Chapter 188 Evil Spirits (18)

"Lord Wen, may I ask what crime my daughter has committed to warrant imprisonment?"

At the entrance of the government office, Yan Menghuai's parents were already standing in front of the gate.

The two men who had been pleading with the guards at the gate to make an exception turned around and looked at Wen Hao, who had come alone, questioning him, but they didn't even dare to address him as "nephew" casually.

Although Yan's father couldn't stand Yan Menghuai dressing herself up like a dead person all the time, no matter what, that person was still his daughter, his bloodline, and he couldn't let her torture him at will.

Wen Hao frowned slightly, but he wasn't surprised that the two of them were here.

"She should have thought of this day when she poisoned my wife." Wen Hao's voice was as gentle as ever, without much excessive emotion.

The two were both surprised when they received the answer.

"lady?"

How come they didn't know that Wen Hao had remarried?

"Is there some misunderstanding?" Mother Yan couldn't help but take a step forward, her face filled with panic. "How could she possibly do something that would lead to someone's death?"

Even Yan's mother was shocked by Wen Hao's words.

"I wonder who Lord Wen's wife is now, and whether she is well. If she is, why don't you come forward and tell us the whole story? Then we can find out if my daughter poisoned her." Standing to the side, Yan's father recovered his senses, pulled Yan's mother behind him, and bowed respectfully to Wen Hao.

He no longer cares when Wen Hao will remarry.

This matter concerns his daughter's life and fortune. Even though he often makes harsh statements at home, saying he would sever ties if things got too serious, he still couldn't bear to see her lose her life when this actually happened.

Upon hearing this, Madam Yan nodded repeatedly, "Yes, yes, we've watched Huai'er grow up since she was a child. How could she possibly poison someone? There must be some misunderstanding."

"Lord Wen, you must not let the real culprit go unpunished because of the past."

Wen Hao naturally knew what the past events that Yan's mother was referring to were.

"Whether it's a misunderstanding or not, you'll know after the court hearing." Wen Hao's decision to bring Yan Li out today was certainly not a spur-of-the-moment thing.

It was because he found evidence that proved Yan Menghuai had drugged Yan Li back then.

It's still irrefutable evidence.

When the two elders heard Wen Hao's resolute words, they exchanged a glance and saw a hint of surprise in each other's eyes. They even couldn't help but wonder if their daughter had really become a murderer.

Yan Li, who was standing beside him, was also taken aback when she heard this.

A court hearing? Has evidence actually been found?

That was quite unexpected.

She thought the truth from three years ago would be buried by time and never be unearthed again.

***

Below the hall, Yan Menghuai was brought over, and kneeling beside her was a young doctor dressed in gray cloth.

The servant looked flustered and dared not raise his head, his fingers twisted in a knot. Yan Menghuai, on the other hand, seemed extremely calm and did not appear to be worried about being punished.

"Sir, everything I've said is true. That Miss Yan did indeed come to my clinic to get arsenic back then, saying there were too many mosquitoes, rats, and snakes in the summer, and she wanted to sprinkle it around her house for protection." The clinic servant spoke haltingly, his voice trembling slightly.

"I truly had no idea she intended to use this to harm Lord Wen's wife."

It's been three years since that incident.

He thought he had escaped a calamity, but one day the government officials suddenly came knocking on his door and even uncovered the events of that year.

But who could have imagined that this Miss Yan would hate Miss Yan to the point of wanting her dead, and even commit such a crime on their wedding night?

Given Wen Hao's appearance back then, if he had actually revealed the source of the poison, even if he had survived, he might have been sent to the underworld in his impulsiveness.

The two elders, who had not known who Wen Hao's new wife was, suddenly realized at this moment and looked at Wen Hao sitting on one side of the hall with nothing but shock in their eyes.

They could never have imagined that the case from three years ago would one day be related to their daughter.

The "wife" he mentioned was a deceased person, their niece, Yan Li.

Upon hearing the doctor's words, Yan Menghuai was startled and almost instantly looked at Wen Hao, exclaiming, "It wasn't me!"

Without any hesitation, Yan Menghuai distanced herself from the matter, repeating once again: "I didn't poison her, I didn't poison Yan Li!"

How could she have imagined that Wen Hao would bring up old grievances today?

She could even find the young doctor who sold her the medicine.

"Now that things have come to this, are you still going to hide it?" The gavel rang out in the courtroom. "Yan Menghuai, why don't you just tell the truth? Do you want me to torture you before you'll talk?"

"No, don't..." Yan Menghuai, seeing that she was about to be beaten, even though she could still keep her composure, had already shown a look of panic on her face. "I did buy arsenic from his clinic three years ago, but I really did not poison him."

"Your Honor, she is my cousin, how could I possibly harm her?"

As she spoke, she crawled forward, pulling away the hand that was trying to grab her. Her voice was tinged with tears, clearly showing that she was genuinely frightened by the scene.

But the group of constables standing on both sides had already surrounded her and even grabbed her hands.

They would drag the person out and beat them up at the mere command of the person in the hall.

"Wen Hao," Yan Li, who was leaning on Wen Hao's shoulder, chuckled softly in his ear, "Is this what you wanted me to see...?"

Wen Hao tightened his grip on Yan Li's hand, interrupting her from continuing to speak, and then looked at the courtroom, "Wait a minute, who gave you permission to use torture? Is this how you usually interrogate cases?"
