After buying the meat, Gan Li urged Gan Mingyi to drive back home. The elderly couple from the Gan family were still waiting in Gan Li's small, dilapidated courtyard. When they saw that their children had returned, they busied themselves serving tea and water while asking about the day's stall business.
When he heard that Chen Danian actually had the nerve to go to the stall and interrogate his daughter, demanding she hand over the secret recipe for making ice, Old Man Gan slammed his fist on the table in anger and roared:
“I haven’t even settled the score with him for making me a faithless person before, and he still has the nerve to come and ask Ali for the secret recipe? I think if we don’t teach this kid a lesson, he’ll really think our family is afraid of him!”
New and old grudges surged into his heart. Thinking of how Chen Danian had harmed them for so many years and made them suffer so much, and now that his daughter had come up with a way to make money, and he was still coveting it behind their backs, Old Man Gan couldn't sit still any longer. He called to his two sons and said they should go to town immediately to settle accounts with Chen Danian.
The Gan brothers had been itching for a fight for a long time, but they were busy with their stall. Now that their father had spoken, they both stood up excitedly, not even drinking water, wanting to rush to town to beat up Chen Danian.
Seeing this, Gan Li quickly blocked the doorway, preventing them from leaving. It wasn't that she didn't want to deal with Chen Danian, but she didn't want to drag her family into it while dealing with one scumbag.
However, she also knew that the Gan family had been harboring resentment for so many years and held deep grudges against Chen Danian. A few simple words might not be enough to stop them, so she said:
"Don't worry, I already have a way to deal with Chen Danian! And do you think it's only Chen Danian who's eyeing this formula? I think Master Zhao behind him is also very envious! Even the owner of Baifulai asked us about it today."
The Gan brothers were one thing, but Old Man Gan and Old Lady Gan knew nothing about Baifulai's affairs. Upon hearing her words, they quickly asked, "What does this have to do with the master?"
Gan Li then recounted the entire story of what happened after Chen Danian left today, and how they went to Baifulai.
When Old Man Gan learned that their feud with Bai Fulai was finally over, the last bit of resentment that had been weighing on his heart finally dissipated, and his expression relaxed considerably, as if he had instantly become several years younger.
However, regarding his employer's desire to invite him back as the head chef, he thought for a moment and then waved his hand:
"Well, this job is good, and the employer is kind, but so much has happened in between. Going back won't be the same as before, and it would be unpleasant."
Ganli wholeheartedly agreed: "Dad is right, that's what I meant too, and I still have things to ask you to do. Your skills are so good, we can't let them go to waste."
"What does this mean?" This question confused Old Man Gan. Then, he remembered that Gan Li had already given the secret recipe for the taro balls to the owner, and he became worried again: "You gave the recipe to the owner, so won't the stall lose a money-making recipe in the future?"
Ganli smiled and said, "That's exactly what I wanted to tell you. I was thinking that although sweet soup can make money, the weather is only hot for a few months. Once it gets cold, this business will not be able to continue. It's not a long-term solution."
"My daughter Ali is so bright!" Grandma Gan exclaimed, praising her first.
Old Man Gan nodded in agreement, his expression full of pride, clearly agreeing with what Old Lady Gan had said. However, he was quite puzzled by his daughter's new way of making money.
Thinking back to how she had just boasted about her cooking skills, while all he'd ever done in his life was cook...
"Could it be that you're thinking of opening a restaurant?"
"I'm afraid I don't have enough money to open a restaurant..." Gan Li awkwardly touched her money pouch, but then became confident again: "However, it's more than enough to open a small restaurant."
"A small restaurant?"
"It's a restaurant."
"Then what should we sell? Although our town is not small, we already have two restaurants, and there are quite a few eateries like the one you mentioned. Moreover, those that can gain a foothold in town all have their own unique features. If you don't have anything special that can retain customers, it will probably be difficult to make a living."
Old Gan shook his head.
He used to work as a cook at Baifulai, so he knew the business very well. He was being quite tactful with Ganli, but he felt that there were already enough restaurants and eateries in town, and without some skill, it was difficult to establish oneself.
Ganli smiled mysteriously and pointed to the oxcart in the distance: "So I bought these—this is the food I use to earn money!"
They had just returned and were eager to tell the elderly couple in the Gan family the good news, so they hadn't even had time to unload the things from the car yet.
Old Man Gan looked in the direction his daughter was pointing, but couldn't see clearly. He wanted to ask Gan Li, but she said it was a secret.
"I'll make it in a bit and you'll know once you try it. It's perfect timing, our family has finally resolved a major issue. Let's cook some good food today, invite my sister-in-law and the kids over, and have a proper family celebration."
Celebrating is fine, but...
"You're going to do it?" Old Man Gan asked in surprise.
After what had happened these past few days, Old Mrs. Gan had developed an unwavering confidence in her daughter. Upon hearing this, she patted her husband and scolded him playfully, "If our daughter says it's okay, then it's definitely okay! You're not allowed to contradict her!"
Old Man Gan realized what was happening and, fearing he might spoil his daughter's fun, happily agreed.
Grandma Gan then suggested, "Since you're inviting your sister-in-law and the others, why don't you come to our house to eat? This place is too small; it can't seat so many people."
That's true. Gan Li agreed, and the family prepared to leave, but Gan Li dawdled and told them to go first. Seeing her hesitant appearance, the Gan family thought she needed to relieve herself, so they didn't ask any further questions. They took the things they had bought that day, pulled Gan Tian along, and went out the door first.
