Seeing this, Gan Li immediately lost her temper: "You clearly promised to help me report this, so why have you changed your mind now? Is this how your county government goes back on its word and plays tricks on the people?"
Seeing that she still dared to talk back, the officer became even angrier: "You country bumpkin, how dare you slander the government! If you don't leave, I'll arrest you and you'll behave yourself after a few days in jail!"
At this moment, the officer who had been more courteous earlier, upon hearing this, quickly gave Gan Li a meaningful look:
"Never mind, young lady, our adults may be busy and don't have time to see you. You should go now."
Although Ganli felt aggrieved, she knew the wisdom of not fighting a losing battle. Seeing that another officer was about to call for help, she quickly left.
But deep down, I felt more and more that my decision to offer the prescription was the right one. In those days, even a lowly official could keep ordinary people from acting recklessly.
If she didn't have any connections, even if her business were to succeed, it would probably be difficult to keep it.
She returned to the inn with a heavy heart. Gan Mingyi and Gan Tian had been thinking about her, but they didn't expect her to return so soon.
Seeing that she didn't look well, Gan Mingyi quickly asked, "Little sister, how is it? Didn't you see the magistrate?"
Gan Li shook her head and recounted her experience at the county government office.
Upon hearing this, Gan Mingli said indignantly:
"Are they out of their minds?! We came here to bring them good things, and instead of appreciating it, they're kicking us out!"
Gan Tian said worriedly, "Then wouldn't we have come all this way for nothing?"
Ganli was also puzzled, wondering where things had gone wrong. She rubbed her throbbing temples and said:
"Second brother, Tiantian, you two go next door to rest for a while. Let me be alone for a bit and think of another way."
Although Gan Mingyi and Gan Tian were worried, they knew that now was not the time to ask questions, so they obediently went back to the next room.
Gan Tian sat on the edge of the bed, her gaze fixed on the girl in black on the bed. But at this moment, she had no mood to think about the girl's identity; her mind was full of the matter of offering the prescription.
Now that trying to get an audience with the county magistrate through the government office is obviously not an option, what other methods are there?
She scratched her hair in frustration, but at that moment she heard a groan. Gan Li realized something and stared wide-eyed at the girl in black. Sure enough, the person who had just closed her eyes was slowly opening them!
"You're awake?" Gan Li asked in surprise as she leaned closer, startling the other person.
The girl in black sat up abruptly, the movement aggravating her wound. She gasped in pain but managed to hold back her cries.
She stared at Gan Li warily and asked coldly, "Who are you?"
He glanced around again: "Where am I?"
Gan Li quickly explained, "Miss, don't be afraid. We saw you collapsed by the roadside and kindly rescued you. However, we are also strangers in this place, and we can only stay at this inn for now."
The girl in black had already deduced from the room's furnishings that it was a guest room in an inn.
She turned her head again and carefully examined Ganli. She saw that Ganli was dressed simply, but her brows revealed a kind of intelligence and her eyes were open and honest. She did not seem to be the kind of person with ill intentions.
The girl in black's expression softened slightly.
Seeing this, Gan Li breathed a sigh of relief. Remembering her earlier encounter with the girl, and adhering to the principle that the more you know, the faster you die, she didn't ask further about her background, only saying:
"Young lady, I've come to the county town on business, and I probably won't be staying long. What are your plans for the future?"
The girl in black gave a bitter smile: "Plans? I... I don't have any plans."
Gan Li thought for a moment and said, "If you don't mind, I can lend you some money so you can hire a carriage to go home first?"
"Go home?" The girl in black seemed to have heard a funny joke, and said self-deprecatingly, "Do I even have a home anymore?"
These words seemed out of the blue, but Ganli nodded in agreement: "Indeed, not everyone has a home."
The girl in black was amused by Gan Li's reaction and laughed, but then slowly gave a bitter smile.
Seeing the puzzled look in her eyes, the girl in black suddenly felt a urge to confide in her:
"A few years ago, my father was seriously ill. My brother and I went to pray for him, but an accident happened and we were kidnapped by bad guys."
Later I learned that it was all planned by our half-brother. He wanted to inherit the family business but was worried that my younger brother would compete with him for it, so he orchestrated all of this.
The woman in black spoke with a tone filled with hatred:
“We were kidnapped to another country. My brother was killed by them on the way, and I barely escaped with my life! But now our enemy controls the family business and wields immense power. As a woman, even if I go back, how can I compete with him?”
When Ganli heard about her plight, she couldn't help but feel indignant. It wasn't that she was overflowing with sympathy, but rather that she thought of her own siblings from her past life.
Her parents weren't as capable as this girl's parents, and they didn't have much of a family fortune. But even so, her nominal older sister and younger brother had been competing with her since they were little!
Especially her pretentious, aloof father, who always complains about her being the only girl...
"What's wrong with women? Apart from missing a part, they're just as good as men in every other way!"
Gan Li couldn't help but say, "If I were you, I would definitely go back and take that enemy's power, so that he would live in the shadow of being defeated by a woman he looked down upon for the rest of his life!"
The more they look down on women, the more we must show them that we women are not to be trifled with!
She spoke passionately, unaware of the strange glint in the black-clad girl's eyes upon hearing her words.
Yes, why should she accept her fate? What is there that she can't afford to lose?
She clenched her fists, her eyes unusually bright, as if burning with raging anger. The seed of hatred had taken root in her heart, sprouted, and blossomed into a flower called revenge.
She wanted revenge, not only for her brother, but also for herself!
Just then, a series of noisy footsteps came from outside the door. Gan Li was interrupted by the sound and wondered what was going on when she heard a loud bang as the door to her room was kicked open!
Gan Li suddenly stood up, only to see a group of officials rushing in with menacing expressions. She had just seen the leading official, who was the same one who had spoken rudely to her at the entrance of the county government office.
He pointed at Gan Li and shouted sternly, "It's her! Take her down!"
