Chapter Six: Evil Begets Evil
Zhuzhu didn't speak, she just stood there silently, expressing her wishes.
Jingwu frowned slightly in annoyance, but finally agreed: "Okay, I'll take you there, but it's almost dawn now, so I have to go back for breakfast before I take you to find your mother."
Zhuzhu's eyes lit up instantly, and she nodded.
Jingwu took out her Qiankun bag, made a hand seal, and put her inside. Then, she made another hand seal and went home. When she returned to the attic, Ruan Chongyue was already up in the kitchen, busy making meat pies.
I hadn't been asleep for long when I was woken up by the aroma of meat patties.
Jingwu sprang up quickly, washed up, and went to the kitchen, staring longingly at the meat pie.
"Awu's awake! Come and try your aunt's cooking," Shao Che said with a smile, standing to the side.
When Ruan Chongyue saw her get up, she smiled and handed her a freshly cooked meat pie: "Be careful, it's hot."
"Thank you, Aunt." Jingwu took the meat pie, took a big bite, and let out a satisfied sigh.
It smells so good, so good.
Jingwu, who had been eating sweet potatoes for several days in a row, was extremely satisfied with the meat pie he was eating.
Shao Che stood beside her, eating a meat pie while smiling and saying, "Your aunt's cooking is so good, isn't it? This meat pie is so delicious."
As Jingwu ate the meat pie, he nodded and mumbled, "Auntie's cooking skills are comparable to those of an imperial chef."
Shao Chengyang appeared in front of the two of them at some point, also holding a pancake and munching on it: "Mother, if we go to set up a stall with Father, we'll definitely make a fortune. Raw sweet potatoes are three coins a pound, and the pancakes are five coins each. If we buy two together, we can get a discount of one coin, selling them for seven coins."
Shao Che paused in his eating of the pancake and exchanged a glance with his wife.
That's a good idea. Once we sell these sweet potatoes, we'll have some capital to buy meat. It's worth a try.
Hearing this, Jingwu couldn't help but sigh inwardly. No wonder he was born with both wealth and good fortune, and his destiny was blessed with a lucky star. Even at the age of seven or eight, he already had a knack for business.
Thinking of this, she remembered the beads in her Qiankun bag. After quickly finishing the meat pie, she said to Shao Che, "Uncle, I'm going back to take a nap."
Shao Che was surprised. His niece never had the habit of taking a nap, but thinking of her ability, he belatedly replied, "Okay, I'll call you for lunch."
Jingwu nodded, went up to the attic, took his Qiankun bag, made a hand seal, and teleported to Zhuzhu's house in the next village.
She released the pearl and bestowed some merit upon it, so that it would not be afraid of the sunlight.
The next second, a woman with a full head of white hair came out of her house and looked at the girl standing at the door with surprise.
"Who are you?"
Before Jingwu could speak, Zhuzhu immediately flew towards the woman, trying to hug her, but passed right through her: "Mother~"
Unfortunately, the woman could neither see nor hear, and her eyes remained fixed on Jingwu.
"My name is Jingwu, and I am Zhuzhu's friend."
"Zhuzhu? Have you seen Zhuzhu? Do you know where she is?" The woman immediately stepped forward and grabbed her hand, asking anxiously, "This child, a few years ago her grandmother took her to town, and then no one knows where she went. Her grandmother even fell to her death on the road."
A hint of surprise flashed in Jingwu's eyes: "Did you fall to your death?"
When Zhuzhu's mother heard her ask this, although she was puzzled, she still nodded: "Yes, he fell to his death on that mountain."
Jingwu looked in that direction; it was the place where he had found Zhuzhu last night.
She looked down at the girl beside her and quietly did some mental calculations.
So that's how it is. Zhuzhu's grandmother disliked that she was a girl, and after having a grandson, she wanted to abandon her on the mountain. So she tricked Zhuzhu into waiting for her on the mountain, but unexpectedly, when she was coming down the mountain, she tripped and fell to her death.
