Ganli spoke with such sincerity and emotion that tears streamed down her face like beads from a broken string, making anyone who saw her feel that she had suffered a tremendous injustice.
Looking at Chen Yaozu again, his eyes were shifty and he spoke haltingly. Faced with Gan Li's accusations, his face clearly showed his guilty conscience.
In comparison, the onlookers, unaware of the truth, naturally assumed that Gan Li was the victim in this farce, and began pointing fingers at Chen Yaozu, their words becoming increasingly offensive.
Hearing the surrounding chatter, Chen Yaozu's arrogant demeanor vanished instantly. He tried to defend himself, but stammered for a long time without being able to utter a single word. Finally, he simply pursed his lips and sat down on the ground to cry.
While crying, he secretly glanced at Ganli, hoping that she would be like before, immediately softening and comforting him whenever he cried.
However, this time Gan Li just looked at him coldly, without the slightest emotion on her face. Her two uncles stood aside with their arms crossed, watching him coldly, without any intention of persuading him.
And then there's Chen Pan'er. I used to bully her until she cried, and now she's standing by and watching me make a fool of myself!
Chen Yaozu had never suffered such humiliation before. He cried and wailed for a long time, but when he saw that Gan Li had no intention of comforting him, he felt ashamed and embarrassed!
Knowing that playing the victim wouldn't work, he suddenly jumped up and started acting like a rogue towards Gan Li: "I don't care! You're not allowed to set up a stall here! Do you hear me!"
Gan Li looked at his aggressive and unreasonable behavior and wanted to rush up and slap him twice more, but her current persona was that of a pitiful woman whose heart had been broken by her heartless son, and she couldn't easily 'break character'.
So she took a deep breath, suppressing her anger, and continued in a soft voice, "I know you think I'm embarrassing you by setting up a stall. But, I'm a woman, and I'm taking care of your sister. If I don't try to earn some money, will we starve?"
These words were so poignant that they evoked a sense of sympathy in many who heard them.
Unfortunately, Chen Yaozu didn't understand. He was too lazy to listen to what she was saying and only listened to what he liked.
Upon hearing the word "shameful," he flew into a rage, jumping up and down and cursing:
"You know it's shameful, yet you still do it? You're doing it on purpose! I'm telling you, I don't care! You can eat whatever you want, but you're not allowed to set up a stall here! Get out of here right now!"
Chen Yaozu's words thoroughly enraged the onlookers.
Even outsiders felt sorry for Ganli after hearing her words, but her own son only cared about his own face! Now that he was being so unreasonable, everyone was filled with righteous indignation.
"You brat, Manager Gan is still your mother, how can you talk to her like that?" A burly man stepped forward and pointed at Chen Yaozu's nose, cursing.
"That's right, your father got together with a widow and kicked her out. As her son, you not only didn't protect your mother, but you also came to cause trouble? Don't you have any conscience?" another aunt chimed in.
"What an unfilial son! You ingrate!"
"You...you..." Chen Yaozu's face turned red, and he wanted to refute, but he couldn't say a word.
"What do you mean, 'we'? Did we say something wrong?" The man who had spoken earlier rolled up his sleeves, ready to teach him a lesson, when he saw that the man still wanted to argue.
"An unfilial son like you deserves to be taught a lesson!"
"Hit him! Hit him!"
Chen Yaozu had never seen anything like this before. He dared to be defiant towards his mother because he had been spoiled since childhood. But he knew that these outsiders wouldn't tolerate him!
Seeing the crowd's outrage, he turned pale with fright and retreated repeatedly, not daring to utter another harsh word. Taking advantage of the crowd's inattention, he turned and ran away.
Chen Yaozu, that bastard, ran faster than a rabbit. Gan Li had to maintain her weak persona for the time being and couldn't chase after him. She could only watch helplessly as he disappeared into the crowd.
She wiped away non-existent tears from her face, inwardly cursing, "You little brat, you're fast enough to run away. Don't let me catch you next time!"
However, she didn't come away empty-handed today. At least after this battle, the bad reputation left by the original owner's misdeeds has been mostly washed away.
And with today's events spreading like wildfire, it's estimated that the reputations of Aunt Zhao, whom Chen Danian and Chen Yaozu have been longing for, will soon be utterly ruined.
Thinking of this, Ganli's mood improved again, and even looking at the mess in front of her didn't feel so bad.
The ingredients for making taro balls were knocked over by that brat, so they can't be made now. In this sweltering heat, everyone has been waiting here for this one bite, and now that all this good stuff has been wasted, they curse the brat while feeling very sorry for him.
"Oh, what a waste of these ingredients, they're all good stuff..."
Some people complained, "I queued for ages in this sweltering heat, and now there's nothing left!"
"There seem to be some popsicles left, so we can only eat popsicles."
Upon hearing this, Gan Li had a sudden inspiration and said to everyone:
"Dear neighbors, thank you all for speaking up for me today. I am extremely grateful! Since I can't do business today anyway, I won't sell these remaining popsicles. Consider them a small token of my appreciation, and I hope you won't mind!"
After saying that, he called Gan Tian and the Gan brothers to distribute the remaining popsicles to everyone.
Gan Tian was in a very good mood at the moment, and she did whatever her mother said.
Although the Gan brothers felt a little sorry for their sister, they thought that she must have her reasons for doing this, so they had no objections and hurriedly went forward to help distribute popsicles.
