More than half an hour later, Jess finally finished his ritual and opened his eyes: "Thank you, my friend, for buying me a drink and for listening to my story."
"For all the things you've done for our nation, I should thank you." Ye Xingchen smiled and asked, "How did you die?"
“I am actually one of the Pope’s men, but I am not a full-time believer. My practices differ from those of some of the Pope’s higher-ups, and we have had several disagreements over matters of principle.” Jess shook his head and said, “So…”
He stretched out his hand, making a gesture as if he were swinging a dagger downwards, and looked at Ye Xingchen: "Do you understand?"
"Hmm, I understand. You were murdered by your own colleagues?" Ye Xingchen nodded slowly.
“Yes, that’s right, I was murdered by my colleagues.” Jess nodded. “Otherwise, I should have a place among the Popes.”
"Since you are one of the Pope's men, do you know someone?" Ye Xingchen's heart stirred.
“The era I lived in is very far from now.” Jess shook his head. “Many people are gone, but some of them who are protected by God may live a very long time. Ask away, but I may not really know.”
“Augustus, an exceptionally powerful missionary, and they once carried out a special plan,” Ye Xingchen asked tentatively.
The Augustus he mentioned was the person in Jiu Li and Weina's organization who was killed by the Pope's men because his beliefs conflicted with the Pope's.
Ye Xingchen's question was also a probing one. He just wanted to know if Jess knew this person. If he did, then this guy was at least over a hundred years old. And what kind of plan did he want to carry out?
“Augustus?” Jess fell into deep thought. This name had been in his memory for a very long time, so long that it had almost faded into oblivion.
"Yes, you know him?" Ye Xingchen saw his strange expression and immediately guessed that Jess really knew Augustus.
If Jess recognizes him, then the true identities of Jiu Li and Weina might be revealed.
“I know him, of course I know him.” Jess chuckled a few times and said, “I remember now, an old man, he held a special position within the Pope, but… he died before me.”
"Oh, then we're not talking about the same person." Ye Xingchen was slightly taken aback, his expression somewhat disappointed.
Those who died in that era have been dead for at least a hundred years.
“If the Augustus you’re talking about is one of the Pope’s men, then I think you’re referring to the same person.” Jess unexpectedly threw out another question, which left Ye Xingchen puzzled.
"Why? Wasn't he already dead in your time? If he was already dead in that time, why do you say that the person I'm asking about is the same person you know?"
“Heh, as I said, Augustus held a very special position within the Pope, the position of prophet,” Jess said. “Under certain circumstances, he could receive divine revelation.”
"So he could foresee some things in advance. Augustus was more of a title than a name."
Jess explained, "After he dies, he will pass on everything he has, including his memories and the instructions of the gods. The next Augustus will take over his position and replace everything he has."
"I see." Ye Xingchen suddenly realized, "Then Augustus must know you."
“I know him, but he must have done a lot more while I was away,” Jess murmured. “Because he is a prophet, a forerunner, a guide sent by God to the world, the things he does are hard for ordinary people to understand.”
"What a coincidence. I have some things I'd like to ask you." Ye Xingchen asked thoughtfully, "Before you were assassinated, was he doing anything?"
“Him?” Jess paused, lost in deep thought, then shook his head and said, “I need to know the gist of what you’re talking about, because before I was murdered, he was preaching everywhere and did quite a lot. I don’t know which one you’re specifically referring to.”
"For example... divine status, allowing the divine status of a deceased god to descend upon mortals, and then granting these people special abilities?" Ye Xingchen observed Jess's expression.
Jess looked puzzled. He lowered his head and pondered deeply. After a moment, he suddenly realized something and said, "Oh, I know about what you're talking about. I've heard Augustus tell me about it too."
"What exactly happened? Can you tell me?" Ye Xingchen asked, his eyes filled with urgency.
Jiu Li and Weina's backgrounds are really too bizarre, and they have no idea what happened to them.
Ye Xingchen knew that this feeling was painful and confusing, so he wanted to help them figure out what had happened to them.
At least let them know who they are, where they come from, and where they are going.
"Heh, things are complicated once you start talking about them." Jess chuckled, lost in thought. "These stories begin with the fall of some ancient gods, back when..."
"Um, Jess, let's talk about some important points, okay?" Ye Xingchen said, both amused and exasperated.
He felt that this international friend in front of him had a tendency to be a chatterbox. If this guy really started rambling, Ye Xingchen didn't know how long he could go on.
The fall of the ancient gods? If it really started from that time, then it would be better to just kill Ye Xingchen. His time here is limited, and the domain could disappear at any time, so Jess doesn't have much time left.
This guy hasn't had anyone to chat with in so long, so if he's allowed to keep talking like this without any restraint, he'll probably start talking about everything from the beginning of time.
“Okay, okay, these things happened so long ago, it would be too long to start from the beginning.” Jess seemed to notice the problem as well, and he nodded and said, “Alright, let’s start with the briefest part.”
"To be precise, the gods are not immortal. They can transcend time and space and have extremely long lifespans, but their bodies will inevitably age," Jess said. "We humans view the gods as ants view us humans."
"Our human lifespan is far, far longer than that of ants, and ants see us humans as omnipotent."
"But in fact, we ordinary humans age, we are born, grow old, get sick and die, and so do gods."
