Chapter 4: Black Market, Buying Medicine

Before Chen Changyuan reached the door of his house, he saw a thin figure standing in the yard. It was his mother Fang Suxia.

She hunched her shoulders, put her hands on her forehead to block the light of the setting sun, and looked towards the village entrance.

Fang Suxia's eyes swept back and forth along the path, as if she could bring her son back just by looking a few more times.

Seeing this scene, Chen Changyuan felt a pang in his heart, but he couldn't help but raise the corners of his mouth.

He quickened his pace and strode closer with the fish basket in hand.

"Mom, I'm back!"

Chen Changyuan stood at the gate of the yard and shouted with a smile.

Fang Suxia saw him at once and was obviously relieved. The worry on her face disappeared in an instant.

She came over, patted Chen Changyuan's arm, and said, "It's good that you're back, it's good that you're back."

Her eyes only swept over the fish basket in Chen Changyuan's hand. She didn't even look carefully at the size of the fish or how many there were in it. She just held his hand and looked it up and down, fearing that her son had bumped into something.

"Mom, it's okay. I went out to catch fish! Look, what's in this basket?"

Chen Changyuan shook the fish basket with an expression as if he was seeking credit.

Fang Suxia didn't care much. She just patted her chest and said, "It's you! I'm not worried about anything else, I'm just worried that you might do something dangerous."

"You're still trying to coax me! It's just a fish. Your safe return is better than anything else!"

"Mom, we're having fish tonight! Just sit and wait, I'll take care of it!"

As Chen Changyuan said this, he was about to walk to the back of the kitchen with the basket.

"Hey, wait!"

Fang Suxia quickly stopped him, "Don't kill them all yet, leave two for you to eat tomorrow. Some porridge is enough for Mom—"

When Chen Changyuan heard this, his face immediately darkened.

"Mom, if you eat porridge, then all my work will be in vain. I worked so hard to give us a treat!"

"Oh, Mom is really not hungry!"

Fang Suxia's tone was somewhat flattering. Seeing her son's unfriendly expression, she quickly added, "Mom will eat! Mom will eat, okay?"

Having said that, she then reached out for the fish, intending to handle it herself.

Seeing this, Chen Changyuan couldn't bear to let his mother work hard, so he quickly snatched the fish back and said with a smile: "Mom, you sit down and rest for a while, I'll do it!"

After saying that, he turned and went into the yard, skillfully set up a small wooden stool, and poured out the fish one by one.

The memories of his past life allowed him to handle these fish smoothly.

Scrape the scales, gut the fish, remove the internal organs, and wash it, every step is done neatly and quickly, and in a few seconds, the whole fish plate is filled with shiny fish meat.

Fang Suxia stood nearby, her jaw dropping, and couldn't help but mutter, "Could Changyuan even do this?"

Then he added, "Don't worry too much, don't tire yourself out. After you've caught the fish, wash your hands first and drink some hot water. You've been running all afternoon, don't catch a cold."

When the words came to his lips, his concern was evident.

Chen Changyuan responded but did not slow down.

He knew in his heart that his mother kept nagging because she loved him, but at the same time she was also hiding her reluctance to let him go.

How difficult is it to have this fresh fish meal at home?

How could he believe what his mother said about "eating enough porridge"?

Cornmeal porridge has only a few calories, it's not very filling and has little oil.

After the fish was processed, Chen Changyuan lit a low fire, threw the fish meat in and fried it to create a layer of golden crispy skin, then turned it over and simmered it.

Not long after, an enchanting fragrance wafted out.

"Mom, sit down!"

Chen Changyuan brought the steaming fish soup and pushed his mother to the table.

He scooped two large bowls of fish soup from the pot and placed two whole fish in front of the mother and son.

His voice was full of arrogance. "Mom, I never eat second meals. If I can't finish this fish today, I'll just throw it away."

Fang Suxia was stunned when she heard this.

She didn't expect that her son would just scoop up the whole fish and be so overbearing.

How could she not know that her son said this on purpose, fearing that she would not eat it!

But when she looked at the delicious fish in the bowl and then at her son's determined expression, her nose felt sore and tears almost fell.

"Eat quickly, Mom. If you don't move your chopsticks, I'll be angry."

Chen Changyuan pretended to be impatient.

"Okay, Mom, eat, Mom, eat!"

Fang Suxia raised her hand to wipe the corner of her eyes, picked up the chopsticks, picked up a piece of fish and put it into her mouth.

In an instant, the delicious taste that she had not tasted for a long time exploded in her mouth, and she was a little dazed.

She ate slowly and chewed carefully, as if she was afraid that she would miss the flavor of every bite.

Chen Changyuan didn't urge her, but just accompanied her quietly, occasionally eating a few bites. Most of the time, he looked at his mother's satisfied expression, and a warm feeling surged in his heart.

"Mom," Chen Changyuan said seriously after Fang Suxia put down her chopsticks, "I will lead you to a good life in the future."

Fang Suxia was stunned for a moment, and her eyes became moist again.

"What nonsense are you talking about, kid? We're lucky enough to have enough food and warm clothes..."

Chen Changyuan interrupted her, "So, you have to take good care of yourself! If your body collapses, who will enjoy your good days in the future?"

Fang Suxia burst into laughter and said, "You are so poor! Mom knows."

Her heart felt as sweet as if it were filled with honey.

My son has grown up and knows how to care for others.

Only then did Chen Changyuan feel relieved.

In this age of shortage of medical care and medicine, health is more important than anything else.

He had to hunt more and earn some money so that he could move his mother to town and take her to the hospital for a thorough checkup!

After dinner, Fang Suxia refused to let Chen Changyuan wash the dishes, saying that she was afraid he would be tired. Chen Changyuan couldn't persuade her, so he had to give up.
