Chapter 191 Escape for Your Life

Yan Yu stepped forward and opened the door. "Lord Wang."

Behind Wang Yichun stood dozens of soldiers with swords.

The fake Su Yan was startled and quickly gestured for him to come in, "Lord Wang, please come in and speak with me."

Wang Yichun waved his hand, "I won't take up your time, sir. Prime Minister Su is serving porridge today, and I have specially selected the elite guards from the mansion to protect him, in case you are disturbed by the commoners."

Fake Su Yan thought to himself, "He's doing a good deed by serving porridge, so what's wrong with that?"

His face was full of smiles, "Lord Wang's consideration is very thoughtful, I would be disrespectful to accept it."

Wang Yichun smiled even more obsequiously, and waved his hand, "If Prime Minister Su suffers even the slightest harm, I will take your lives!"

After saying this, he bowed again, turned around, and left.

But someone important had come to see him.

The fake Su Yan and Yan Yu then went to the entrance of the government office to distribute porridge in a grand manner.

Although the fake Su Yan knew very little about the imperial court, he understood that distributing porridge was an excellent opportunity for the people to have close contact with Su Yan and to address the aforementioned grievances.

For these officers and soldiers, protecting his safety was secondary; their main concern was preventing the people from talking to him too much.

The abacus beads are practically hitting him in the face.

At the entrance of the government office, three long queues formed at the three porridge distribution stalls.

There were also yamen runners carrying whips, lashing at those who tried to cut in line.

He was still cursing under his breath, "Damn it, you want a beating, huh? Get in line!"

Beneath his whip was a thin little boy, a bright red welt running across his face.

The boy knelt down, kowtowing repeatedly and crying, "Please, sir! Let me have the porridge first, my mother is starving!"

The fierce-looking constable raised his foot and kicked the boy in the chest. "Get the hell out of here! Starving to death just means you're unlucky! Get out of here now, or I'll make you hit me again!"

The boy fell to the ground with a large bump on his forehead.

Someone in the crowd urged, "You should leave now, you should leave!"

The boy raised the dirty back of his hand to wipe his face, stood up, and staggered home.

His mother was starving to death, and he hadn't had a proper meal in a long time either; his stomach was full of grass roots.

The fake Su Yan watched with a cold face, thinking of the banquets Wang Yichun had hosted these past two nights.

If it were converted into grain, it would be more than enough to feed these people for a year!

Yan Yu clenched his fists tightly; there was nothing he could do but watch.

Taking one more step could expose the adults hiding in the shadows.

The fake Su Yan walked to the stall in the middle and stirred the porridge with a large soup ladle.

The rice and water are evenly divided, which is his favorite type of porridge.

But the starving people who came to collect porridge naturally wanted the thickest kind of porridge.

Two trembling hands, holding a bowl, brought it close to the fake Su Yan.

The fake Su Yan took the bowl and filled it to the brim.

The gaunt old man's hands were covered in calluses; he was a farmer who had spent most of his life cultivating the land.

"My lord, I... my land..."

The old man spoke breathlessly.

The soldiers behind the fake Su Yan drew their swords in unison. "Insolence! Anyone who wants porridge must not use foul language to offend the adults' ears!"

The old man shivered, quickly took the bowl, and, ignoring the heat, poured the contents into his mouth.

The fake Su Yan raised his hand, intending to remind him that it was hot, but upon seeing this, he lowered his hand again.

The porridge distribution proceeded silently, and the line gradually shortened.

Yan Yu did her best to fill every bowl to the brim.

This is the peace and prosperity that Your Majesty knows, where the people live in peace and contentment, no longer suffering from hunger.

How many people will be displaced after the Wang family was created as the first noble family?

"My lord! My lord, you must do justice for me!"

Until a woman who looked somewhat crazy grabbed the fake Su Yan's hand.

The soldiers' alarms blared, and they immediately rushed forward, knives drawn, shouting, "Let go! Let go right now!"

The woman knelt down, crying out, "My daughter! They've taken my daughter away!"

The woman didn't ask for porridge; she came today to complain to Su Yan.

The soldiers rushed forward and roughly dragged the woman to the back.

Finally, the fake Su Yan could no longer tolerate it and threw the soup ladle back into the pot. "Outrageous! Let her go!"

Yan Yu quickly put down her soup spoon and advised, "There are so many people waiting behind, sir, please don't delay."

The officers released her, saying, "Get lost! If you keep bothering us, you'll regret it!"

The fake Su Yan's face turned black with anger. Why did he have to suffer all this humiliation?

What a bunch of beasts!

No, you're worse than pigs and dogs!

After the pot of porridge was empty, the fake Su Yan, seeing the long queue behind him, banged the pot loudly, "Are they all dead?! Bring another pot! It has to be so thick that chopsticks can't be stuck in it!"

The long process of distributing porridge lasted from noon until night.

Festive red lanterns were hung everywhere, but the porridge distribution remained silent.

The pressure made Yan Yu's throat feel constricted.

Until a child handed me a bowl containing an open slip of paper.

It read, "Return to Beijing immediately."

Yan Yu was thrilled; this was an adult's handwriting!

This means the adults have obtained the evidence!

But looking at the long queue in front of him, he couldn't put down the soup spoon he was holding.

He could get soldiers to distribute porridge, but they would inevitably just go through the motions.

Either the porridge was so thin it contained almost no rice, or only a tiny amount was served.

If you don't care, can't see the suffering of others, and have no compassion, how can you possibly give alms with a kind heart?

Until the firelight illuminated the night in Yangzhou.

"It's gone off! It's gone off!"

The people fled in all directions like birds and beasts.

Many people carried wooden buckets and ran towards the fire.

The houses in Yangzhou were mostly made of wood, and the fires raged continuously.

Many of the starving people who were in line ran away, shouting, "My house!"

Yan Yu put down her soup spoon, stopped someone, and asked, "Where did the fire start?"

"Hey, the Jiang residence! The richest one in Yangzhou! Get out of my way, I need to put out a fire!"

The man hurriedly bumped into the goose feather and ran away.

Yan Yu frowned as she watched the man's back, feeling a twitching sensation in her right eye.

He looked at the fake Su Yan, "Sir, we..."

"Arrest these two! Their lives are irrelevant!" shouted one of Wang Yichun's men.

The officers and soldiers drew their swords and slashed at the fake Su Yan.

"Insolence! I am the Prime Minister, aren't you afraid of losing your heads?!" The fake Su Yan stared wide-eyed in shock.

Yan Yu leaped into the air, shouting, "My lord, let's go!"

The fake Su Yan quickly followed, still cursing, "What kind of guts do these people have? I am the Prime Minister! The Prime Minister!"

"The Prime Minister is second only to the Emperor, and I also have the Imperial Sword in my hand. What's wrong with Yangzhou?!"

Yan Yu was annoyed by the nagging. "Your plan has been exposed. Run for your life! If you get caught, no one will save you!"

Upon hearing this, the fake Su Yan tore off his hair without saying a word, shouting, "Go to hell! You're just like your master, your hearts are black! Who did I risk my life for!"

"#!%%'/'#"

A torrent of foul language, flowing endlessly.

Yan Yu's ears were burning from the scolding. "Stop, stop, stop! Help, help, stop reading!"

The village chief, Plum Blossom Rice, finally stopped cursing. "That's more like it."

A dense swarm of iron arrows rained down from the sky. Yan Yu wielded his sword with incredible speed, and Mei Hua Mi was also quite skilled.
