Chapter 76 Do you want a divorce?

Ren Jin no longer wanted to pretend to be polite and humble in front of He Mei and Gu Nianwang, and he didn't want to play the role of a good son-in-law.

He pulled out a cigarette from his pocket, casually lit it, and then provocatively blew smoke at He Mei and the others.

He Mei glared at Ren Jin, her finger trembling with anger as she pointed at him. She had been fierce and shrewish since childhood, and no one had ever dared to be as arrogant and rude to her as Ren Jin, whether in her own family or her husband's.

But when she craned her neck to look up at Ren Jin, she found that he was even taller than she had imagined, like a mountain. No one in their family could compare to him, not even Gu Jiahui or Gu Nianwang, let alone the others. He could lift Gu Yueji beside him as easily as lifting a chicken. If he got angry, they would have no way to fight back.

This realization made He Mei wary, and she dared not act as unruly and unreasonable towards Ren Jin as she did towards others.

Seeing the fear flash in He Mei's eyes, and her restraint in her words and actions, Ren Jin was secretly satisfied; this was exactly the effect he wanted.

He took another drag of his cigarette and said, "Last night in town, Gu Yueji took me and your son out to dinner. I thought Gu Jiahui looked quite strong and was well-suited for working on a construction site, so I'm planning to take him along to carry bricks."

He Mei suppressed her anger, "My son, a college student, going to a construction site to carry bricks with you? Are you kidding me?!"

Ren Jin sneered, "Don't look down on bricklayers. If you work hard, you can earn about the same as someone who cultivates dozens of acres of land in a year. Besides, your son earns two or three thousand a month in town. What can't you do better than that?"

He Mei's face flushed red upon hearing this.

She knew Gu Jiahui's salary was indeed not high, and that was precisely why she was so anxious about the dowry for the wedding.

"You don't care how much he earns. You're the one who has to do manual labor because you didn't graduate high school and have no education. Why should a college graduate like him do manual labor with you?"

Ren Jin didn't understand the point of He Mei constantly talking about college students; after all, college students were trapped in this small mountain village with no way out.

"Why should I? Because you don't have money to get your son married, and because you're trying to use my wife to get a dowry. If I don't do something, I'll lose my wife. I'll have to take your son out to work and earn money, so you can forget about using my wife to get a dowry."

“They are my children, I am their mother, and they must listen to me.”

“Gu Yueji is still my legally married wife. We are a legal couple, and I am her first in line to inherit her mantle.”

He Mei didn't understand anything about heirs either. "They are all adults. You can't just take them away as you please!"

Ren Jin nodded in agreement, "That's right, they are all adults. It's not like I can just take them away or you can just leave them behind."

He shut her down completely, and He Mei angrily supported her back and gasped for breath.

Seeing that He Mei was quite angry with him, Ren Jin finished his last puff of cigarette, threw it on the ground, and stomped it out. "Since your aunt and uncle don't welcome me, I won't stay any longer. I'll stay in town tonight and come back to pick them up another day."

He didn't say who he was picking up, nor how many people he was picking up, and then he pulled Gu Yueji and walked out.

Gu Yueji followed Ren Jin out of the house before asking, "Why are you moving out?"

"Give your mom a break. We can't keep scare her like this. A cornered dog will jump over a wall, and a desperate person will hang themselves." Ren Jin was holding his phone and booking a hotel online. He had originally planned to stay at Gu Yueji's house tonight, but he had already canceled the hotel reservation.

Gu Yueji thought about it and realized it made sense; his mother was really capable of anything when she was desperate.

"Okay, let's go to the hotel first."

She tried to pull him to the village entrance to wait for the bus, but he stopped her, saying, "You stay home tonight."

Gu Yueji was taken aback. "Why?"

Ren Jin glanced at her and teased her, half-jokingly, "Didn't you say you were going to get a divorce and remarry? What kind of talk is it to move out with me?"

Gu Yueji was stunned. "No, are you still angry? I'm not."

She had just rejected Sun Xiaoming so clearly that she assumed he had seen it all.

He changed the subject, saying, "Stay home tonight and brainwash your parents. Say I'm a gangster, a murderer or arsonist, whatever they're afraid of. That way they'll be afraid of me, and we'll have a chance to take your brother out."

"You should also discuss it with your brother beforehand. If he really wants to go out with us, you two siblings are responsible for reasoning with your mother. Tell her that it's easy to make money outside, and that you can make enough to get married and give her a grandson. Just say whatever you can to entice her. I'll be responsible for intimidating your mother and then we'll cut the Gordian knot. As soon as she agrees, we'll leave without giving her a chance to back out."

After coldly finishing his sentence, he left without looking back, not even saying goodbye.

Gu Yueji wanted to stop him and ask him what was wrong, but just then a neighbor came out of his house to greet her, so she could only watch Ren Jin walk further and further away.

When she got home, she wanted to go to her room to get her phone to call Ren Jin, but He Mei stopped her, saying, "Who exactly is Ren Jin! How do you know him?!"

Gu Yueji sighed, thinking about Ren Jin's words. She sat down in her chair and began to make up a story on the spot. "Once, I was robbed on the street. Ren Jin and his coworkers saw it while they were having a late-night snack by the roadside. They kindly helped me catch the robber and get my backpack back. However, he and his coworkers beat the robber quite badly, sending him to the hospital. Later, I found out that his coworkers at the construction site were all people he met in prison. When he couldn't find work after his release, he brought them with him to work on the construction site. So, although he didn't have much money, the people working with him on the construction site were all his brothers, and they listened to Ren Jin in everything."

Gu Yueji was surprised by her own ability to make up stories, but it terrified He Mei. "He's been to jail?"

Gu Yueji nodded without changing her expression, "Yes, he caused serious injury through negligence and was just released the year before last."

He Mei was stunned. "He seriously injured someone? And you still married him?! Did he ever hit you?"

She blinked, looking like she was head over heels in love. "A few times he slapped me when he was drunk, but he apologized to me when he sobered up. He's usually pretty good to me."

After Gu Yueji finished speaking, she lowered her head and stuck out her tongue. She couldn't help but feel guilty towards Ren Jin. He had never even raised his voice to her since they got married, let alone hit her. Yet she had completely ruined her reputation.

Gu Yueji had never lied to her since they were children, so He Mei believed her immediately. "You actually brought this kind of person home?! Are you trying to kill our whole family?"

"As long as you don't anger Ren Jin, he won't hit you."

Gu Yueji was kept on the hook by He Mei and Gu Nianwang for a long time, but she didn't dare to mention divorce and remarriage again. Instead, she was trying to figure out how to rescue Gu Jiahui from Ren Jin's clutches.

Gu Yueji didn't have time to go back to her room to call Ren Jin until after lunch.

No one answered the first call, so she immediately called a second time, which was answered just before she was about to hang up.

"Honey, what are you doing?"

"Go to sleep." His voice was muffled and flat.

Gu Yueji hesitated for a moment, wanting to ask him what was wrong, but finally murmured, "Then you should go to sleep."

But he added, "I wasn't asleep either; I was thinking about something."

What are you thinking about?

"Gu Yueji, do you want a divorce?"
