After leaving the pharmacy, Gan Li didn't rush home. Instead, she turned and went down a side street, leading Gan Mingyi through a maze of twists and turns to the town's market.
Today is not market day, and the market is deserted, with only a few stalls set up, and most of the goods are wilted vegetables and fruits.
The brother and sister walked through several rows of vegetable stalls and came to an open space. This place was usually used for buying and selling livestock, and although it was not market day, there were still a few livestock dealers idly guarding their cattle, sheep and piglets.
As soon as they saw guests arrive, the livestock dealers immediately perked up and enthusiastically surrounded them.
"Oh, what would you two like to order? How about some piglets? They've just been weaned and are quite robust!"
"Go away, go away! Your piglets look skinny, nothing like my sheep! Look at these sheep, sir, they're plump and strong, with glossy coats. When they grow up, the meat will be delicious, and they'll even produce milk. What a bargain!"
"My pig is skinny? Your sheep are as skinny as monkeys, how dare you say that to me?"
Before the two of them could speak, several vendors over there had already started arguing over who would get more business.
Gan Mingyi was startled by the commotion, and fearing that his younger sister might get hurt in the scuffle, he quickly stepped forward to shield Gan Li while turning back to ask in a low voice, "Little sister, what are we doing here?"
Ganli peeked out from behind him, squinting as she carefully examined the livestock in front of her.
Upon hearing Gan Mingyi's question, she answered without hesitation, "I want to buy a cow or a sheep."
"Buy cattle? Buy sheep? What would you do with those things?" Gan Mingyi was even more puzzled.
As Ganli continued searching for a target among the livestock, she casually remarked, "Milk production, huh? Didn't I say we're launching a 'new product' tomorrow? We'll need cow's or goat's milk."
"That stuff's milk? It's so fishy and pungent, it doesn't taste good at all!" Gan Mingyi said with a look of disgust, while also being very worried: "Little sister, if you use that stuff to make new dishes, I'm afraid that not only will we not be able to raise prices, but all our old customers will also leave."
Seeing his worried expression, Gan Li replied perfunctorily, "I have a way to remove the fishy smell, don't worry."
She had already decided that she would use milk in the new food.
However, she never even considered using the milk of these animals—not to mention that there was no modern sterilization technology in ancient times and the hygiene conditions were worrying, she simply couldn't stand the indescribable smell.
However, if she doesn't buy an animal that can produce milk, how will she use the milk in her supermarket?
You can't exactly explain to people that the milk just appeared out of thin air, can you?
If others knew she could conjure milk out of thin air, she would truly become a "fairy," and who knows if they would worship her then? The chances of her being burned alive are probably much greater!
Therefore, she had already planned to buy a cow or sheep so she could easily get the milk from the supermarket. As for how to remove the fishy smell... she just needed to say it was a secret, and she believed her family wouldn't ask any more questions.
She had been selling popsicles at her stall for five days, and in those five days, she had saved up some money, enough to buy a cow or a sheep.
Ganli finally settled her gaze on a robust cow. The cow had glossy coat and gentle eyes; it was clearly a good cow.
"How much for this cow?" Gan Li asked, pointing to the cow.
The cattle dealers who had been arguing just moments before stopped when she asked a question. The dealer immediately put on a smiling face and began to give a long and detailed introduction.
"Young lady, you have a good eye! This is a strong, mature cow with a high milk yield and a gentle temperament. It would be perfect for pulling a cart or doing other work!"
Ganli had no interest in listening to his boasting and asked directly, "Just tell me how much it costs!"
"Hehe, young lady, you're a straightforward person. I won't beat around the bush with you. This cow, one price, ten taels of silver!" The cow dealer stretched out a hand and said with a smile.
"Ten taels? Why don't you just rob us?!" Gan Mingyi was furious. This cattle dealer was too ruthless; he was clearly trying to rip them off!
Gan Li remained calm and simply smiled faintly: "Boss, your price is way too inflated! This cow looks good, but it's quite old, and its milk production might not be as high as you say. For ten taels of silver, I could buy two calves!"
"Oh dear, young lady, you can't say that. My ox is..."
"Seven taels of silver, no bargaining. If you don't sell, I'll go look elsewhere." Gan Li interrupted him impatiently, making a move to leave.
"Hey! Don't go! Seven taels it is, young lady, you have a good eye, this ox is yours!"
When the cattle dealer saw that the cooked duck was about to fly away, he quickly grabbed Ganli, afraid that she would really leave. He cursed himself for not checking the almanac before going out today, how could he have run into such a bargaining expert.
Gan Li didn't immediately take out her money. Her eyes darted around, and she said slowly, "You're so quick to agree? What if I feel like I'm losing out?"
The cattle dealer wore a bitter expression, inwardly groaning. This young girl, though seemingly young, was incredibly persistent. But outwardly, he had to smile and say:
"I really didn't ask for a price. Seven taels of silver for a cow is really not much!"
Gan Li didn't speak, her gaze fixed on the cart behind the cattle dealer, and she said with a smile:
"This cart looks pretty good too. Shopkeeper, you've already sold your oxen, so there's no use for this cart. Why don't you just give it to me as well?"
Upon hearing this, the cattle dealer nearly choked on his breath. This young girl was really opportunistic, unwilling to suffer any loss! He clutched his chest, his heart aching with heartache.
