"Mom, don't cook for me tonight, I have plans." Xiao Yao came to the kitchen to pour water and saw Liu Yan picking vegetables, only then realizing that she had forgotten to tell her that she was going out tonight.
Liu Yan stopped picking vegetables, looking unhappy. "Where are you going?" But as soon as she finished speaking, she remembered something and immediately smiled. "Going on a date with Xuyang?"
Xiao Yao took a sip of water and shook her head. "No, I'm going on a blind date."
Liu Yan was shocked. "What?! You're going on a blind date with whom?"
Xiao Yao promptly revealed Xiao Yao's identity, saying, "My brother introduced him to me; he said he's a tall, rich, and handsome guy."
Liu Yan paused for a second, then slapped Xiao Yao's arm. "Are you trying to kill me?! You're dating Xu Yang right now, and you're going on another blind date. What will Xu Yang think if he finds out?! You're not allowed to go!" Not satisfied with that, she slapped her twice more.
"Mom, it hurts!" Xiao Yao explained while dodging Liu Yan's attack, "Zhong Xuyang himself said he doesn't mind me going on blind dates with other people, so why are you angry?"
Liu Yan's eyes widened in surprise, and she gritted her teeth in anger, "You actually told Xuyang that you went on a blind date with someone else?! Are you out of your mind? How could you say something like that? With that attitude, do you think anyone would want to talk to you?!"
Seeing Liu Yan raise her hand to slap her, Xiao Yao immediately fled the kitchen. Only when she reached the bedroom door did she dare to turn back and shout at Liu Yan, "It's best if he doesn't want to, I don't want to! Don't ask about us anymore, there's no future for us!"
Xiao Yao had expected Liu Yan to be angry, but she didn't expect her to be so angry that she wouldn't even give her lunch. Xiao Yao wasn't home, so now only her and Xiao Guowei's bowls and chopsticks were set on the table.
Xiao Yao laughed in exasperation, pulled out a chair and sat down, asking Liu Yan, "Mom, who is your biological child?"
Liu Yan ate with relish, not even glancing at Xiao Yao. "I also want a son like Xuyang. What use is someone like you, my own flesh and blood?"
Xiao Yao rested her chin on her hand and asked the question that had been bothering her, "What kind of spell did Zhong Xuyang cast on you that makes you so sympathetic to him?"
Liu Yan thought her mother wouldn't be able to answer, but Liu Yan said calmly, "When it gets cold, she reminds me to keep warm. When she hears me cough, she specially goes to Tongxintang to make loquat syrup for me and brings it to my home. Unlike you, you're heartless. Even when I'm about to go to my coffin, you might still think I'm joking with you."
Xiao Yao was taken aback and asked in surprise, "Zhong Xuyang came to our house? When did that happen?! How come I didn't know?!"
Liu Yan finally looked up at Xiao Yao and said, "You stay in your room all day, never sleeping at night and never getting up during the day. What do you know? Xu Yang is so polite and considerate. He was even worried that you would feel awkward if he came in, so he just left the loquat syrup at your door and left. Tell me, Xu Yang is impeccable in both appearance and character. If you don't want a man like that, what kind of man do you want?"
Xiao Yao was stunned for a long time. She knew nothing about any of this. Zhong Xuyang texted her every day, but she had never heard him mention it.
"How do you know he's a good person? You've only known him for a short time," Xiao Yao disagreed with Liu Yan.
Liu Yan retorted, "How do you know he's a bad person? How long have you known him?"
Xiao Yao opened her mouth as if to shout that she had known Zhong Xuyang for over ten years and that they had dated for a year.
Fortunately, she regained her senses in time and could only explain, "My brother has already made an appointment for me tonight. The other party is his friend, who is investing in a business with him. The conditions are very good in all aspects, and I want to go and meet him."
Seeing that Xiao Yao still insisted on going, Liu Yan sighed, "You really don't like Xu Yang?"
Xiao Yao was taken aback. No one had ever asked her this question so seriously before, not even Zhong Xuyang.
Seeing Xiao Yao's silence, Liu Yan assumed that she had been pressuring her too much lately, and that Xiao Yao was afraid to tell her the truth. She understood that feelings couldn't be forced. "If you want to go, then go. If you really don't like it, then tell Xu Yang clearly. You're playing with other people's feelings like this. It's not good for you if word gets out. I'll also talk to your Aunt Chen about it."
Xiao Yao was stunned for a moment, then replied in a low voice, "I know, Mom. I will explain it to Zhong Xuyang."
——
On her way to the blind date that evening, Xiao Yao was somewhat absent-minded, her mind filled with her mother Liu Yan's question: "Do you really not like Xu Yang?"
To be honest, even at this moment she couldn't give a definite answer as to whether her mother disliked it.
That's why she chose to distance herself from Zhong Xuyang and meet new people. Isn't it said that time and a new love are the best ways to forget an ex?
Opening Zhong Xuyang's WeChat, the chat window showed several white bars interspersed with a green bar. Lately, Zhong Xuyang had been frequently sending her WeChat messages, often four or five at a time. She would reply once or not at all; if she did reply, he would immediately send four or five more.
She wasn't giving Zhong Xuyang the silent treatment, and she didn't like it, but she genuinely didn't know how to respond to his enthusiasm.
She typed and deleted in the WeChat chat box, pondering how to explain things to Zhong Xuyang, but she still couldn't come up with a good answer even when she arrived at the blind date location.
As Xiao Yao entered the restaurant, she realized that Xiao Yao hadn't told her the other person's name or appearance. Just as she was about to call Xiao Yao, she saw someone waving at her, and she recognized the person.
Xiao Yao walked incredulously to Zhong Xuyang's table.
He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark jeans, and camel-colored Doc Martens, exuding a youthful vibe. Xiao Yao felt as if she were seeing him back in college.
What are you doing here?
Xiao Yao's first thought was that he knew she was here for a blind date and had secretly followed her, so her expression turned a little ugly.
However, he said, "I'm here for a blind date."
Xiao Yao's eyes widened upon hearing this.
