Chapter 45: Tricky People

For businesses opening today, it's still very important to build good relationships with the neighbors.

After that, she delivered braised food to several neighboring shops in turn.

By the time she finished delivering the last batch, the shop was already full of people.

"Hey, aren't you the one who sets up a stall at the west alley entrance? I wanted to buy something there today, but I couldn't find you." A newlywed woman dressed in fine cloth called out excitedly when she saw Ye Panjiu.

Ye Panjiu replied warmly, "This is my sister-in-law. We've moved here to open a shop. I'm bringing you some meat. Please tell your friends in the neighborhood."

"No problem, the shopkeeper is still so easy to talk to." The bride smiled brightly, pleased with the deal.

“Little sister, the place is full.” Sun said, pulling Ye Panjiu over.

"Set up tables and chairs outside the shop as well, and don't let anyone into the backyard," Ye Panjiu whispered in reply.

Sun nodded and then turned to order Ye Erniu around.

The rich aroma of braised food filled the entire alley, attracting many passersby to come in due to its popularity.

I didn't originally intend to eat there, but seeing so many people in the shop, I was tempted.

Standing by the second-floor window, looking across the street, Manager Zhou of Xiangweifang clenched his teeth.

He said angrily, "Go now! Take that sign from the doorway inside, stop making a fool of yourself there!"

The waiter didn't dare say anything more and ran out quickly.

He tried to buy a son from Ye Panjiu, but failed.

He didn't get discouraged, so he started trying it himself. He had the cook in the backyard try it for three days and three nights, but it still didn't taste right.

I don't know what's missing, but it just doesn't feel right.

But after trying for so long, he was unwilling to give up selling braised food to earn this money, so he directly chose the one with the closest taste to start selling.

Sales were so-so; basically, no one who tried it came back to order it again.

He was already feeling a bit anxious.

Seeing Ye Panjiu's shop open and still packed with people made me feel even worse, like an ant crawling on a hot oil pan.

When Ye Panjiu walked out of the shop again, she noticed with keen insight that the sign for Xiangweifang had been removed.

She smiled and didn't seem to care.

...

"This winter is really cold." A young scholar dressed in silk rubbed his icy hands together and kept breathing warm air into them.

A hint of disgust flashed in Du Pengzhi's eyes, but he quickly concealed it and smiled, "Brother-in-law is right. Then let's go have some hot food for lunch."

This scholar was Wang's brother-in-law. When Wang learned that he had passed the imperial examination and become a scholar, she asked him to teach this brother-in-law more.

The silk that this brother-in-law was wearing was something Du Pengzhi could never afford. Standing next to his brother-in-law, he looked just like a gofer.

Wang Shuo nodded and walked ahead, completely disregarding whether Du Pengzhi could keep up.

Du Pengzhi followed quickly with a cold look in his eyes, and the two walked out of the academy.

Wang Shuo grew up in the luxurious Wang family and is extremely picky about food.

So he headed straight for the Fragrance Shop.

Du Pengzhi felt extremely annoyed. It was such a cold day, and it was just lunch, yet they had to travel so far to eat there. He still had to copy books.

When they arrived at the alley entrance of Xiangweifang, Wang Shuo squinted at the crowded shop next to him. "I've never seen this place before. With so many people, it must be delicious."

After saying that, he ignored Du Pengzhi and walked towards the shop.

Du Pengzhi clenched his fists, but stopped in his tracks when he saw Ye Panjiu and the Ye family.

How could it be her?!

How could the Ye family have the money to buy a shop in such a prime location in the county?!

With so many people, how much money must they be making?

Thinking back to what his sister said about the day the Ye family came out of the noodle shop in town, he had only assumed that the Ye family were going to work at the noodle shop. Now that he thought about it, the Ye family might actually be able to afford it.

So he didn't have to pay for the two of them's meal today. Wang Shuo always ate expensive food, and he always insisted on paying for it. Where would he get so much money?

A glint flashed in his eyes, and a smile finally broke out on his face.

Wang Shuo arrived at the perfect time; just as a group of people left, he plopped down and grabbed a seat.

Ye Erniu came over and neatly wiped the table. "What would you like to eat, sir? Braised pork is ten coins a bowl, and braised vegetables are five coins a bowl."

"One bowl for each of us, young master, just to have a taste," Wang Shuo replied.

Just as Du Pengzhi was about to sit opposite Wang Shuo, Ye Erniu kicked the stool aside and sneered, "This shop doesn't sell to dogs."

Wang Shuo picked up the hot water, took a sip, and watched the show with interest.

Du Pengzhi's face turned ashen with anger. "What are you saying, Second Brother? I'm a scholar now! Think carefully before you speak!"

"So what if I'm a scholar? Do I not have the right to refuse to sell it to you?" Ye Erniu glared at him without fear.

Ye Panjiu noticed the situation and put down her bowl before walking over.

"Second Brother is right, this shop will not be sold to any member of your Du family," she said with a smile.

Du Pengzhi wanted to argue further, but Wang Shuo waved his hand and said, "Alright, just go eat at the Xiangweifang restaurant next door, and come find me after you're done."

He naturally disliked his nephew-in-law Du Pengzhi, and he hated the father and daughter surnamed Liu, whom he considered nothing more than servants of the Wang family.

He would never speak up for Du Pengzhi.

Du Pengzhi was furious, but he didn't dare to disobey Wang Shuo, so he could only smile and agree before turning to leave.

He was also hoping that the Wang family would give him an official position.

Wang Shuo tapped the table. "The money's paid."

Du Pengzhi gritted his teeth, still smiling, and took out fifteen coins, placing them on the table.

I couldn't help but feel that it was too expensive; that amount of money could have been used to order a dish at Xiangweifang!

Ye Panjiu felt a surge of satisfaction watching Du Pengzhi suffer a setback.

Only a sycophant like Du Pengzhi could put on such a show in front of her.

She couldn't be bothered to pay him any more attention and turned to walk into the shop.

Du Pengzhi originally wanted to say a few more words to Ye Panjiu separately, but seeing that she had left, and considering Wang Shuo, he didn't dare to call her again.

If Wang Shuo sees this and tells Wang Shi, it wouldn't be good to upset her for no reason.

After the braised food arrived, Wang Shuo frowned as he looked at the strange-looking pile of things in the bowl. He pointed at Ye Erniu and said, "Come here and tell me, what are all these things?"

Ye Erniu walked over and replied enthusiastically, "These are pig intestines and pig stomach, and the rest is meat from the pig's head."

Wang Shuo looked disgusted, covered his nose, picked up the bowl of braised food, and smashed it down. "How dare you! You dare give me this kind of thing to eat!"

People around stopped eating and looked over.

Ye Erniu frowned, and the smile on his face disappeared.

Wang Shuo stood up and roared, "Is this food for humans?!"

Ye Panjiu strode out, took out ten copper coins, and said coldly, "If you don't like it, I'll refund your money, but I'll keep the bowl fee. Please go eat somewhere else!"

Wang Shuo ignored her completely and continued cursing, "A bunch of scoundrels, how dare you bully me like this! Do you even know who I am!"

Ye Panjiu laughed in exasperation, "I'm running a business, how am I supposed to know who my customers are?"
