In front of the detention center, Sun Xiaohui helped Gu Yueji wait for Qian Mingjun and Gu Jiahui to inquire about the procedures for seeing Ren Jin.
Gu Yueji is over eight months pregnant. Normally, her back would hurt if she stood for a while, but now she has been standing at the door for more than half an hour and is still not moving.
Seeing Gu Yueji supporting her waist with one hand, her lips chapped from worry, Sun Xiaohui wanted to help her to a chair to sit down. "Sister Yueji, Jia Hui and the others probably won't be out for a while. Why don't you sit over there? I'll go buy you a bottle of water."
Gu Yueji didn't even glance at it, waving her hand, "No need, I'm not sitting and I'm not thirsty."
The detention center gates were tightly closed, giving off a serious and oppressive feeling. Gu Yueji stared intently at them, her mood growing increasingly heavy.
She has always been law-abiding, never taking shortcuts in her online store, never engaging in shady practices or tax evasion, always waiting for the green light when crossing the street, and always wearing a helmet and not riding against traffic when riding an electric bike, because she would feel nervous whenever she saw a police officer, as she was instinctively afraid of all public security, procuratorate, and judicial departments with punitive functions.
She was extremely anxious. How much responsibility did Ren Jin bear for Xu Wangde's death? How could she save Ren Jin? She didn't even know how she could get through this door to see Ren Jin.
Finally, Qian Mingjun and the others came out, and Gu Yueji hurriedly went to greet them, "How did it go? Can you go in to see Ren Jin?"
Qian Mingjun hurried over and said to Gu Yueji, "Only one family member is allowed to go in. Sister-in-law, you can only go in to see my brother by yourself, and you can only see him for ten minutes."
Upon hearing that she could see Ren Jin, Gu Yueji didn't care about anything else. "Okay, okay, I'll go in. I'll go in now."
When Gu Yueji walked into the detention center alone, the atmosphere inside was quiet and tense. Police officers in uniform could be seen everywhere, and there were cameras overhead. Everyone's words and actions were strictly monitored.
Upon entering the visitation area, the atmosphere became even more somber and serious. Visitors lined up at the entrance, passed through security checks one by one, and were then guided to their designated visitation rooms.
The room was simply furnished, with four walls, an iron door on each of the front and back walls, and a table and two chairs in the middle.
After Gu Yueji sat down in the room, she felt that time was passing particularly slowly, and every moment was filled with oppression and unease.
With a 'bang', the iron gate in front was suddenly pulled open.
Gu Yueji trembled and looked up to see Ren Jin walking in from a dimly lit room.
He was still wearing the clothes he had worn that morning, and his face was still the same. Nothing had changed, but in just a few hours, he was locked up in a detention center.
The moment their eyes met, Gu Yueji's tears streamed down her face.
"Husband..." Gu Yueji called out, her voice choked with sobs.
When Ren Jin saw Gu Yueji's tearful face, his heart ached. He quickly sat down opposite her and took her hand, saying, "Wife, don't cry."
Gu Yueji couldn't hold back any longer. She grabbed Ren Jin's hands with both of hers, rubbing her face against his hands while crying out, "Husband, why is this happening? I'm scared..."
She had never been so scared before. She used to shoulder everything on her own, but ever since they met and got married, Ren Jin had always protected and helped her. She didn't know when she started to depend on him. Ren Jin had become the sky supporting her. Now that the sky was about to collapse, she really didn't know what to do.
Her voice was so fearful and heartbroken that Ren Jin lowered his head, his lips touching Gu Yueji's hair, and his eyes also welled up with tears.
He had been lonely for so long, worked so hard, and finally had a happy and fulfilling home with Gu Yueji. They were about to welcome their child. This sudden calamity meant that if he had to go to jail, he might not be able to be by Gu Yueji's side when their child was born.
A sense of sadness enveloped the couple, and the only sound in the room was Gu Yueji's intermittent sobs.
But Ren Jin quickly calmed down; the visiting time was limited, and they couldn't waste it like that.
He cupped Gu Yueji's face in his hands and gently wiped away her tears. "Wife, we don't have much time. Please calm down and listen to me, okay?"
Gu Yueji understood that now was not the time to cry. She took a deep breath to calm herself down. "What should I do now?"
Ren Jin had already thought it through: "If someone dies on the construction site, I can't avoid being sued. After you get out, find a good lawyer. Neither you nor I understand legal matters, so we can only rely on a lawyer."
"Okay, I'll go out and look for it."
“There will be many expenses coming up. We need money to hire a lawyer, money to work on the construction site, and the biggest expense is for Uncle Xu’s family. We need to prepare a sum of money to compensate Uncle Xu’s wife and son and try to win their forgiveness. The money in my construction site account is currently frozen, so we can only use our family’s savings now.”
Gu Yueji said without hesitation, "I've saved all the money you transferred to me before. We have money." She had always been hesitant to spend the money Ren Jin transferred to her, just in case.
Ren Jin wanted to ease the tension, so he deliberately praised her, "My wife is so virtuous. It seems like I'll have to hand over all my money to you for the rest of my life."
Gu Yueji was now caught in a dilemma, unsure whether to laugh or not, and could only mutter, "Don't tease me."
Ren Jin patted her hand reassuringly and continued, "I have a few bank cards in the bedside table. I've forgotten how much money is in them. Take them out and check them. All my passwords are our wedding anniversary."
"Okay, I still have money in my online store, I'll take it all out."
Ren Jin sighed inwardly. He didn't know how much money it would take to settle this matter. He and Gu Yueji had worked hard for so many years, and it was likely that it would drain them both of their savings. "If the savings aren't enough, I've already transferred all the properties under my name to yours. You'll have to sell the houses and shops to get the money. Don't worry, I'll try my best to buy them back for you in the future."
