Because of the tight construction schedule, the construction site is working in three shifts day and night, and Ren Jin has been living on the construction site and not going home recently.
Ren Jin lived a little better than the other workers, sleeping in a room by himself.
After taking a shower that night, he lay in bed feeling bored and started thinking about Gu Yueji. He hadn't been home for a week, and Gu Yueji had only come twice to bring him clothes and some soup. Each time she came during the day, and he hadn't held her while sleeping for a week.
I glanced at my phone and calculated that I could get back in time for bed. If all else fails, I can just leave earlier tomorrow morning.
The more I thought about it, the more restless I became. I sat up, wanting to change my clothes and go home, when suddenly there was a knock on the door.
"Boss, are you asleep?"
Ren Jin was taken aback. The construction site outside was making a rumbling noise, and he couldn't hear whose voice it was. While putting on his clothes, he asked, "Who is it?"
"I'm the boss, Xiao Hong."
Ren Jin didn't remember who Xiao Hong was either, and was stunned when he opened the door and looked inside.
A woman stood in front of his door, wearing a slip dress. Her breasts were faintly visible, her hair was half-dry and draped over her shoulders, and she smelled of perfume.
He never spoke a word to the other female workers on the construction site, but he seemed to vaguely remember that she was the girl who helped cook and served food in the canteen.
He fixed his gaze on the woman's face. "What is it?"
Xiao Hong asked shyly in a soft voice, "Boss, do you have any mosquito coils? There are too many mosquitoes in my area, and I can't sleep."
Ren Jin didn't think much of it. "Oh, yes, wait a minute." He then went back to his room to get mosquito coils.
However, as soon as he picked up the mosquito coil and turned around, he saw Xiao Hong enter his room and prepare to close the door.
Ren Jin then realized what was going on, and swiftly stepped forward to reopen the door.
"go out!"
Xiao Hong stood still, wanting to say something, but Ren Jin grabbed her arm and chased her out without saying a word, slamming the door shut.
Ren Jin was so angry that he was panting heavily in the room, supporting his back. He wasn't unaware that there were all sorts of messy relationships on construction sites. But he had strictly forbidden such things in his construction team. Apart from the previous incident, if even one family member came to the construction site to cause trouble, he would forget about doing the project. Moreover, the people he brought were all from his hometown, and he knew their wives and children to some extent. So every time before entering the construction site, he would emphasize one point: anyone who had an affair would be kicked out of the construction team.
He never expected that this would happen to him today. Although female workers would occasionally give him extra food or hot water, he never paid any attention. This was the first time someone had blatantly barged into his room.
My mind was in a mess, and I didn't know if anyone had seen me just now. My desire to go home and find Gu Yueji was completely ruined.
The next day, as expected, the scandal he had feared still broke out.
"Boss, I heard a woman went to your room last night, did she?" one of the construction crew members asked him ambiguously.
Ren Jin nodded frankly, "Oh, Xiao Hong from the cafeteria came to borrow mosquito coils, what's up?"
"Just borrowing mosquito coils? Someone said they saw her enter your room?"
"I went inside to get mosquito coils, and she was standing at the door when she saw the door was about to close in the wind, so she came in and pushed it shut. What? It was less than a minute, what kind of wild speculation could you possibly have?"
"There's a rumor among the female workers that Xiao Hong went to your room, and that you closed the door after she entered."
"Bullshit! Who said she should come out? If the door is to be closed, I'll change my surname to theirs. Stop spreading these baseless rumors all the time. You're ruining the girl's reputation, and if your sister-in-law hears this, she'll never forgive me." Ren Jin said this while having breakfast with everyone in the canteen, deliberately speaking loudly so that everyone could hear.
That evening, Gu Yueji, having not seen Ren Jin for several days, brought him a stewed soup and a fresh change of clothes.
Gu Yueji had been here several times, and the security guards recognized her and let her in directly.
Ren Jin's room was on the second floor. The washroom was right across the stairs from the top of the stairs. Several women who had just finished showering were washing clothes in front of the faucet in the washroom.
As Gu Yueji walked by, all their eyes fell on her.
"Look, this is the boss's wife. She's so beautiful. No wonder the boss doesn't like you."
"She's good at makeup, and I have a better figure."
Gu Yueji was taken aback, unsure whether they were deliberately letting her hear them or simply couldn't control their volume when they spoke.
Standing on the stairs, Gu Yueji looked back at them. Several female workers immediately turned their heads away after noticing Gu Yueji's gaze, except for one younger girl who looked at her without looking away.
Gu Yueji withdrew her gaze and continued walking upstairs. When she reached Ren Jin's door, she didn't knock but simply turned the lock, which was already locked.
Ren Jin's voice immediately came from inside the room, "Who is it? Don't you know how to knock?"
Gu Yueji obediently knocked on the door.
However, Ren Jin still didn't open the door. "Who are you? Knocking on the door and not answering, are you mute?"
Gu Yueji knocked on the door again. "You won't open the door unless I speak, is that it?"
No sooner had she finished speaking than the door was flung open, and Ren Jin stood in the room looking at her in surprise. "Why are you here?"
Gu Yueji was angry. "Should I turn around and go home?"
Ren Jin grinned and said, "What are you saying?" He quickly pulled her into the room.
As soon as he closed the door, he hugged her and tried to kiss her. Gu Yueji rested her hands on his chest and looked at him.
Ren Jin was taken aback. "What's wrong, wife?"
Gu Yueji put the clothes and thermos on the table, leaned against it, and asked him, "Why didn't you open the door just now?"
"We don't even know who it is, how can they just open the door to anyone?"
She remembered that on the previous times she came, his door was usually not locked unless he was resting or not in his room, because it was common for people to come looking for him at the construction site.
After thinking for a moment, they agreed to talk about it face to face, and asked frankly, "I overheard some female workers talking outside just now. Has something happened these past few days?"
Ren Jin was taken aback. He hadn't expected her to hear these things as soon as she arrived at the construction site. He had originally thought there was no need for her to know these fabricated stories.
With a sigh, he had no choice but to confess, "Last night a female worker came to borrow mosquito coils. She entered my room and was seen by someone, who then spread some nonsense."
Gu Yueji's gaze sharpened immediately. "You let her into your room?"
Her tone changed, and Ren Jin quickly explained, "I didn't let her in. I went back to my room to get mosquito coils, and when I turned around, I saw her come in by herself. I was startled too."
"Does that female worker have feelings for you?"
"I don't know. They didn't let her say a word and just kicked her out."
Gu Yueji finally understood why he had locked the door.
"Is that female worker long-haired, with fair hair, and a slightly round face?"
How did you know?
"Just now downstairs, she was looking at me like I was a rival in love."
"Wow, am I that charming?"
Gu Yueji glanced at him. "Are you feeling smug?"
