Chapter 65 Returning the Money

Gan Mingyi stormed in, plopped down on the table.

Upon seeing him, everyone realized that Sun's howling had stopped sometime earlier. Now, only Gan Mingyi had entered, and seeing that his face was also covered in scratches, everyone wisely refrained from asking any questions.

Gan Mingyi was too lazy to say anything more, so he picked up his own bowl and chopsticks and started eating.

When they tasted the braised pork and boiled pork slices, they were so surprised that they forgot about the unpleasantness from before and kept praising Ganli's cooking skills.

It was at this moment that he finally realized something was wrong and asked blankly, "W-what's going on? Why aren't you eating?"

Zhao looked displeased, Gan Mingli looked embarrassed, and the others remained silent.

Only Ganli seemed perfectly normal, greeting everyone with a beaming smile:

"Let's eat first. I already have a plan for what my sister-in-law just mentioned. We can discuss it together after dinner."

"What's the matter?" Gan Mingyi asked.

Ganli rolled her eyes at him and personally picked up a piece of braised pork and put it in his bowl: "Can't you shut up even with food?"

When Gan Mingyi saw that his younger sister was actually putting food on his plate, he completely forgot about asking anything else and said cheerfully:

"It's so good, so good, little sister, the meat you made is absolutely amazing, I want to eat more."

As he spoke, he picked up another piece of braised pork.

Seeing that he was eating like that, everyone quickly put aside what they were doing and started eating seriously.

With Gan Mingyi's mediation, the atmosphere improved somewhat, but Zhao was still preoccupied with the twenty taels of silver and felt uneasy.

In her heart, the secret recipe incident was originally caused by Gan Li. If it weren't for her, the employer wouldn't have asked them to pay compensation, and she wouldn't have had to go back to her parents' home to borrow money. Gan Li should be responsible for this compensation.

Moreover, she's currently running that business, which is said to be very successful, so twenty taels is just a drop in the ocean for her.

But it's different for them. Without Baifulai's job, how long would it take them to save up those twenty taels of silver? Not to mention she also needs to save money for her son's wedding and her daughter's dowry!

Thinking of this, Zhao became even more determined. No matter how her husband Gan Mingli tried to stop her, she would find a way to get Gan Li to take the twenty taels!

Zhao ate her meal with a heavy heart. After a long wait, the table was cleared, and everyone sat down around it again.

Gan Tian and Gan Qiao knew that the adults had something to talk about, so they took the initiative to tidy up in the kitchen. Gan Quan sat under the stove to help boil water. Sun Shi was still lying in the room, sulking. There were only the elderly Gan couple, Gan Mingli and his wife, Gan Li and Gan Mingyi.

As soon as the family sat down, Zhao thought of her earlier plan, glanced at everyone, and mustered up her courage to speak. But then Gan Li took the initiative to walk up to her and handed her a small bundle.

Startled by the disruption to her plans, she asked, "What is this?"

"Before we went to Baifulai last time, we pooled our money together. I remember my sister-in-law borrowed twenty taels of silver from her family, didn't she?"

Money is hard to earn these days. Lending to relatives is a favor, and we can't delay too long, can we? Here's twenty-five taels of silver. Would you like to count it? Gan Li said.

These words reached Zhao's ears, and she was so shocked that she could hardly understand what Gan Li was saying. She just stared blankly as she reached out to take the bundle. When she felt its heavy weight, she suddenly came to her senses and stammered:

"No, wasn't it supposed to be twenty taels? Why are you giving me twenty-five taels?"

Gan Li smiled and said, "Twenty taels is the money returned to our in-laws. As for the rest—our in-laws have helped us a lot over the years, so it wouldn't be right for you to go back empty-handed, sister-in-law."

Take out a tael or two and buy some things for your brothers and sisters-in-law, so they know our family remembers their kindness. As for the rest, sister-in-law has worked hard all these years; let my brother take you to town to buy yourself some things too.”

"This, this..." Zhao was stunned by her sister-in-law's extremely reasonable words. She felt dizzy and lightheaded, as if floating, and didn't know how to reply.

Gan Mingli, on the other hand, felt extremely sorry for his sister when he saw her take out so much silver at once.

"What silver are you going to give me? I'll find a way to pay back those twenty taels myself! Besides, there's no need to give so much. She has plenty of clothes; why would she need to buy any more?"

Ganli: "..."

She glared at her brother speechlessly, her eyes filled with threat—if you can't speak properly, just shut up! Are you afraid that their relationship as sisters-in-law will improve?

Upon hearing her husband's words, Zhao instantly fell back to earth, hurriedly hiding the silver behind her back. For the first time, she felt that this younger sister-in-law was actually quite pleasing to the eye.

She said apologetically, "My family has been urging me to pay this money back several times, so I need to pay it back as soon as possible... Then I won't stand on ceremony with you."

"Why are you being so polite with me, sister-in-law? This whole thing started because of me, so it's my job to sort it out."

Seeing her frank attitude, Zhao felt embarrassed when she thought about her own little thoughts. She wanted to say something more, but she couldn't bring herself to say it.

Gan Li, oblivious to her hesitant demeanor, took out another thirty taels of silver and placed them in front of the elderly Gan couple:

"My second uncle lent us thirty taels of silver before, so let's not keep him waiting. Please take it to him when you have time. I also have two catties of white sugar, take it with you."

Old Gan's lips trembled, and he felt a little uncomfortable, but he couldn't bring himself to refuse.
