Gan Tao Niang had her eldest son push her wheelchair, and they rushed home in a flurry. As soon as she entered the door, she couldn't wait to call out:
"Tao'er! Come out quickly, your mother has good news for you!"
Gan Tao was tidying up the wild vegetables drying in the yard when she heard her mother's words. Her brows furrowed and a bad feeling rose in her heart.
"Mother, what nonsense are you spouting now?"
"What are you saying, you silly girl! I have some good news to tell you!"
Gan Tao forced a smile, but she didn't believe a word her mother said.
Since Dad passed away, when has there ever been any good news in the family? No news is good news!
Gan Tao's mother, however, failed to notice her daughter's perfunctory attitude. She grabbed Gan Tao's hand and said excitedly:
"People in the village have been saying that Ganli has made a fortune and has actually taken over Wanshunlou! Well, it's opening in the next few days, and they say they're short-staffed and need to recruit people from our village!"
However, there needs to be some kind of competition... But my daughter is very skillful; everyone in the surrounding area knows how capable she is. If you go, you're sure to pass!
Gan Tao was tempted when she heard that the restaurant was hiring.
The reason is simple: things have been really tough at home lately!
Since she lost her job at the embroidery shop, the family's only source of income has disappeared. But with so many people in the family waiting to be fed, she has been able to take on jobs washing clothes for others, earning just enough to feed the family a bowl of thin porridge.
With the wild vegetables we picked, we were barely able to fill our stomachs.
But this is not a long-term solution. When winter comes and the wild vegetables are gone, how will the family survive?
However, when she heard that the restaurant recruiting was Ganli... her expression instantly darkened, she turned her face away, and said coldly:
"I'm not going."
Gan Tao Niang was imagining the scene of her daughter receiving her monthly allowance and handing her a pile of gleaming silver coins when she suddenly heard these words, as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over her head!
She paused for a moment, then said anxiously:
"You're not going? Why aren't you going? Gan Li is earning so much money now, and she's hiring people from the village. It's obvious that if she doesn't want people to gossip, she'll earn a lot more money every month!"
Besides, in a restaurant, the most you'd do is clear the dishes or wash vegetables. Compared to the hard work of washing clothes for others, this money is practically free. Would you be stupid not to go?
She rattled off a whole bunch of things, but Gan Tao only asked her:
"Mother, have you forgotten what you said about the Gan family when you argued with Aunt Zhao? Why are you now rushing to beg them? You have no shame, but I feel embarrassed!"
Gan Tao Niang was taken aback by her daughter's words. Thinking of the scene she had had with Zhao Shi before, she felt a little embarrassed.
But her eyes darted around, and she immediately put on a wronged expression, grabbed Gan Tao's hand, and began to cry:
“Tao’er, isn’t Mother doing this for the sake of this family? Mother knows I was wrong before. I said those outrageous things and offended people.”
But now that our family is in such a state, what's the point of saving face? Your brothers are waiting to be fed, and Mother needs medical treatment. Are you really going to just watch us starve or die from illness?"
Gan Tao felt both helpless and saddened as she looked at her mother's behavior.
She was well aware of her family's current situation and knew that she needed a job with a stable income, but the thought of her mother's previous humiliations and slanders against the Gan family made her feel ashamed.
