Ren Jin said casually, "Oh, if you had told me earlier, I wouldn't have eaten tofu pudding and pancakes, and I would have just come to your house for breakfast."
"How did you get here from so far away..." Gu Yueji suddenly realized halfway through her sentence, and vaguely heard a shout in her hometown dialect coming from the other end of the phone, "What did you have for breakfast?"
"The tofu pudding and pancakes you mentioned that were delicious and plentiful were indeed quite large, but I thought the taste was just so-so, not as good as what you usually cook..."
He kept rambling on and on, and Gu Yueji, losing patience, interrupted him, asking, "Where are you?"
Ren Jin looked around at the buildings and picked the most eye-catching sign to read aloud, "Liangguang Primary School".
Gu Yueji was stunned, and it took her several seconds to believe it. "You really came?"
Ren Jin was pleased with her shocked tone, but he wanted to see her shocked expression even more. "Send me your home location on WeChat, I'll drive to your house now."
Gu Yueji ran out of the room in a panic, shouting, "Don't come any closer!"
Ren Jin frowned. "Why?"
"Wait for me at Liangguang Elementary School. I'm coming to find you now."
Gu Yueji grabbed her phone and ran out of the house, ignoring He Mei's calls behind her.
After waiting for the bus and traveling, Gu Yueji arrived at Liangguang Primary School at almost 10:30.
From afar, she spotted the familiar black Land Rover parked by the roadside. Its tall and imposing appearance was particularly eye-catching on the country road, and people passing by would occasionally turn around to take a look.
The driver's side window rolled down, and a hand reached out, a burning cigarette between the fingers.
Gu Yueji looked at the hand and realized that she could recognize him from just one hand.
His fingers were long but with large knuckles, wheat-colored, and rough skin—not the slender, fair fingers that are the ideal in people's eyes. This large, warm hand could easily envelop her entire hand with a gentle clasp, and looking at it, it was as if she could already feel the warmth of his palm on her skin.
Gu Yueji walked to the passenger side and opened the car door. Ren Jin was stunned, his hand still on the car window, his gaze fixed on her.
He was wearing a black turtleneck sweater with a dark green jacket. He had broad shoulders, a straight back, and a mature, handsome appearance. His face looked slightly tired, but his eyes were bright and he was staring at her intently.
Gu Yueji felt a strange flutter in her heart.
After not seeing each other for several days, something seemed to have changed in their eyes.
Ren Jin took one last drag of his cigarette, stubbed it out, and started the car. "How do I get there?"
Gu Yueji took out her phone but said, "I found a hotel; I won't go back today."
Ren Jin raised an eyebrow, looked at her profile as she looked down at her phone, and praised her with a smile, "You're so thoughtful."
It's inconvenient to do some things when I'm home.
