Chapter 2 A good start

“Gurgle…”

His stomach growled at an inopportune time, and Chen Changyuan smiled bitterly. It seemed that he had to fill his stomach first before he would have the strength to work.

"Mom, is there anything to eat at home?" Chen Changyuan rubbed his stomach and looked at Fang Suxia who was looking worried.

Fang Suxia lowered her head anxiously, "There's just... there's just a little cornmeal left, I can make some porridge..."

She carefully raised her eyes to look at Chen Changyuan, then quickly lowered her eyes and asked in a low voice, "Is it...is it that you are not used to drinking it?"

Fang Suxia wondered how this child could adapt to the hard life of eating coarse grains when he is used to eating refined grains.

On the one hand, he wanted to borrow some fine grain coupons to exchange for some food for Chen Changyuan.

"Changyuan, are you not used to the food? Just wait, I'll go..."

"What's so strange about this? Mom, wait a minute, I'll go cook."

Chen Changyuan spoke in a relaxed tone, as if corn porridge was some kind of delicacy.

Fang Suxia looked at Chen Changyuan's busy figure and was a little confused.

This child, why does he seem like a different person?

I have never cooked before, but now I actually offer to cook.

Maybe he was upset by something. Thinking of this, I felt uneasy again.

On the other side, Chen Changyuan scooped cornmeal into the pot, added water and stirred it into a paste, then put it on the stove to cook.

The flames in the stove were weak and the smoke was so thick that it made him cough. He fanned the fire vigorously and the flames gradually grew stronger.

While the porridge was cooking, he walked to the yard and looked around. The yard was small, overgrown with weeds, and some broken farm tools were piled in the corner.

In the distance, there are continuous green mountains and a small river winding through. The scenery is quite nice.

Chen Changyuan thought to himself that there must be a lot of wild game in the mountains, and there should be fish and shrimp in the river.

As long as you put in the effort, you will definitely be able to get food.

Chen Changyuan's eyes swept around the kitchen, his mind racing.

hunt?

The wild animals in these deep mountains and old forests are very smart. If you go in empty-handed, you may not encounter one. Even if you encounter one, you may not be able to catch it with your bare hands.

Making a bear trap? It's possible, but it takes time to make, and the materials are hard to find.

Touching his rumbling stomach, Chen Changyuan's eyes fell on the fish basket in the corner. Got it! Fishing!

Chen Changyuan got to work right away. He rummaged through boxes and drawers and found a rusty sickle. He also cut some flexible thorn branches and a few strong grass stems from the yard.

He rolled up his trouser legs, revealing his lean calves, and squatted on the ground. His fingers nimbly weaved a fish basket, his technique as skillful as that of an old fisherman.

In my previous life, I was in the army, and the field survival training was not in vain. These are all trivial matters.

The aroma of cornmeal gradually spread. Fang Suxia stood silently at the kitchen door, watching her son busying around, feeling mixed emotions.

I heard this child has been smart since childhood, but his life is miserable...

"In the long run, it's better to be confused."

Fang Suxia called out cautiously, fearing to disturb her son.

Chen Changyuan looked up and grinned, revealing his white teeth. "Okay, Mom!"

Chen Changyuan took the coarse porcelain bowl and filled it with a bowl of hot, fragrant paste. He used a spoon to scoop more than half of the paste into another bowl and handed it to Fang Suxia, "Mom, you eat first."

Fang Suxia looked at the bowl handed to her, was stunned for a moment, and quickly waved her hand, "Mom is not hungry, you eat, you eat."

"Mom, please don't be polite with me. I'm young and strong, so it's okay to skip a meal. But you're not in good health, so you have to eat your fill." Chen Changyuan stuffed the bowl into Fang Suxia's hands without saying anything, "Eat it while it's hot."

Fang Suxia wanted to refuse, but Chen Changyuan smiled and said, "Mom, if you don't want to eat, your son won't eat either."

Looking at her son's determined eyes, Fang Suxia felt warm in her heart and her eyes became moist. She took the bowl, blew on it gently, scooped up a spoonful of the paste, and slowly put it into her mouth.

At this moment, the rough corn paste seemed to have become the most delicious food in the world.

"Mom, I went out fishing."

I swallowed the corn porridge whole.

Chen Changyuan picked up the prepared fish basket and a sharpened wooden stick, turned around and walked out the door.

Fang Suxia looked at the half of porridge left in the bowl and her eyes turned red again.

Fang Suxia wanted to say something, but swallowed it back.

My son has grown up, become more sensible, and has more ideas.

Maybe it would be nice to go out and relax.

She stood at the door, looking at Chen Changyuan's back until he disappeared from her sight. Then she slowly withdrew her gaze, picked up the bowl, and ate the remaining porridge mouthful by mouthful, as if it was the most delicious delicacy in the world.

The river in Qingshui Village is at the west end of the village, not far from Zhou's house.

Changyuan walked along the winding path towards the river.

The closer we got to the river, the clearer the sound of gongs and drums from the Zhou family's wedding reception became. The suona sounded deafening, firecrackers rang out, and the scene was extremely lively.

In his previous life, when Chen Changyuan heard this voice, he felt as if his heart was being pricked by needles, making it hard for him to breathe.

In this life, when he heard this voice, he felt unusually calm, even with a hint of sarcasm.

Zhou family, haha, from now on, I, Chen Changyuan, will have nothing to do with you anymore!

Walking to the river, Chen Changyuan chose a place with slow water flow, put down the fish basket, and began to set the trap.

He stuck a sharpened wooden stick into the riverbed to secure the fish basket, and then scattered some bait mixed with wild vegetables and grass seeds around the fish basket.

After doing all this, he found a clean stone to sit on and waited quietly for the fish to take the bait.

The river water is so clear that you can see the bottom. The sunlight shines through the water and illuminates the pebbles at the bottom of the river, making the waves sparkle.
