Just as Gan Li had predicted, the Wu family quickly received the news and rushed over with their men.
A series of noisy footsteps and shouts broke the tranquility of the night in Yuxi Village.
The torchlight, approaching from afar, resembled a fiery dragon winding its way in, illuminating fierce and menacing faces.
Leading the group was Master Wu, whose face was ashen and eyes were bloodshot. Behind him were twenty or thirty burly servants, each carrying sticks, knives, and forks, looking fierce and menacing. It was clear that they were up to no good.
During this time, there was also a disheveled woman, supported by two maids, who was crying her heart out.
"My son! You died such a terrible death! I will make those who harmed you pay with their lives!"
The voice was shrill and piercing, and the resentment within it was chilling.
The Wu family's arrival is ill-intentioned!
Fortunately, the villagers were prepared. When they learned that the Wu family might come to cause trouble, they all went home and grabbed their tools, holding their hoes and sticks tightly.
The women, holding tools such as rolling pins and mallets, stood beside the men, their eyes resolute and their demeanor fearless.
Mr. Wu had actually seen the villagers gathered here from afar, but he had previously thought they were just there to watch the excitement.
Upon closer inspection and seeing their formation, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease.
But thinking of his tragically deceased son, he feigned composure and angrily said:
"Every wrong has its perpetrator, and every debt its debtor. I'm here today to find the bitch who killed my son, and it has nothing to do with anyone else! If you know what's good for you, get out of my way!"
“Mr. Wu, you’re wrong about that.”
Gan Li stepped forward, her tone calm: "Your son deserved to die! He attempted to take advantage of Gan Tao, but was killed by Gan Tao in self-defense. He brought it upon himself!"
Upon hearing this, the villagers chimed in, "Master Wu, you know perfectly well what kind of person your son is! If he hadn't done something so despicable, how could he have died?"
"Exactly, he deserved to die!"
"He caused two girls to hang themselves before, and now he's finally getting his comeuppance!"
"This isn't murder; it's clearly eliminating a scourge for the people!"
Old Master Wu gritted his teeth and shouted, "Bullshit! It was clearly that little bitch who seduced my son, demanded money from him, and then killed him! You're turning black into white; are you trying to protect the murderer?!"
Faced with Mr. Wu's anger, Gan Li remained calm and said:
"You're the one who's turning black into white! Who is Young Master Wu? Does anyone in the surrounding villages not know?"
He had no relation to Gan Tao, yet he barged into her house drunk. What else could this be but malicious intent?
Mr. Wu choked, but argued, "What do you mean we have no relation? Gan Tao is arranging a marriage between my son and has already accepted fifty taels of silver as a betrothal gift from my family. She is already my son's fiancée!"
"Even though we're not married yet, is it so strange for him to want to get closer to his fiancée? She changed her mind at the last minute and killed my son—murder for money—and you still want to defend her?"
"Arrange a marriage?" Gan Li sneered. "Anyone can talk the talk. Let me ask you, if it's a marriage arrangement, where's the marriage certificate? Where's the matchmaker?"
A marriage certificate? This only happened in the last couple of days, there's no marriage certificate here!
As for the matchmaker… Mr. Wu’s eyes lit up and he quickly said, “The matchmaker is Matchmaker Li!”
Gan Li found it increasingly amusing: "What kind of person is that matchmaker Li? Everyone in the surrounding villages knows her. What respectable family would ask her to be their matchmaker? Unless it's a family that sells their daughter."
Since it involved selling a daughter, it must have been done without her consent. So what's wrong with her defending herself?
“That’s right, what’s wrong with it?” Other villagers chimed in.
Master Wu was trembling with rage. He pointed at the sweet pear and said through gritted teeth:
"Who do you think you are to frame my son!"
Gan Li sneered, "What I am is none of your business. As for what your son is, everyone can see it clearly."
Gan Tao and Young Master Wu have already been taken to the authorities; everything will be judged fairly. If you dare to cause trouble now, we're not afraid, but I advise you to save your energy and hurry back to prepare for your funeral.”
Upon hearing this, Mr. Wu became even angrier! He looked at Gan Li with eyes that seemed to want to devour her whole.
The reason he gathered his men and rushed over as soon as he received the news was because he knew that what his son had done was not respectable and that if it went to the authorities, he would have no grounds for complaint.
That's why he rushed over, wanting to strike first. He didn't care about anything else; he just wanted to kill the man, which would be revenge for his son.
As for what happens next—since he's rich, buying a life is easy, right? He can just throw out a scapegoat and nobody can do anything about it.
But unexpectedly, after killing someone, they actually dared to turn themselves in.
The person has already been taken over by the government; he can't very well go to the government office to snatch the person away, can he?
His carefully laid plans were ruined, and Wu's father was furious. He could see clearly that this was all the woman's idea. The thought of not being able to avenge his son made him want to tear this woman to pieces!
Wu's mother cried even harder, pointing at Gan Li and screaming:
"You vicious woman! Accomplice! You helped the murderer harm my son, I'll make you wish you were dead!"
Gan Li ignored her cursing and just stared coldly at Master Wu.
How could Wu's father not be angry? However, looking at the villagers standing around him, a dark mass of them, he knew that he couldn't outmaneuver them today, so how could he dare to act recklessly?
"I won't let this go so easily! Someone will have to pay for my son's life!"
He glared at Gan Li, then turned to the servants behind him and said, "Let's go!"
The Wu family came in full force, but left in disgrace. The villagers, seeing this, cheered and celebrated their victory.
The village chief also breathed a sigh of relief. He looked at Gan Li and said with lingering fear:
"It's a good thing you made the quick decision to send Gan Tao'er away, otherwise who knows what kind of trouble would have happened tonight."
He knew in his heart that the reason why Wu's father left like this was not only because of their tough attitude, but more so because he knew that Gan Tao was no longer there, and that making a fuss would be useless.
If Gan Tao were here, with the murderer of his son right in front of him, Wu's father would never have let it go so easily.
If a conflict breaks out between the two sides, the situation could become even more complicated due to the anger and frustration.
The village chief watched Wu's father and the others leave, letting out a slight sigh of relief, but then frowned and said worriedly:
"But it seems like Mr. Wu won't let this go so easily..."
Of course, she wouldn't let it go like that, Ganli knew that, but she had no other choice.
Since she had already decided to get involved in Gan Tao's affairs, she might as well see it through to the end.
She would meet force with force and water with earth, and she would fight back no matter what tricks her father-in-law had up his sleeve!
