Chapter 127: Not Telling Fortunes for Dogs

Jingwu raised an eyebrow, considered for a moment, and said, "I advise you to go home now, otherwise you will never see your granddaughter again."

"What do you mean?" The old woman turned around abruptly, looking at the person in front of her suspiciously: "You're not trying to trick me on purpose, are you? Let me tell you, I'm not so easily fooled. Don't even think about getting 50 coins from me."

“You can go back and check first. If it’s true, then you can give me the divination fee later,” Jingwu said with a light laugh, looking at the person in front of him.

The old woman hesitated for a moment, glanced at the sky, then at the few pastries she hadn't sold, her mind in turmoil.

Her home is quite a distance away, and it takes an hour to go there and back. How much business will that delay?

But the person in front of me spoke with such certainty, if I didn't go back to check, wouldn't something really happen to my granddaughter?

She hesitated for a long time before finally asking.

"May I ask why you say that?"

Jingwu looked at her face and said, "Judging from your face, one of your grandchildren is going to have a bad day. After some calculations, I've determined that your granddaughter will hang herself at home today."

"What?!" The old woman jumped to her feet, her eyes wide with shock as she stared at the person in front of her. "Are you serious? My granddaughter was perfectly fine, how could she hang herself? Are you lying to me?"

“Last month, you forced your granddaughter to work in the fields. Did she come back particularly late that day, and when she did, she was disheveled?”

"Yes...yes." A hint of hesitation flashed across the old woman's face before she said, "She said she tripped and fell on the road. What does that have to do with her hanging herself?"

“A young girl working alone in the fields will always attract attention. After being bullied, she tried to pretend that nothing had happened, but when she woke up this morning, she felt nauseous and thought she was pregnant. Afraid that you would beat and scold her, she decided to end her life.”

Upon hearing this, the old woman's face turned pale instantly. She didn't even bother to pack up her stall and hurriedly ran home.

She was biased towards her grandson, but she didn't want her granddaughter to die either, since she had raised her from a young age.

She ran all the way home, and as soon as she entered the house, she didn't even care about the sweat on her brow, and immediately went to look for her granddaughter.

As soon as I opened the door, I saw my granddaughter crying as she threw a rope onto the roof beam.

"Qianqian, what are you doing? You silly child!"

The old woman rushed over, pulled the girl off the stool, and slapped her hard on the buttocks twice.

"Grandma." As soon as the girl named Qianqian saw her, tears welled up in her eyes, and she threw herself into her arms, sobbing softly, "I can't go on living."

The old woman was still quite frightened by what she had just witnessed, and her legs were still weak. She gently stroked her granddaughter's hair, her tone more tender than ever before.

"Don't be afraid, don't be afraid. Grandma will take you to see a doctor. It's not necessarily that you're pregnant; it's just that you ate something bad."

Qianqian looked up at her, tears still glistening in the corners of her eyes: "You know?"

"It's Grandma's fault. Grandma shouldn't have let you go to work in the fields alone that day." The old woman felt a pang of guilt and said softly, "It's alright, Grandma can sell pastries to support you."

Upon hearing this, Qianqian buried her face in her arms and burst into tears.

The old woman also held her granddaughter and couldn't help wiping away tears.

After the two embraced and cried for a while, they went out and returned to their stall.

The old woman took out fifty coins and handed them to the girl in front of her.

"Thank you so much, Master, for saving my Qianqian's life. But I'd like to ask, who was it that bullied my Qianqian? Can you figure it out?"

Jingwu looked at the person in front of him and nodded: "There's a man named Da Niu from the next village. He's been eyeing your granddaughter for a long time and wanted to marry her, but your son and daughter-in-law thought they were too poor and were afraid their daughter would suffer, so they refused. That day, he saw your daughter working alone in the field, so he had evil intentions and took advantage of her."

"What a bastard! I'm bringing some people over here right now, and I'll beat him to a pulp!" The old woman was furious. She grabbed her granddaughter's hand and slapped it hard. "You said you were bullied, why didn't you tell me when you got home?"

Qianqian remained silent, only shedding tears.

Looking at her, Jingwu sighed and said, "You're not pregnant. You just ate something undercooked yesterday, which caused the nausea. Don't worry about it."

Upon hearing this, Qianqian looked up abruptly and asked, "Really?"

"Really, if you don't believe me, you can find a doctor to take your pulse."

"I believe you! I believe you!" Qianqian cried tears of joy, a smile finally appearing on her face: "Thank goodness, thank goodness it didn't happen..."

The old lady breathed a sigh of relief, thanked them repeatedly, packed up her stall, and took her granddaughter to find a doctor to check her pulse again, just to be on the safe side.

Jingwu didn't say anything more, put the 50 coins into his pocket, glanced at the sky, and decided to wait a while longer.

Today, there is one more divination.

The guests didn't arrive; Yue Huai arrived first.

He carried a food box, sat down next to the girl, and brought out the hot pastries and snacks made by the cook.

"Try it quickly, it's fresh out of the oven, I'll bring it to you right away."

"What kind of pastries are these? I've never seen them before," Jingwu asked, pointing to the plate of reddish pastries.

"Peony Crystal Cake, a pastry only available in the palace." Yue Huai placed the plate in front of her and said with a smile, "The princess loves this, so the Han family's chefs all learned this recipe from the palace chefs. Why don't you try it?"

Jingwu picked up a piece of pastry, took a bite, and his eyes lit up: "It smells so good, sweet and sour, it's quite delicious."

She stuffed half a piece of pastry into her mouth all at once, and said with a smile.

Yue Huai watched her eat happily, and the corners of his mouth couldn't help but turn up.

He picked up the teapot he had brought and poured her a cup of tea: "Don't choke, have some tea."

Jingwu nodded and took a sip of tea.

Before she could put her teacup down, she heard a malicious voice.

"Oh, whose young lady is this, that Young Master Yue would personally serve her tea?"

A man walked casually to the stall, glancing at it with disdain.

"Oh, what a charlatan. 50 coins a fortune telling, money back if it doesn't work." He sneered, took out a tael of silver and threw it on the table: "Here, I'll give you a tael. You tell me when the Han family will fall. If you tell me something that satisfies me, I'll give you another hundred taels right away."

Hearing these presumptuous words, Jingwu frowned slightly, and with a gentle wave of his hand, the silver coin flew into the air and was thrown back at him.

I don't tell fortunes for dogs.
