Chapter Fifty-Seven: Mountain Spring Water

Upon learning that Lin Yang was looking for a place to stay, Luna immediately extended an invitation, saying that she was willing to give Lin Yang an empty room in her house as a place to rest.

No one has lived in that room since her husband died.

Fortunately, Luna has been diligent in cleaning over the years, so the place is not dirty or messy, and everything is in good order.

"Thank you then."

Lin Yang pondered for a moment, thanked him sincerely, and decided to go.

He wasn't worried about the cost of renting a hotel every day; it was just that hotels have a lot of people coming and going, and the large flow of guests makes disinfection a problem, as it's easy to get infected with infectious diseases.

Luna's home is located deep in the mountains, where there are few people. As long as Lin Yang and Luna maintain good hygiene and keep a safe distance every day, the risk of infection is actually very low.

Only by ensuring one's own health can one better carry out rescue work.

Lin Yang and Luna first took a bus for an hour to reach the foot of a mountain, and then walked along a rugged and muddy path into the mountain for about half an hour before arriving at a brick house.

The house was simple, but clean and tidy.

"Mom, you're back. And who is this?" Hearing the commotion outside, a pretty young girl came out of the house.

She wore simple, coarse cloth clothes, but paired with her slender figure and large, watery eyes, she possessed an indescribable natural beauty, like a spirit nurtured by the mountains.

Lin Yang was lost in thought after just one glance.

It's said that Southeast Asia has many beautiful women, and it's true!

Feeling a little embarrassed by Lin Yang's gaze, the girl lowered her head, her timid appearance making her even more endearing.

“Marilyn, this is Mr. Lin Yang from China. My mother had a seizure at the train station today, and he saved me.”

When the matter was brought up, Luna couldn't help but clasp her hands together in gratitude to Lin Yang, her eyes filled with tears.

During special periods, other doctors can charge a large sum of money for prescribing just a few medications.

Only Lin Yang didn't want a single penny; in fact, he even paid out of his own pocket.

You should know that this amount of money may not be much for an ordinary family, but for the mother and daughter who have been living deep in the mountains for a long time, it is three months' worth of living expenses.

"I see. Thank you so much, Mr. Lin Yang. Thank you so much for saving my mother."

After learning the whole story, Marilyn looked at Lin Yang with even more shyness, her cheeks turning rosy, perfectly showcasing the pure and lively charm unique to young girls.

She turned around, fetched a bowl of water from inside the house, and handed it to Lin Yang, wanting him to rest.

However, Lin Yang hesitated the moment he took the bowl of water.

The water looks somewhat murky and doesn't seem like it's safe to drink directly.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Lin Yang."

Luna noticed Lin Yang's predicament, bowed apologetically to him, and explained.

“We have been suffering from drought for more than half a year. All the rivers and streams nearby have dried up, and the wells are dry. The mountain springs are almost the only water source for the entire city.”

"Of course, those rich people can buy purified water from elsewhere, or boil and filter spring water, so they don't have to worry about the water shortage caused by the drought."

"But what can we do? Our family is poor."

At this point, Luna gave a bitter smile, her wrinkles deepening with the smile, a testament to the hardships and struggles she had endured over the years.

"But don't worry, we've been drinking this spring water for two or three years now, and there haven't been any problems. It's just that last month, for some reason, the color became a little off, and the taste changed a bit too. Maybe it's because the weather is too dry."

Lin Yang's furrowed brows relaxed slightly. Although he was thirsty, he did not drink the bowl of dim water. Instead, he put the bowl aside and looked serious.

"How many people here drink spring water?"

"At least half."

Luna thought for a moment and gave a conservative answer.

She didn't know why Lin Yang asked this question, but since it was a question from her savior, Luna naturally had to do her best to answer it.

“At first, only my daughter and I drank it, but because of the drought, other water sources did not have enough water, so more and more people started drinking the spring water.”

A flash of inspiration struck Lin Yang.

He considered a possibility, and his heart began to race.

"Where is this mountain spring? Take me there quickly."

Lin Yang suddenly became agitated, startling Luna and her daughter.

“Okay, Mr. Lin Yang, I’ll take you there.” Marilyn stepped forward and volunteered, “The source of the spring is not far from our house, it’s only a ten-minute walk.”

Although the mother and daughter lived deep in the mountains, they were not spared and successively contracted infectious diseases, and their health deteriorated day by day.

Marilyn couldn't bear to let her mother, Luna, who had just fainted and was in a weak state, travel all the way from town back to the countryside.

Lin Yang nodded, not daring to delay, and immediately went out with Marilyn.

Fifteen minutes later.

In a secluded mountain forest, Lin Yang, led by Marilyn, trudged forward, and sure enough, he found a spring on a small hillside, from which water was gushing out.

Lin Yang reached out and scooped up a handful.

Upon closer inspection, it was crystal clear.

Lin Yang stuck out his tongue and took another bite.

Sweet and pure.

But why is the water I drink at Luna's house cloudy and yellowish?

There was even a strange smell that was hard to describe.

"What's wrong, Mr. Lin Yang? Is there a problem?" Marilyn couldn't help but feel nervous when she saw Lin Yang's serious expression, and asked cautiously.

Lin Yang opened his mouth, but instead of answering the question directly, he continued to press for an answer.

"Young lady, do you usually fetch water from this spring?"

"No, the spring is too far away. My mom and I usually fetch water a little downstream, where it's closer."

Especially after both mother and daughter fell ill.

To conserve energy, the mother and daughter would even deliberately reduce their water intake to decrease the number of times they needed to fetch water.

Wait until the symptoms improve before going to get water.

"Take me to see it."

Lin Yang glanced at Marilyn's bright and clear eyes, sighed, and had already guessed most of the ins and outs of this epidemic, just waiting for verification.

After walking for about twenty more minutes, Marilyn led Lin Yang to a stream where the terrain was flatter.

She pointed to the stream: "Mr. Lin Yang, this is where my mother and I fetched water. This stream and the spring we just saw share the same source."

Lin Yang squatted down.

As expected, it was just as he had imagined.

The clean, clear water at the spring turns pale yellow here, and a faint, putrid odor can be smelled in the air.

Having made up his mind, Lin Yang continued walking upstream along the stream, the path winding and rugged.

Marilyn followed behind, struggling to keep up.

Lin Yang was a little anxious and didn't notice that the little girl behind him was gradually turning pale.
