The old man nodded solemnly and said calmly:
"Sister Cuihua, we are serious this time. This kid... well, let's not talk about it. Anyway, this matter is very serious, and I have to ask your master for help."
Cuihua's gaze fell on Chen Changyuan, with a hint of scrutiny, and a hint of imperceptible appreciation.
She grinned, revealing her white teeth, a stark contrast to her rugged appearance:
"Old Yuan, you have good taste. This guy looks pretty strong. I heard he once killed a bear with his bare hands. That's impressive!"
Chen Changyuan was a little embarrassed by this sudden compliment and scratched his head:
"It was just luck. The bear was injured at the time..."
"Luck is also a part of strength!"
Cuihua interrupted him heroically.
"Don't worry, since you call me sister, I'll help you! Although my master is not here, my craftsmanship is not bad. I promise to make you a handy weapon!"
Chen Changyuan was overjoyed and thanked him quickly:
"Thank you so much, Sister Cuihua!"
Cuihua waved her hand cheerfully:
"Why thank you? We're all family! But this thing requires some special materials and tools. It'll take at least three days."
"Three days is no problem!"
Lao Yuantou quickly responded, "We'll come back in three days!"
Coming out of the dark alley, Chen Changyuan squinted his eyes, adapting to the sudden sunlight.
He was still thinking about Cuihua's hearty laughter and strong figure, and couldn't help asking Lao Yuantou:
"Uncle, who exactly is this Cuihua sister's master?"
The old man lowered his voice in a mysterious manner:
"This man was a remarkable figure during the Anti-Japanese War! Back then, he could do anything, climb walls and fly over rooftops. He was omnipotent! Even the Japanese were afraid of him!"
He paused and added.
"The craftsmanship of making hunting rifles is even more exquisite. With a gun in his hands, he can really hit the target wherever he points it!"
Chen Changyuan was stunned and couldn't help asking:
"Then how is he now..."
The old man waved his hand and interrupted him:
"Don't ask questions you shouldn't ask. Knowing too much won't do you any good!"
After saying that, he quickened his pace, leaving Chen Changyuan with a mysterious back.
Chen Changyuan didn't ask any more questions. He knew Lao Yuantou's temper. Since he didn't want to say anything, he must have his reasons.
The two went to the supply and marketing cooperative and bought some refined rice and flour, which were rare commodities in the 1970s.
Chen Changyuan weighed the heavy bag of rice in his hand and thought to himself that once he got the hunting rifle, he would definitely hunt some bigger prey to improve the family's food.
Returning to the village entrance, Chen Changyuan took out a thick stack of money from his pocket and stuffed it into the hands of the old Yuantou:
"Uncle, take this money."
The old man was startled and quickly pushed the money back:
"What are you doing? You hunted all the prey yourself, so why am I taking the money?"
"Uncle, if you hadn't taught me these skills, how could I have sold them for so much money?"
Chen Changyuan insisted, "Just take it, don't be polite with me!"
The old man's face darkened:
"Changyuan, are you looking down on me? Do you think I'm short of money? I won't accept this money no matter what!"
Seeing that the old man was determined, Chen Changyuan had no choice but to give in:
"Well, uncle, you can take whatever you want as your hard work fee."
He pulled out a small stack of about three hundred yuan and handed it over again.
Old Yuan grabbed the money, counted out fifty yuan, and stuffed the rest back into Chen Changyuan's hands:
"I'll only take fifty, no more! If you dare to give me more next time, don't blame me for getting angry with you!" After saying that, he turned around and left with a stern face.
Chen Changyuan looked at Lao Yuantou's receding back and smiled helplessly.
This old man has a really stubborn temper.
Carrying the refined rice and flour back to the doorstep, Chen Changyuan heard a buzzing sound in the house before he even entered, like a swarm of flies flying around his ears.
His heart skipped a beat, and he thought, could it be that Zhou Dazhu's grandson has brought his men to cause trouble again?
Ever since he beat Zhou Dazhui to a pulp last time, that guy has been holding a grudge against him and threatened to teach him a lesson.
He pushed open the gate and strode into the house, but found that the situation in the house was not as tense as he had imagined.
Instead, there were seven or eight young men around twenty years old sitting around, staring at him eagerly, like a group of hungry wolves seeing a piece of fat meat.
"Mom, what's going on?"
Chen Changyuan put the rice and flour on the table and asked Fang Suxia who came towards him in a low voice.
Fang Suxia took the things and said in a low voice:
"They're all here to see you."
These young men stared at the fine rice and flour in Chen Changyuan's hand, their saliva almost dripping.
Chen Changyuan felt uncomfortable being stared at and asked Fang Suxia in a low voice:
"Mom, what's going on? Why are they all here?"
Fang Suxia took the rice and noodles and said in a low voice, "Ask them yourself."
"Looking for me?"
Chen Changyuan was stunned, then looked around at the seven or eight young men in the room, two of whom were the ones who helped him carry the wild boar last time.
He pointed at the group of people and asked in confusion, "What do you want from me?"
A young man named Jiang Yuanchao grinned, revealing a mouthful of white teeth:
"Brother Changyuan, we want to go hunting with you!"
As soon as he finished speaking, others echoed:
"Yes, yes, Brother Changyuan, please take us with you!"
"We are so envious of you for bringing back so many preys every day!"
