Chapter 17 A Blessing in Disguise

A huge gray wolf, with a fierce light in its eyes, bypassed the fighting crowd and pounced on a hunter named Lai Zi.

In Lai Zi's panic, the hatchet in his hand slipped out of his hand and he was about to die in the wolf's mouth.

"Laizi, be careful!"

Chen Changyuan shouted, and at the critical moment, he raised his hunting rifle, aimed at the gray wolf's head, and with a "bang", the bullet hit the target accurately.

The gray wolf's huge body fell to the ground with a loud bang, splashing up a cloud of dust.

Lai Zi collapsed on the ground in shock, gasping for breath, "Changyuan, thank...thank you!"

Just as Chen Changyuan was about to respond, his feet suddenly felt empty and he fell downwards.

It turned out that he was standing on the edge of a ravine, and the soil became loose after being hit by the gray wolf's corpse, causing him to slip and fall.

"Changyuan!" the hunters exclaimed and ran to the edge of the ditch to look down.

The ravine was not too deep, but the bottom was full of rocks. Chen Changyuan fell heavily on the rocks, and a sharp pain came over him, making him groan.

"Changyuan, how are you?" Lao Yuantou shouted anxiously.

Chen Changyuan struggled to sit up and checked his body. Fortunately, he had only some superficial injuries and no injuries to his bones.

He looked up and saw the hunters looking down anxiously. He waved his hand to indicate that he was fine.

"I'm fine, I just can't go up!" Chen Changyuan shouted helplessly.

The hunters looked at each other in confusion. The ravine was steep, easy to go down but difficult to come up.

"I'll go find a rope!" said a hunter, turning and running towards the forest.

Chen Changyuan sat bored at the bottom of the ditch, waiting for rescue.

He was casually fiddling with the weeds around him, when suddenly his eyes were caught by a plant.

The plant has palm-shaped leaves and a thick stem with a cluster of red fruits at the top.

"Is this... wild ginseng?"

Chen Changyuan was shocked. He had seen pictures of wild ginseng in medical books, and they were very similar to the plant in front of him.

He carefully pulled up the plant by the roots and observed it carefully. He found that the rhizome was thick and human-shaped, with slender fibrous roots. It was indeed a wild ginseng, and of excellent quality.

Chen Changyuan was ecstatic. This wild ginseng was a rare treasure that could not be found easily. He did not expect that he would find it under such circumstances.

He secretly hid the ginseng in his arms, but his face remained expressionless.

At this time, the hunters came back with the rope. They let down the rope and worked together to pull Chen Changyuan up.

"Changyuan, are you okay?" Lao Yuantou asked with concern.

Chen Changyuan smiled and shook his head. "It's okay, I just fell a little, it's nothing serious."

After returning to the cave, the hunters counted the number of people and found that except for a few who were slightly injured, everyone else was safe and sound.

"Thanks to Changyuan this time. If it weren't for him, we would probably all die here." Lai Zi said gratefully.

Other hunters also echoed and expressed their gratitude to Chen Changyuan.

Lao Yuantou patted Chen Changyuan on the shoulder and said, "Changyuan, you are really great!"

Chen Changyuan smiled and said nothing, but he was thinking about how to deal with this precious ginseng.

The hunters dragged the wolf's carcass back to the cave in high spirits.

The fire crackled, illuminating their excited faces.

"Come on, let's count our spoils!" Old Yuantou rubbed his hands and said impatiently.

Several hunters hurriedly piled the wolf carcasses together and counted them carefully. There were a total of six huge gray wolves.

"Six! This is a great harvest!" a hunter shouted excitedly.

"Yes, now we can have a prosperous year!" another hunter echoed.

The old man looked around at everyone, and finally his eyes fell on Chen Changyuan:

"Changyuan, this time we're all in this together thanks to you. If it weren't for you, I'm afraid all of us old bones would have died here. You take three of these six wolves, and the remaining three will be divided equally among the four of us. How about that?"

Chen Changyuan waved his hands quickly:

"How can this be? How can I take so much by myself? We all contributed together, so we should share it equally."

"Changyuan, don't be polite."

Lai Zi said sarcastically, "If you hadn't acted like a hero, we wouldn't have lost so many hunting dogs."

Chen Changyuan frowned, ignored Lai Zi, turned to Lao Yuantou and said:

"Uncle Yuan, let's split it in half. I can't use so much by myself."

The old man glared at Lai Zi and said:

"Laizi, stop talking nonsense! If it weren't for Changyuan, you would have been taken away by the wolf long ago! And you're still whining here!"

Lai Zi shrank his neck and dared not speak anymore, but a trace of resentment flashed in his eyes.

"It's a long-term thing, so don't refuse."

Lao Yuantou patted Chen Changyuan on the shoulder and said, "You contributed the most this time, so you deserve a bigger share. Besides, you saved Lai Zi's life, so these three wolves are his thank you gift."

Seeing that Lao Yuantou was determined, Chen Changyuan could not refuse any longer and nodded in agreement.

The weight of the six wolves made everyone breathless, and the way down the mountain became extremely long.

Lai Zi walked at the end, and from time to time he would steal a glance at Chen Changyuan who was walking in front, with a hint of viciousness flashing in his eyes.

He rubbed his aching shoulder and cursed in his heart:

"Damn you, you stole my limelight and caused me to lose my hunting dog. I'm going to settle this score with you sooner or later!"

After returning to the village, the hunters piled the wolf carcasses in the spacious yard of Lao Yuantou's house.

The strong smell of blood filled the air, attracting many villagers to watch.

The old man asked everyone to carry the wolf corpse into the yard, and then said to Chen Changyuan:

"Changyuan, stay here. I'll teach you how to skin a wolf."

Chen Changyuan nodded. He knew that skinning a wolf was a technical job. If it was not handled properly, the fur would easily be damaged and its value would be reduced.

Lao Yuantou picked up a sharp skinning knife, skillfully cut an incision in the wolf's abdomen, and then peeled off the fur from the wolf bit by bit.

He demonstrated and explained the techniques:

"When peeling the skin, you must pay attention to the strength. Not too hard, not too light. Peel along the direction of the hair to ensure the integrity of the fur."

Chen Changyuan watched attentively, taking note of every step carefully.

Lao Yuantou's technique is skillful and precise, as if he is performing an artistic performance.

"Do you understand?" asked the old man.

Chen Changyuan nodded, "I roughly understand."

"Come, try it." Lao Yuantou handed the skinning knife to Chen Changyuan.

Chen Changyuan took the knife, took a deep breath, and imitated Lao Yuantou, cutting a slit in the belly of another wolf. The blade scraped across the wolf's skin, making a slight friction sound.

He carefully peeled the fur off the wolf. His movements were a little clumsy, but steady.

Lao Yuantou was guiding him from the side, correcting Chen Changyuan's mistakes from time to time.

"Hands should be steady, don't shake."

"The force should be even, not fluctuating."

“Pay attention to the direction of the hair and don’t peel against it.”
