Chapter 215: Shao Wanyan is Dead
The days grew colder, and the leaves on the leaves of the trees in the yard were almost all gone.
That day, Jingwu, wrapped in a cotton-padded coat, hurriedly headed towards the neighbor's courtyard.
A servant just came to inform me that my aunt wants me to go there immediately, as it must be something important.
Jingwu then got off the soft couch and hurriedly headed towards the neighboring courtyard.
As soon as they entered the courtyard, the maidservant guarding the entrance invited them inside.
Inside the house, all five members of the Shao family were present.
Jingwu was stunned for a moment when he saw them.
How strange, why are there so many people here today?
Before she could even ask, Ruan Chongyue immediately stood up and walked towards her, her eyes slightly red and her face filled with complex emotions.
“Awu, news just came from the prison that your mother passed away this morning, and they want us to go and collect her body. You…”
Upon hearing this, Jingwu was struck dumb, as if by a bolt from the blue. He froze on the spot.
Her eyes widened, and she couldn't react for a moment.
Although Yue Huai had said before that Shao Wanyan was nearing the end of her life, she still couldn't quite process the news when she actually heard it.
Seeing her like this, Ruan Chongyue gently hugged her and patted her back: "Awu, if you want to cry, just cry. Don't worry, we will be with you and make sure your mother is properly buried."
Jingwu leaned on her aunt's shoulder, her eyes unfocused, unable to express her feelings at that moment.
She knew that Shao Wanyan deserved what she got, and there was no affection between her and her daughter. However, upon hearing the news, she still felt some strange emotions.
Seeing that she didn't speak, Shao Che walked over and said in a hoarse voice, "Awu, don't be afraid. Your mother is gone, but you still have your uncle and aunt. Even if your aunt and I are gone, you still have your cousins. The Shao family will always be your home."
Upon hearing his words, Jingwu sat up abruptly, instantly regaining his senses.
She looked into the man's eyes and said earnestly, "Uncle, I don't like hearing such metaphors."
"Huh?" Shao Che hadn't reacted yet, looking completely bewildered.
Ruan Chongyue's eyes darted around, and she instantly understood what she meant. She reached out and slapped her husband hard.
"Pah, pah, pah! What nonsense are you talking about? We'll stay with Awu for a very, very long time, right, Awu?"
Ruan Chongyue looked at the girl in front of her and breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that her expression had softened.
She led the girl to sit down and gently patted her hand: "Your uncle is rude, don't take it to heart. Let's discuss what to do about your mother's funeral arrangements."
Jingwu withdrew his gaze, lowered his eyes, thought carefully for a moment, and then asked, "Does the Prince Hui's residence know about this news?"
Upon hearing this, Shao Chengrui put down the teacup he had just picked up and said, "The magistrate initially went to notify the Prince Hui's residence, but after waiting for most of the day and still not seeing Jing Shu come to collect the body, he then notified me."
Jing Wu nodded slightly. It seemed that Jing Shu had confirmed that she was not Shao Wanyan's child.
"Jing Shu is so heartless. Wan Yan dotes on her the most, giving her everything good, yet she didn't even go to collect the body!" Hearing this, Shao Che angrily cursed, "What an ingrate!"
Hearing this, Jingwu sighed softly, looked at his younger brother in the cradle not far away, and said softly.
"Are there any people in the capital who specialize in handling funeral arrangements? If so, please come and handle it according to the rules. I'll cover the cost."
Hearing this, Ruan Chongyue understood what she was thinking and patted her hand: "There are no people in the capital who specialize in handling funerals. Your mother is, after all, a member of the Shao family, so we'll just follow the rules. As for the funeral procession, we don't need to invite too many people. Family members can go and see her off. What do you think, Awu?"
“Okay.” Jingwu didn’t ask any more questions and immediately agreed. She took off the purse from her waist and handed it to her aunt: “There is a hundred taels of silver in there. If it’s not enough, I’ll give you more.”
“I…” Ruan Chongyue reached out to hand the purse back, but the person in front of her immediately cut her off.
"Aunt, if you don't accept it, I'll just find someone outside to do it for me." Jingwu's attitude was firm as he stuffed the purse into her arms.
After all, Shao Wanyan was her biological mother, and she couldn't let her aunt pay for it.
“Okay, I’ll listen to you.” Ruan Chongyue looked at the girl with heartache in her eyes. She put the purse away and then went to make arrangements for the funeral.
Shao Che immediately stood up and followed, worried that his wife wouldn't be able to handle everything by herself.
Shao Chengyang walked up to Jing Wu, rummaged in his pocket, and pulled out an exquisitely crafted golden spider, which he then handed to her.
"Sister, this is a treasure I finally obtained. Can I give it to you?"
Jingwu looked up and saw the lifelike spider. He took a deep breath and said, "Chengyang, if you give a gift to a girl like this, you'll never find a wife."
Upon hearing this, Shao Chengyang scratched his head awkwardly.
He never intended to give the golden spider to anyone else; he originally planned to keep it for himself, given its rarity. He wouldn't have given it to his sister if her mother hadn't passed away.
He just wanted to make his sister happy!
Jingwu saw that his face had turned red and was about to speak when he saw Shao Chengmin walking over from the side.
“I knew it, your spider sister definitely wouldn’t like it. Watch this.” As he spoke, he took out an exquisitely crafted hairpin and handed it over: “Sister, this is the most fashionable hairpin in the capital. Look, isn’t it pretty?”
Upon hearing this, Shao Chengyang pursed his lips and muttered to himself.
My sister wouldn't like any of these jewels; she'd definitely still love her golden spider the most.
Jingwu chuckled as he watched the two of them pull out the items like they were clowns.
"Alright, pack your things away, I'm fine."
Seeing that their little scheme had been exposed, Shao Chengyang and Shao Chengmin immediately scratched their heads awkwardly, their actions perfectly synchronized.
Just as they were about to speak, they heard the older brother sitting next to them speak.
"Alright, you two stop fooling around. I have something to say to A-Wu. You two can go out now."
Hearing this, Shao Chengyang and Shao Chengmin nodded, stuffed the things in their hands into the girl's arms, nimbly picked up the child in the cradle, and walked out.
There was just enough space for one person to hold one child.
Jingwu looked at the thing in his arms and couldn't help but smile.
She put her things away, then looked up at her cousin and asked, "What's wrong, cousin?"
"Awu, should we inform Jing Shu about this as well?"
