"Brother, is this a good time? I need to talk to you about something."
Since Gu Yueji became pregnant, Ren Jin has focused more on taking care of her. Qian Mingjun tries to handle things at the construction site as much as possible without asking Ren Jin. So, he didn't tell Ren Jin about the theft at the construction site until he went to arrest Uncle Xu last night. He thought that Xu Wangde would just pay compensation and then he would fire him. However, Xu Wangde's attitude forced him to tell Ren Jin about it.
Ren Jin had just parked his car downstairs at Gu Jiahui's building and was about to go up to pick up Gu Yueji when he asked, "Is it convenient? Is there something going on at the construction site?"
So Qian Mingjun told Ren Jin everything about Xu Wangde.
Ren Jin sat in the car listening silently. He reached into his pocket for a cigarette, only to remember that he had quit smoking completely after Gu Yueji became pregnant.
"What is Uncle Xu's attitude now?" Ren Jin asked.
Qian Mingjun got angry just thinking about Xu Wangde's shameless face. "He just wants to stay here, thinking we can't do anything to him. Should we call the police?"
"Don't alarm the police yet. It's best to downplay this and make it a thing of the past." Ren Jin thought for a moment. "You don't need to tell Xu Wangde anything. Just say that I know about this and that I'll go see him tomorrow."
"Brother, what are you going to do?"
"What can we do? Get him out of here quickly. Xu Wangde is a menace if he stays here."
Ren Jin regretted it more and more. He shouldn't have been soft-hearted back then. He should have fired Xu Wangde when he violated the rules by not wearing a seat belt.
“He’s focused on getting money for his son’s wedding right now, so I’m afraid he won’t agree to leave so easily,” Qian Mingjun warned.
Ren Jin thought for a moment, then said, "Save the surveillance footage and the photos and videos of Xu Wangde at the scrap yard. I'll talk to him about it tomorrow."
"Okay, I understand."
Just as Ren Jin hung up the phone, Gu Yueji called, "Honey, are you still busy? Your phone is busy."
Ren Jin's face remained calm, but upon hearing Gu Yueji's voice, his tone softened, "I was just talking to Mingjun about something. We're downstairs now, we'll be right up."
However, Gu Yueji said incoherently, "Oh, if you're busy, then let's go home first. We won't eat at Jia Hui's place. Wait for me, I'll go downstairs now."
Ren Jin was taken aback, wondering if his wife had misheard him. Before he could ask any questions, He Mei's voice came from the other end of the phone, "No matter how busy you are, you still need to eat. If you're really that busy, wait for him to finish so he can come pick you up." Then the phone was hung up with a snap.
Ren Jin frowned, then got out of the car and went straight upstairs.
He stopped ringing the doorbell and just opened the door with his key. As soon as he came in, he called out, "Wife."
Gu Yueji and He Mei sat on the sofa in the living room, both looking unwell. They were both taken aback when Ren Jin opened the door and came in.
Although Ren Jin and Gu Yueji both had keys to the house, ever since Gu Jiahui and Sun Xiaohui moved in, they always rang the doorbell and never used their keys to open the door themselves.
So much so that when He Mei saw Ren enter, she asked in surprise, "Why do you have a key to this place?"
Ren Jin raised an eyebrow and retorted, "This house is mine, why can't I have a key to it?"
As he spoke, he tossed the keys onto the coffee table with a thud. He sat down next to Gu Yueji, took her hand, and asked loudly, "What's wrong? Can't I even go back to my own house to see my wife?"
These words were meant for He Mei to hear, and her expression indeed turned even uglier upon hearing them.
Gu Yueji gave Ren Jin a look and shook her head at him.
Ren Jin didn't understand and was about to ask what it meant.
He Mei had already started making things difficult, "Your wife? I was just about to ask you that, did you give a bride price when you married our Zhao Di? Did our parents agree to you marrying her?"
Ren Jin was taken aback, but then he understood what was going on.
He chuckled, patted Gu Yueji's hand to comfort her, and frankly admitted, "I didn't give it to her, but I've already married her."
Ren Jin's self-righteous attitude made He Mei angry, and she slammed her hand on the table. "How dare you say that! Let me tell you, our family will not give you our daughter for nothing. Today we must make things clear about the bride price."
Gu Yueji panicked upon hearing this. She hadn't wanted Ren Jin to come up because she didn't want He Mei to have a chance to ask Ren Jin for a dowry. She hadn't expected He Mei to snatch her phone and prevent her from going home.
"Mom, stop talking! We won't give any more money as a bride price!" She was determined not to give He Mei and her family any money.
He Mei turned her head and glared fiercely at Gu Yueji, "Shut up! It's not up to you to refuse to give us this money. We, as your parents, raised you and gave birth to you for so many years. If you don't appreciate our kindness, I'll consider you an ingrate. But as long as you get married, we will definitely get this money back."
Gu Yueji was stunned by He Mei's yelling. Since she was old enough to understand, she had been doing farm work and housework behind Gu Jiahui's back. She had never eaten or drunk anything for free at home. Even though she had resentment in her heart, she was now working hard to earn money with her younger brother. Just now, He Mei cooked dried radish for her and she was touched by the warmth of her family. However, when it came to money, she was an ingrate in her parents' eyes. Thinking of the grievances she had suffered at home over the years, her eyes reddened.
Seeing Gu Yueji on the verge of tears, Ren Jin couldn't bear it and quickly pulled her up and helped her to the single sofa next to him.
Seeing Gu Jiahui sitting on the sofa, she yelled even louder at him, "Get up! Are you blind? Can't you see your sister wants to sit down?!"
Ren Jin's angry voice echoed throughout the house, stunning everyone.
Gu Jiahui stood up blankly. After Ren Jin helped Gu Yueji sit down, he continued to say hurtful things to Gu Jiahui, "Your sister is an ingrate? I think you're the ingrate more. You're making money off your sister, living in my house, and now you're pretending to be mute here? What, did you call your mother over here just so she could give you money for your wedding?"
