Fengxian Academy is located on the east side of the town, backed by green mountains, in a quiet and secluded environment.
It wasn't the only school in town, but it was the most famous. It was said that Master Chen, who taught there, was extremely learned and had countless students. Even the son of the county magistrate was educated by him.
Because of this rumor, Fengxian Academy became the first choice for students' enlightenment, and many people were eager to get in.
In order to get Chen Yaozu into this school, the original owner of the body must have forced Old Man Gan to raise an unknown amount of silver to pull some strings and get Chen Yaozu in.
Gan Li and the others arrived at the school in an oxcart, only to find several horse-drawn carriages parked at the entrance, and students gradually leaving the school, as if it were time for school to end.
Seeing this, she became a little worried. The students had all left school, and the teachers had probably all gone to rest... Was anyone still in the school?
Since she was already there, she didn't want to make a wasted trip, so she told her two older brothers to wait at the door while she pulled Gan Tian out of the car and walked into the school.
Gan Tian is young. Although this is not her first time in this place, she used to bring her younger brother Chen Yaozu to school. This time, however, she came to school for herself.
It's probably because of her different state of mind that she felt differently. She was more nervous than ever before, but she couldn't let her mother down, so she forced herself to be calm, straightened her back, and obediently followed Ganli's side.
Ganli patted her hand to comfort her, ignoring the scrutinizing or disdainful looks from those around her, and walked inside without looking to the side.
However, they were stopped by the gatekeeper as soon as they reached the entrance.
He looked Ganli and Gantian up and down, vaguely recognizing them but unable to recall when he had seen them before, so he simply asked:
"Who are you? What are you doing at Fengxian School?"
Gan Li knew that gatekeepers in ancient times were equivalent to security guards in her era, so asking people who came and went was simply their duty. Therefore, she was not angry because of his unfriendly tone, and simply told him her purpose.
"Brother, I'd like to send my daughter to study here. I've come to inquire about the enrollment process."
"I see." The doorman's tone softened considerably. He was about to speak when he was interrupted by a sudden voice.
"What are you doing here?" a slightly gruff voice rang out, its tone full of malice and extremely grating.
Ganli found the tone familiar and turned to look. When she saw the man's obese body, she couldn't help but frown in disgust.
It's Chen Yaozu.
When I last saw him at the dock, his voice still had the childishness of a boy. Now, perhaps he has gone through puberty, and his voice is deep and rough.
Ganli didn't like him to begin with, and now that she heard his voice like this, she felt he had become even more lewd and she loathed him even more.
Chen Yaozu saw her expression, but he interpreted Gan Li's furrowed brows as worry.
What is she worried about? A thought flashed through his mind, and he immediately realized that she was probably worried that he would ignore her!
In his view, what could these two be here for? They must be here to apologize to him!
He looked at Gan Li, his fat face radiating obvious smugness. Before the two could speak, he let out a cold snort and said smugly:
"It seems you've finally figured it out. You realize that without a son, no one will take care of you in your old age, so you regret treating me like that before?"
With his protruding belly and upturned nose, Chen Yaozu looked just like a proud toad.
He glanced at Ganli sideways, his tone contemptuous: "Let me tell you, it's too late to regret it now! If you want me to forgive you, unless..."
He deliberately dragged out his words, wanting to see Gan Li panic and beg for mercy on the spot, which would be the best way to vent his anger!
Ganli looked at his ugly appearance and wished she could stomp him to death.
But she was also curious to see just how shameless he could be, so she asked with a forced smile, "Unless what?"
Chen Yaozu, chin in hand, said arrogantly, "Unless you give me all the money you've earned these past few days and make this good-for-nothing kowtow and admit his mistakes, I'll reluctantly consider forgiving you!"
Hearing this, Gan Tian's face turned red with anger. She was about to retort when Gan Li stopped her.
Ganli gently shook her head, signaling her to calm down.
"That's all?" Gan Li raised an eyebrow, her tone slightly amused.
Chen Yaozu was somewhat taken aback by her quick agreement, but then he realized that she must be afraid of him, which was why she agreed so soon!
Thinking of this, he became even more smug, puffing out his chest and saying:
“Last time you beat Grandma up like that, and now there’s a ton of chores to do! You get back here right now and get the chores done.”
However, you've already divorced my father. If you come back, I'm afraid Aunt Zhao will misunderstand. So be careful not to let anyone see you. Once you've finished your work, get out of here!
And that good-for-nothing, she dared to curse me last time! You better get rid of her right now. That old widower in town is offering twenty taels to find a new wife, so let her go and exchange her for money—”
"Shut up!"
Chen Yaozu was speaking with great enthusiasm, unaware that Gan Li's anger had already reached its peak after hearing these words.
She was too lazy to even scold him anymore. She rolled up her sleeves and was about to step forward, ready to let this kid experience what it meant to be flattened into a meat pie.
However, a sharp shout interrupted Chen Yaozu's words.
Ganli turned her head and saw a young man standing behind them.
The newcomer was dressed in a moon-white long robe, with handsome and gentle features. His dark hair was tied up with a wooden hairpin, which made him look even more elegant and refined, like a gentleman.
However, at this moment, his gentle face revealed a hint of sharpness due to his tightly furrowed brows. He looked at Chen Yaozu disapprovingly and rebuked him:
"Disrespectful to elders, spouting arrogant words, how can there be such a disobedient student as you in the school!"
Chen Yaozu was startled by the sudden sound. He looked up impatiently, about to unleash a torrent of curses, but upon recognizing the person, he stammered like a rooster being strangled:
"Master Fu, things are not as you see them..."
When Gan Li heard that Chen Yaozu was still trying to argue, she immediately snapped out of her daze.
Seeing that Chen Yaozu turned pale with fright upon seeing this person, looking as if he was about to cry, she guessed that this so-called Master Fu must have some influence in the school.
Given that, how could she possibly miss this opportunity?
She stepped forward, her face contorted with grief and on the verge of tears, and said:
"Yes, it's not as you see it, Mr. Fu. He was just a little unfilial to his own mother, a little vicious to his own sister, and a little greedy for money..."
But what did he do wrong? He's just inherently bad; he probably didn't mean to!
Chen Yaozu: "..."
Is his mother defending him? He feels like she's adding dirt to his grave.
Fu Xinian: "..."
Looking at Chen Yaozu's bewildered gaze, he wished he could shake his shoulders and tell him—don't doubt it, you're almost buried, completely covered.
