Chapter 193 Let's pretend that opportunity never came.

【Oh no! How could this happen!】

Maria clutched her head, her chubby body thrashing about in the space like an out-of-control ball, causing the space itself to tremble three times.

The host was finally willing to complete the task, but it all fell apart at the last minute!

It wanted to complain a bit, but was afraid of discouraging Ganli from completing the task, so it only dared to pick on the weakest link:

I really don't understand. Is Gan Tao stupid? Knowing full well that her mother had bad intentions, why didn't she seize the opportunity?

Gan Li, however, remained much calmer, responding simply: "There are countless things in this world that are impossible to understand."

Although she said that, she seemed to understand Gan Tao's actions to some extent.

She stared at the pancake that Gan Tao had left on the table, her eyes filled with complex emotions, and a self-deprecating bitter smile flickered across her lips.

Some people are like that; they treat you badly, but they'll occasionally give you a little treat, making you want to love them but feel forced, wanting to cut ties but feeling it's not necessary yet...

Like chicken ribs, tasteless to eat, but a pity to throw away. So I can only deceive myself that the other person loves me, otherwise I simply can't live.

Maria tried to understand what Ganli was saying, but in the end she found... she couldn't understand a thing!

Isn't this just self-deception? Humans are so complex!

It gave up trying to understand and asked directly: "So, does that mean our mission is hopeless? Even in this situation, Gan Tao still can't abandon her mother who treats her like a tool!"

"That's not necessarily true." Gan Li smiled, her eyes filled with a certainty tinged with sarcasm: "She'll wake up when she realizes she's not loved at all."

...

Since that day, Gan Li never mentioned going to the capital again, and treated Gan Tao as usual, without complaint or disappointment. Everything was as calm as if nothing had happened.

But Gan Tao didn't feel relieved; instead, she became increasingly depressed—she knew she had let Gan Li down, and Gan Li must be utterly disappointed in her now.

By personally squandering this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, Gan Tao felt that she had betrayed the embroidery needle that had accompanied her for many years and had also let down her skills.

This guilt weighed on her like a heavy stone, making it hard to breathe, causing her to lose her appetite and sleep at night.

Even so, she dared not show the slightest sign of anything amiss, and could only numb herself with working day and night. During the day, she was so busy at the restaurant that her feet barely touched the ground, and when she got home at night, she didn't rest, but helped people with laundry until late at night.

After working at such a high intensity for several days, she finally couldn't take it anymore and fell ill.

It was lunchtime that day, and Gan Ji was bustling with people.

Suddenly, a white light flashed before her eyes, and she felt dizzy. When she came to her senses, she had already fallen to the ground, and scalding hot vegetable juice was spilled all over her.

She froze for a moment, then realized she had made a mistake. Ignoring her disheveled appearance, she hurriedly apologized to the customer beside her, "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry..."

Before she could finish speaking, the guest rudely interrupted her:

"Sorry? Luckily it didn't spill on us, otherwise do you think saying sorry a few times would be enough? Also, do you know how long we've been waiting for this food? What kind of work is this?"

The lobby on the first floor was packed with guests, and the commotion here immediately attracted everyone's attention, with onlookers whispering among themselves.

Gan Tao opened her mouth, but besides saying "I'm sorry," she didn't know what else to say. Shame and grievance welled up in her heart, and tears streamed down her face.

Just as she was at a loss, a hand grabbed her.

Ganli shielded her behind her, apologetic smile on her face, but her tone left no room for argument:

"I'm so sorry to have kept you all waiting for your meal. I'll have the kitchen make a new one right away, and today's meal is on me. I apologize for that."

Gan Quan immediately stepped forward to help clean up the mess on the ground.

In the end, nothing got on him, and the innkeeper even waived the bill for the meal. Feeling he had gotten a good deal, the customer didn't say anything more and sat down grumbling.

Ganli pulled Gantao towards the backyard.

Upon entering the room, the first thing to do was check on Gan Tao. The dish had just come out of the pot, and it would be terrible if she got burned.

Fortunately, it's already autumn, and the clothes I'm wearing aren't as thin as they were in summer. Apart from my fingers being burned a little, I'm fine.

Gan Li breathed a sigh of relief. She looked at the disheveled Gan Tao, said nothing, and simply took a clean set of clothes from the wardrobe for her.

"Let's change into some clean clothes first."

Gan Tao wanted to refuse, but then she thought she couldn't go to work in these dirty clothes, so she had no choice but to accept it reluctantly. After thanking him quietly, she went behind the screen to change her clothes.

Ganli sat at the table, poured herself a cup of tea, and said as she drank, "You should go back in a little while."

A commotion arose behind the screen—the sound of a chair overturning—followed by Gan Tao's panicked voice: "Shopkeeper, you don't want me anymore?"

It had only been half a day, and it wasn't even time to finish work yet. Asking her to go back at this hour, considering what had happened before, Gan Tao could only conclude that the shopkeeper must be completely disappointed in her and didn't want her to work here anymore.

After asking that question, she became even more afraid, afraid of hearing a positive answer.

Gan Li sensed the nervousness in Gan Tao's voice and couldn't help but sigh:

“You’ve been looking pale these past few days, with dark circles under your eyes. It’s obvious you haven’t been getting enough rest. This can easily lead to an accident. Didn’t you see that just now? Go back and rest for a couple of days. Come back when you’ve recovered.”

So it wasn't that they didn't want her—Gan Tao breathed a sigh of relief.

She originally wanted to say that she didn't need to rest, but thinking about what had just happened, she felt guilty for not only wasting a dish but also causing the innkeeper to lose a whole table of food. She dared not argue.
