Chapter 1

The morning sunlight was still blocked by the courtyard wall, making the room half-lit and half-dark, a blur of day and night.

"You're going to divorce me?" Chu Jinjin thought she had misheard. She remained kneeling respectfully, looking up in disbelief. "Mother, what did you say?"

Being divorced on the very first day of her marriage is unprecedented in the entire capital. If it's true, her reputation is ruined, and she'll be gossiped about for the rest of her life.

It must be that I didn't sleep well last night and am hallucinating.

She just got married yesterday, and she's still wearing her wedding dress. How could that be?

Chu Jinjin's family was one of the most prominent merchants in the capital. Her dowry extended from the Chu family to the Xu family, so much so that it couldn't be stored in the storeroom and filled half the courtyard.

However, no amount of money could bridge the gap in status between the two families.

She was the daughter of a merchant, and her husband's family was the Xu family, whose ancestors had once produced a prime minister.

Chu Jinjin never thought about marrying into a wealthy family. She was very clear that when a woman gets married, she is not marrying into a social class, but marrying a man.

Xu Wenda had feelings for her and fell in love with her at first sight, which is why she married him. Otherwise, even if he were a prince or a general, she wouldn't have married him if he didn't love her as a person.

Lady Xu, sitting in the grand chair, gave a strained smile: "It's not a divorce, it's a separation."

Chu Jinjin looked at her intently, making sure she hadn't misheard, then slowly straightened up and calmly asked, "May I ask, Mother, has your daughter-in-law done anything wrong?"

Last night, on their wedding night, Xu Wenda drank too much and vomited incessantly as soon as he entered the room, eventually even vomiting several mouthfuls of blood.

It must be a stomach injury.

Chu Jinjin was so worried that she didn't sleep all night. Logically speaking, in such a special case, she could come to pay her respects later, but she still insisted on following the rules.

If you like someone, you should think about them and respect their family.

Lady Xu, feeling guilty, picked up her teacup and pretended to drink tea.

Chu Jinjin managed to remain calm, but Xia Feng, her personal maid who had come with her as part of her dowry, stamped her foot anxiously: "Say something! Why are you bullying us like this?"

Chu Jinjin has a personal maid, and so does Madam Xu, whose maid is even more formidable.

The old nanny stepped forward and sneered, "Young Master is usually in such good health. He never takes medicine all year round, and he's never even caught a cold. You've made him vomit blood as soon as you entered the door. Who knows what might happen if this goes on for a long time."

Chu Jinjin frowned: "That's it?"

Before the engagement, both families consulted a master to match the birth charts of the two people. If there were any problems, they would have been detected long ago.

Obviously not because of that.

"What else could it be?" The old nanny said impatiently. "Madam is kind-hearted and has decided to tell everyone that you initiated the divorce, and that you and the young master have never consummated your marriage. I advise you, a merchant's daughter, not to be ungrateful. If you make a scene, you'll be the one who suffers."

Chu Jinjin has been in the world of the apocalypse for more than two years and rarely loses her temper, but that doesn't mean she has no temper at all.

Everything has been arranged; we just need to notify her directly.

Chu Jinjin stopped Xia Feng from arguing with a wink, and raised an eyebrow, saying, "May I ask, Madam Xu, since the divorce papers haven't been signed yet, shouldn't I still be the young mistress of the Xu family?"

Old Mrs. Xu was taken aback: "Of course."

"Since that's the case, daughter-in-law, you'd better straighten out the family's reputation." Chu Jinjin coldly looked at the smug old nanny. "You, a mere servant, dare to say that your mistress is a merchant's daughter? You've got some nerve! Xia Feng, slap her!"

The old nanny trembled with fear and stammered for help: "Madam."

Madam Xu turned her head away, her gaze darting away.

Normally, no one would dare to do that, but the situation is different now. No matter what, the Xu family was in the wrong. Let's just say it was just a way for her to vent her anger.

As a personal maid, Xia Feng was very experienced in slapping people. She grabbed the old nanny's chin with one hand and swung her other hand, delivering two crisp slaps.

Blood immediately appeared at the corner of the old woman's mouth.

After ten repetitions, Chu Jinjin calmly called for a stop.

Firstly, she was disciplining the old servant; secondly, she was testing the old woman, Lady Xu.

Even when beating a dog, one must consider its owner. If she agreed to beating the old nanny who had been with her for decades, it must mean something serious had happened.

What could it be?

Chu Jinjin knew she wouldn't get anything out of him here, so she gave a perfunctory bow and took her leave.

Last night, Xu Wenda vomited blood, which terrified her family. As a new bride, it was inconvenient for doctors to come and go, so they carried her to the study.

Several servants stood at the door of the study. When they saw Chu Jinjin coming, they hurriedly bowed and said with difficulty, "Young Madam, the young master just took his medicine and went to sleep. The doctor said that no one is allowed to disturb him."

Chu Jinjin smiled.

It's really impressive how thoughtful this family is in making all the arrangements.

After today, this will become the top news story in the entire capital.

Her reputation is ruined, and the Xu family will also find it difficult to escape unscathed.

What do you mean by thinking of her and proposing a divorce? Anyone with eyes can see that it's impossible. This is to show the world how kind the Xu family is.

After the incident, Xu Wenda would definitely remarry. His career had only just begun, and if he got into a fight with me, and I accidentally scratched his face, it would damage his reputation.

That's quite a clever scheme.

Xia Feng was furious and decided to go all out. He jumped up and shouted, "Xu Wenda, you coward! Bah! What did you say when you asked me to deliver a letter to Miss? I must have been blind!"

Chu Jinjin did not make things difficult for the servants.

It's no use, she can't just kill him.

Xia Feng's true nature was revealed. He rolled up his sleeves, ready to fight, and said angrily, "Miss, don't worry about me. I'll risk my life today, but I'll make Xu Wenda give you an explanation."

Chu Jinjin shook her head slightly, thought for a moment, and then turned and went back to her own courtyard.

The red candles were still burning.

The bright red dragon and phoenix auspicious quilt was neatly folded, and the bright red silk ribbons on the dowry were still waiting for her, the mistress of the house, to untie them herself.

Like a dream that had gone from red to somewhat eerie.

Chu Jinjin stared blankly for a moment, then picked up the stool.
