"What kind of infuriating attitude is this?" He strode over and grabbed her in a hug. "What do you mean? I've offended you and you're talking so rudely!"
Gu Yueji blinked innocently, "I'm just stating the facts. What kind of relationship do we have? Why would I tell you everything?"
Ren Jin gritted his teeth and asked her, "What kind of relationship do you think we have?"
Gu Yueji blurted out, "Isn't it just friends with benefits?"
Ren Jin was taken aback. Since they got back together, he thought their relationship had changed.
He looked down at her dangerously, "Is that how you define it?"
"Otherwise what? Did you say I was your girlfriend? Or that you were planning to marry me?"
Ren Jin was taken aback, then raised an eyebrow and smiled, "Are you trying to force me to marry you?"
Gu Yueji shook her head decisively, "I want to find someone with better conditions."
Ren Jin's gaze suddenly turned cold again. "What do you mean by 'better conditions'?"
Gu Yueji looked at him and said, "At least you're not delivering food or doing manual labor."
Ren Jin sneered, "You look down on me just because I deliver food?"
Gu Yueji's expression remained indifferent. "Don't be angry. I didn't look down on you. Neither of us has the right to look down on the other; it's just that neither of us has taken a liking to the other." She paused. "Have you ever thought about marrying me?"
Ren Jin looked at Gu Yueji, gritting his teeth, but couldn't utter a word of rebuttal.
He hadn't thought about it; in fact, he hadn't thought about it at all so far.
The two stared at each other silently for a moment. Gu Yueji pulled away from him and placed the bag beside him. "If you have everything you need, then leave. Let's not contact each other again after today. If we meet, let's pretend we're strangers."
Ren Jin glanced down at the bag that looked like a garbage bag, and chuckled, "Not even friends with benefits anymore?"
"I'm not young anymore, and I want to find someone to marry seriously."
He abruptly pulled her close, pinning her against the wall, and threw the bag on the ground. "Have you found another man? Or are you unhappy because I haven't slept with you for a month? Aren't you sick? How about we have a go right now?"
As he spoke, his hand reached inside her clothes, but Gu Yueji stopped him, saying, "It's only casual sex if it's consensual, what you're doing is rape."
He stared at her in disbelief. He didn't know what was wrong with her. They had been doing well since they met again, better than ever. Although there were still some things between them that hadn't been cleared up, they were getting along very well. He even thought they were developing a long-term relationship. How could she suddenly change her attitude like that?
He glared at her fiercely, "What's wrong with you!"
Gu Yueji stared at his brows and saw hurt and grievance in him. Was he not done playing yet? Was he upset because she suddenly ended the game?
“I’m serious. From now on, we don’t need to greet each other when we meet.” She broke free from him and opened the door. “You can leave the key here and go.”
Ren Jin stood there, panting, as if he were reliving the humiliation of being kicked out of his house as a child. He thought he would never experience it again, but Gu Yueji was the one who gave him that feeling.
He took out his keys, which were already in his keychain, and slowly removed them before finally slamming them onto the table.
He picked up the bag and walked up to her. "I'm asking you one last time, do you think I'm worthless just because I don't have money?"
Gu Yueji felt there was nothing more to say, so she nodded indifferently, "Yes."
Ren Jin slammed the door shut, the doorknob hitting the wall and breaking off a piece. "You'll regret this!"
From Gu Yueji's house to the first-floor stairwell, Ren Jin dragged and kicked the bag until it was smashed to pieces, not intending to keep it. But when he got to the trash can, he saw something even more infuriating.
The clothes and pants she bought for him, the pillow and slippers he was using the day before yesterday, were found in the trash can.
He kicked over the trash can, and cups, bowls, toothbrushes, and other items tumbled out—all things he had used at her house.
Ren Jin stared at the items and felt like a dog, a stray dog that she had taken in and then abandoned. He and the things he had used had nothing to hold him back, nothing to regret. She said she didn't want them, and she just threw them away!
A sudden pang of pain shot through my heart, a pain that felt like I had never been cherished by anyone in my entire life.
His eyes welled up with tears, so he quickly wiped them away and turned to leave.
——
Gu Yueji stayed up all night packing, and today she cleaned and organized her new home until dawn the next day.
I hadn't slept for two days and two nights. After washing up, I drew the curtains, covered myself with a quilt, and slept until dark.
When she opened her eyes again, the environment was pitch black, with only distant lights shining through the curtains, and the only sound was her own breathing.
Looking at the darkness before her, Gu Yueji recalled a saying: "Don't sleep in the evening, because when you wake up in the dark, the loneliness of that moment will engulf you."
She thought of Ren Jin, Ye Zurong, and her family. A tingling, stinging pain spread throughout her body; she could feel it clearly and was calmly enduring it. It was like the stomachache we get when we eat the wrong thing—a defense and self-healing process of the body. You know you'll get better; you just have to bear with it.
Tears silently slid down her cheeks. She didn't want to cry; she didn't even feel a lump in her throat. The tears just kept falling.
Before she realized she was about to sink deeper, she quickly got up, turned on all the lights in the room, washed up, and cooked noodles, acting as if nothing had happened. While eating the noodles, she opened her WeChat Wallet, checked every transaction in her balance, and then transferred all the remaining amount to her bank card, counting the balance in her bank card.