Zhuzhu's mother lost her daughter during her postpartum period. She also had to manage her mother-in-law's funeral and take care of her newborn son. She soon fell ill. She was worried about her daughter and couldn't sleep at night. Soon, her black hair turned completely white.
Jingwu raised his eyes to look at the woman in front of him and blinked: "Zhuzhu is on that mountain, not far from where your mother-in-law fell to her death. When you found your mother-in-law, Zhuzhu was still alive."
"What did you say?" Zhuzhu's mother's face turned pale, and she stepped forward to grab her hand: "You said my daughter is right there?"
“Yes.” Jingwu tried to pull her hand away, but the woman held on too tightly, so she let her hold it. “After you gave birth to your son, your mother-in-law disliked that Zhuzhu was a girl. She planned to abandon her on the mountain on the way to town, where she would be eaten by wolves. And she did just that. She told Zhuzhu to wait for her on the mountain while she came down, but she didn’t expect that she would fall to her death first. And Zhuzhu fainted after being starved on the mountain for three days and was eaten by wolves.”
"You...you're talking nonsense!" Zhuzhu's mother couldn't accept it, but in her mind, she kept recalling how her mother-in-law had suggested giving her daughter away more than once when she was pregnant.
She was trembling all over, tears welling up in her eyes: "You're lying to me, aren't you? Zhuzhu must still be alive, right?"
Jingwu looked at her like this, and although he couldn't bear it, he still shook his head.
Zhuzhu's mother fell to the ground, bursting into tears: "I thought Zhuzhu had just gotten lost in town. Even if she was taken away by slave traders, she would at least be sold into a wealthy family as a maid, or worse... well, she would end up in a brothel. At least she would have survived, which is better than being devoured by wild animals and dying such a painful death."
"Zhuzhu, I'm sorry, I'm not capable of protecting you."
Upon hearing this, Zhuzhu had already floated over and hugged her. However, since humans and ghosts are different, her hand only passed through the woman's body.
Helpless, she could only gently brush her hand across the woman's face.
Zhuzhu's mother sensed a gentle breeze and, as if sensing it, looked towards where her daughter was.
"Zhuzhu, is that you?"
Jingwu still couldn't bear it, so he made a hand seal and made Zhuzhu appear.
"Say goodbye properly."
As soon as she finished speaking, she walked to the other side.
When Zhuzhu's mother saw her daughter appear, she rushed forward crying, trying to hug her, but her hand passed right through her soul, and she cried even more desperately.
"Zhuzhu, Mother can't reach you anymore."
"Don't cry, Mother." Zhuzhu had an innocent smile on her face, and her little hand brushed across her face, wanting to wipe away her tears.
The woman could do nothing but weep, "Your grandmother deserves to die! How could she, how could she be so cruel to you? You're just a child!"
Zhuzhu didn't speak, only a smile on her face. When she was being eaten by wild animals before she died, she had resented her grandmother, but now, knowing that she had been punished and died on her way down the mountain, she didn't feel so resentful anymore.
“Mother, I promised my sister that I would be reincarnated after seeing you.”
Zhuzhu's mother was reluctant to let her daughter go, but she also knew that when people die, they go to the underworld to be reincarnated.
"Zhuzhu, go ahead and be reborn into a rich family in your next life, where you can live a life without worrying about food or drink."
Zhuzhu's eyes reddened. Not wanting her mother to see her cry, she turned her gaze to the girl beside her.
Seeing this, Jingwu put her into his Qiankun bag and was about to leave when someone tugged at his clothes.
She turned around and saw the woman crying as she asked, "Will Zhuzhu be reborn into a better family in her next life?"
Upon seeing this, Jingwu answered truthfully: "She did not do anything evil in her life. She was killed by someone close to her. After death, she did not become an evil ghost because of hatred. Logically, she should be able to be reborn into a good family."
"That's good, that's good." The woman stumbled to the stool next to her and muttered to herself.
Jingwu realized that the merit had arrived, so he did not linger any longer and immediately made a hand seal to return home.
