Chapter 12 Being kicked out

What? Ganli almost thought he had misheard.

The actions of the elderly couple clearly showed that they still cared about their daughter and wanted what was best for her. She thought that once things were out in the open, she could stay and the matter of settling down would be settled.

But who knew that Old Man Gan had no intention of letting her and Chen Pan'er settle in the Gan family?

Why is that?

Gan Li looked at Old Man Gan with a bewildered expression, but the latter seemed to understand the confusion in her eyes and repeated:

“I can’t let you register your household in the Gan family. They say that once a daughter is married, she’s like water spilled from a cup. You’ve been married for so many years now, there’s no reason for you to transfer your household registration back.”

Ganli regained her senses and frowned, saying, "Father, if you won't let me register my household, what will happen to me and Pan'er? Are you still blaming me?"

The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became, and she quickly assured him, "I was blinded by greed before. I swear to you, I will never be like that again!"

"I don't care what you do with the household registration, just don't try to take advantage of the Gan family again!" Old Man Gan said firmly. "You think I should trust you? You said the same thing when you came to ask me for the recipe. I believed you, and then what?"

Gan Li was speechless after hearing this, and her mind replayed the scene of the original owner making a solemn oath in front of Old Man Gan with three fingers raised.

She couldn't refute the facts, but she didn't want to give up so easily and wanted to try again.

Unexpectedly, before she could speak, Old Man Gan interrupted, "Forget it, I won't bring up the past anymore. But it's absolutely impossible for me to accept you into the Gan family again."

However, we are father and daughter after all, and I can't bear to see you wandering around. So, we have a plot of land south of the village with a few houses. Although they're a bit dilapidated, they can be lived in if we tidy them up. If you really have nowhere else to go, you can stay there for now.”

"But our household registration..."

"Household registration is not under my jurisdiction! If you're interested, go ask the village chief."

Seeing that Old Man Gan's attitude was resolute, Gan Li knew that there was no way to get through to him, so she turned to look at Old Lady Gan.

When Grandma Gan saw her daughter looking at her with pleading eyes, her eyes brimming with tears, she felt incredibly sorry for her, and her heart ached. She wanted to speak, but then she thought of something else… She hardened her heart and lowered her head, refusing to look at her daughter.

Seeing this, Gan Li couldn't help but feel disappointed, knowing that her chances of staying in the Gan family with Chen Pan'er were completely over.

She could understand Old Man Gan's decision. If anyone was to blame, it was the original owner's past blunders. The Gan family didn't know that she had a different soul inside her body, so it was understandable that they didn't dare to trust her anymore.

Fortunately, although Old Man Gan seemed heartless, he actually left her a place to stay, letting her live in the house in the south of the village.

On closer reflection, this might not be a bad thing. This is where Gan Li grew up, and her family is here. It's much better than settling down in some unfamiliar place.

As for the household registration issue, we can only think of a solution later.

Thinking of this, Gan Li felt a little relieved and nodded to Old Man Gan: "In that case, I will listen to Father. After all, I have disappointed you."

Upon hearing this, Old Man Gan couldn't help but glance at her, his eyes filled with surprise. He had thought that, given his daughter's temperament, she would definitely make a scene, but he hadn't expected her to accept it so easily?

Did the sun rise in the west today?

But whatever the case, it's good that she accepted it.

Old Man Gan nodded with a stern face: "I'm not well, and your mother's legs aren't good either, so we won't take you there."

Ganli thought about it carefully, and a route came to mind. She nodded and said, "We can go there ourselves."

As she spoke, she looked up at the two people in front of her, only to see them both turn their heads away, looking as if they didn't want to look at her anymore. She sighed inwardly and greeted them softly, "Father, Mother, I'm leaving now."

She went to the main room and called Chen Pan'er, who was sitting restlessly inside, to come out with her.

Watching the two figures, one big and one small, walking hand in hand outside, Grandma Gan couldn't bear it after all. She called them back, rushed to the kitchen to grab a pot, and then went back into the house to roll up her two nearly new cotton quilts that she was reluctant to use, and stuffed them into Gan Li's arms.

She tried to keep a straight face and said, "There's nothing over there, so here's for you to use in case of emergency. You don't need to return it."

After saying that, he turned and went back into the house.

Gan Li looked at the things in her hand, thinking that since no one had lived there for a long time, there must be nothing there, so she didn't refuse. After thanking Old Lady Gan, she took Chen Pan'er's hand and turned to leave.

Watching the two figures disappear completely through the doorway, Old Lady Gan finally couldn't hold back her tears and cried out, "What a terrible thing to do! When has Ali ever suffered so much in her life?"

She then complained to her husband, "You too! How long have those two thatched huts been uninhabited? How are they supposed to live there now? She's our own daughter, you could at least ask her to stay one night, and then have someone move her over once things are settled."

Old Gan felt bad listening to his wife's complaints.

"You think I don't feel sorry for her? But you know her personality. Once she's settled in, do you expect her to move out? Who knows what kind of trouble she'll cause?"

Old Mrs. Gan had been married to him for many years, and she sensed something from his words. She asked doubtfully, "You don't mean to doubt that her divorce from Chen Danian is real, do you?"

Old Gan didn't say anything.

He wasn't sure if his daughter had really agreed to a divorce. Although he had seen all the divorce papers and household registration documents, he was too afraid to believe anything again after being so thoroughly deceived by his daughter.
