Gu Yueji and Ren Jin had just returned to their seats after toasting everyone when Ren Yayong sat down at the same table with them. Whether he was drunk or doing it on purpose, Ren Yayong spoke in a loud and unrestrained manner, and everyone at the table could hear him clearly.
Gu Yueji and Ren Jin naturally heard this as well, and their expressions immediately turned ugly.
Ren Yayong, oblivious to the subtle nuances, presumptuously remarked, "If one woman can't have children, just find a few more. If a man is capable, why should he be afraid of not finding a woman to have children with?"
Anyone who heard this knew that Ren Yayong was speaking to Gu Yueji. Gu Yueji knew this too, but she didn't pay much attention to it. She just couldn't help but start thinking that she and Ren Jin both came from traditional rural families, and the people around them, including themselves, had deeply rooted traditional ideas. She really wanted a child and believed that a child was very important to a family. She believed that Ren Jin was not a progressive DINK (Double Income No Kids) advocate.
She instinctively touched her stomach. If she hadn't been pregnant with this baby, would she and Ren Jin have ended up together one day? Would Ren Jin also find other women to have children for him?
Just thinking about it made Gu Yueji's eyes well up with tears. She realized that she couldn't live without Ren Jin anymore. She just wanted to be with him for the rest of her life and didn't want him to have any other women. Just thinking about it was unbearable for her.
Ren Jin looked down at Gu Yueji and saw that she was looking down at her stomach with a lonely expression on her face, and even her eyes were red.
A stab to the heart.
The fact that she hadn't been able to conceive had already put a lot of pressure on Gu Yueji. She didn't dare to mention the child in front of her, nor did she want to. Now, Ren Yayong's words were undoubtedly like a stone being thrown into her heart.
Unable to contain his anger any longer, he slammed his wine glass down on the table with a bang, his face grim, and roared at Ren Yayong without any mercy, "If you don't want to eat this meal, get out! Nobody welcomes you!"
The scene fell silent instantly, and everyone turned to look.
Ren Yayong was shocked that Ren Jin was so rude to him in front of so many people. He couldn't stand it. "What? I can't even say a few words? I'm just thinking of you. You're 31 this year. In our village, all the 31-year-old men have kids in elementary school. Your wife can't have children, so you're not going to find someone else? If you stay with her, will you be childless for the rest of your life?"
Ren Jin reached out and grabbed Gu Yueji's hand. "It's none of your business what my wife looks like! Whether she has children or not, Gu Yueji is still my wife. I'll spend my life with her and there won't be any other women! If you say another word, don't blame me for kicking you out without hesitation!"
Gu Yueji looked up in surprise, her vision blurred, and choked out, "Husband..."
When Ren Jin saw the tears in Gu Yueji's eyes, he felt even more heartbroken. He hugged her and comforted her, "Don't cry. Don't pay attention to him. He's just talking nonsense. You know I've never been cared for since I was little, and they can't control me now either. I'll listen to you for the rest of my life. We'll be happy even without children."
Hearing his words, Gu Yueji couldn't help but cry in his arms. She knew that many people were watching in the private room, and it wasn't right, but she was just so moved. She just couldn't help it. She had only ever felt such unconditional love and care from Ren Jin in her entire life.
Whether it was due to the pregnancy or not, Gu Yueji cried uncontrollably and clung to Ren Jin, whimpering.
Ren Jin ignored the fact that there were other people at the birthday party, hugged her tightly, and patted her back gently to comfort her.
Gu Yueji cried for a while and felt a little embarrassed. She wiped away her tears and reached for the handbag next to her.
Ren Jin, with his long arms, took her bag first, asking, "What do you need?"
Gu Yueji lowered her head shyly, "I'm bringing you the birthday present I prepared."
Ren Jin was taken aback, realizing she was shy, but he found her attempts to distract herself quite adorable.
Gu Yueji took out a box she had prepared earlier from the bag and handed it to him, "I was going to give it to you later, but open it now and take a look."
Ren Jin was taken aback, recalling their conversation at the door that morning. "Is this the big gift you were talking about?"
"Okay, open it and see if you like it?" Gu Yueji urged.
Ren Jin, remembering the generous gift she had mentioned that morning, teased her, "Is it appropriate to open it here? So many people are watching."
Gu Yueji burst into laughter through her tears, suddenly eager to see his expression when he found out. "Look!"
Ren Jin first shook the box, trying to guess what it was, but there was no sound. He glanced at Gu Yueji suspiciously, wondering if she was playing a prank on him.
Gu Yueji stared at him with a smile, looking very expectant.
Ren Jin smiled and lifted the lid of the box, revealing a folded piece of paper.
He frowned in confusion, took out the paper and waved it at Gu Yueji, laughing, "I don't remember lottery tickets looking like this?"
Gu Yueji's eyebrows curved even deeper, and she pointed her chin at the paper in his hand, "Take a look at the words on the paper, and see if it's a prize bigger than winning the lottery?"
Ren Jin thought that Gu Yueji might really be joking with him. He was about to open the paper with a smile when suddenly he had a flash of inspiration and realized what was going on.
His smile froze, and without even opening the paper, he reached out and hugged Gu Yueji, asking in surprise, "Are you pregnant?"
Gu Yueji stared wide-eyed in surprise. This person hadn't even opened the paper to look at it. "How did you know?"
This rhetorical question was an indirect admission, and Ren Jin's eyes lit up instantly.
His heart pounded like fireworks, filled with excitement, joy, and awe, yet also disbelief. Looking down at her belly, he asked again to confirm.
"Are you really pregnant?"
Despite his doubts, the corners of his lips were already practically curling up to the sky, his face showing the surprise and excitement that Gu Yueji had been looking forward to seeing.
Gu Yueji smiled, took the medical report he hadn't had time to open, pointed to the results and said, "Yes, you're going to be a father."
