“It’s alright, it’s not too late,” Gan Li said.
Madam Sun rubbed her hands together: "Little sister, I've forgotten some of what you said yesterday... Why don't you tell me everything from beginning to end? If I learn it, I can help you tomorrow."
“Okay.” Gan Li nodded.
Sun had expected Ganli to make some excuses, but she was taken aback by his decisiveness.
Just as she was beginning to have doubts, Gan Li rubbed her shoulder in pain and said:
“I’m exhausted from doing so much work every day. It would be best if my second sister-in-law could help me out a little.”
So he just wanted to slack off!
Sun snorted coldly, utterly disgusted, but her suspicions were dispelled.
Ganli then began to explain the method to her, seemingly in great detail, but actually omitting the crucial parts!
But Sun didn't know that Ganli was so diligent in teaching her so carefully, listening to every word so as not to make a mistake.
Finally, he made sure he remembered everything Ganli said before he felt at ease.
Having gotten what she wanted, she was about to leave when Ganli called out to her, "Second sister-in-law, if you have nothing else to do, could you help me chop some firewood?"
Sun initially wanted to refuse, but the words stuck in her throat. She had come with such confidence, promising to help; if she said she didn't want to now, wouldn't that give her away?
Never mind!
She comforted herself: How much firewood can a bundle hold? It'll be chopped up in no time!
But when she entered the courtyard and saw the pile of firewood, she almost fainted on the spot—it wasn't a bundle of firewood; it was clearly a small mountain!
Sun was exhausted, swinging the axe until it was almost smoking, but she still couldn't finish chopping the pile of firewood. It wasn't until it was dark that Ganli finally let her go home, as if it were a favor.
She dragged her arms, feeling like they didn't belong to her anymore, and limped back to the old house. The next day, she simply used this as an excuse to stay in bed and not get up.
Once the house was completely quiet, she stealthily got up. Seeing that her family had all left, she made an excuse to send her son away, then lay back down on the kang (a heated brick bed), straining her ears to listen for any sounds from the doorway. She was filled with anticipation and excitement, jumping around like a rabbit with its tail between its legs.
Just as she was drifting off to sleep, there was finally some movement at the door.
Upon hearing the three long knocks followed by a short one, Mrs. Sun jumped up from the kang (a heated brick bed) and rushed to open the door without even putting on her shoes.
When she saw the person at the door, she excitedly exclaimed, "Da Nian!"
Chen Danian glared at her coldly, his face as black as the bottom of a pot.
