Ali to give me one too.”
Yan Li: "..." This is the first time I've ever heard of someone treating arranging a funeral as a surprise.
Why won't you say?
"Perhaps he wanted to know if Ali would be saddened by my death."
Neuropathy!
Yan Li gave an evaluation without hesitation.
...
Tonight, for some, it is a night of liberation, but for others, it is destined to be a sleepless night.
A fire reduced the Regent's Palace to ashes, extinguishing Wen Ziyu's last hope. He had just finished drafting the imperial edict when he heard the devastating news and hurriedly left the palace.
His gaze unconsciously fell on the direction he had looked in countless times, but what he saw with his naked eye was not the palace hidden in the night.
It was firelight, a light strong enough to engulf the entire palace. If that cripple were inside, he would surely have no chance of escape.
"How could he possibly be dead?" Wen Ziyu murmured.
How could someone like him possibly die?
"Go put out the fire, you bunch of idiots!"
Wen Ziyu, who had wanted Wen Shaoxing dead countless times, regretted his actions and even panicked when Wen Shaoxing was most likely to perish in the fire.
He didn't want the cripple to die.
Not now, and it can't be now.
It's certainly not in this way.
Fire is the most merciless thing, and the palace servants who were scolded for no reason felt even more aggrieved. Although the Regent's Palace was still in the city, it was still some distance from the palace.
By the time they get there to put out the fire, there probably won't even be any ashes left.
Wen Ziyu, having recovered his senses, suddenly sat down on the ground as if all his strength had left him, and burst out laughing.
He's really stupid.
This must have been a trick used by that cripple to escape, and he actually believed it and almost fell for it.
Wen Ziyu summoned the imperial guards to strictly guard all the exits from the city, and he felt as if he had found a pillar of support again.
Yes, that cripple has always been lucky. He's tried to assassinate so many times and he's never died. This time it must be a trap he deliberately set to escape. No way.
Wen Ziyu sat on the ground, completely unaware of the imperial edict bestowing the title of general, which was abandoned to the side. No one dared to pick it up, nor did anyone dare to look at what was written on it.
After an unknown amount of time, the fire finally went out.
Looking at that dark corner, Wen Ziyu couldn't help but sigh inwardly at how clever that cripple was; he was even willing to completely abandon his royal identity in order to escape.
The sky gradually brightened.
Without any further hesitation, he walked out of the palace gate and rushed to the Regent's Palace, looking at the prison that he had personally chosen for him.
Wen Ziyu did not believe that Wen Shaoxing would perish in the fire, so until the moment he stepped into the Regent's Palace, he was convinced that he was still alive.
However, in the empty palace, the steward and his four henchmen were kneeling in front of a charred corpse, their eyes red-rimmed.
But the corpse was as black as charcoal, nothing like that cripple. They were treating everyone in the world like fools!
…*…
Wen Ziyu believed he wasn't a fool and even firmly believed he could find the truth so that the world could see Wen Shaoxing's true colors.
After returning to the palace from the Regent's Palace, he no longer dwelled on the border issues. Instead, he spent a great deal of manpower and resources searching for a dead man mentioned by others, or a former meritorious official.
The result was always the same: the cripple died in the fire, with no chance of survival.
