Chapter 9
“Sir Shen, oh no, Master Shen, you have a promising career, why do you do such a stupid thing?” The newly appointed Minister of War, Sir Wu, asked Shen Wangyou.
"Yes, yes." The adult next to him echoed.
Shen Wangyou raised his hand, touched his forehead and asked, “Master Wu, do I look stupid?”
These words made Lord Wu at a loss for words. After thinking for a while, Lord Wu put his hands behind his back, turned his head to one side, and snorted.
"Anyone who treats his career as a joke is naturally stupid."
Shen Wangyou narrowed his eyes, patted Lord Wu on the shoulder, and said, “Lord Wu, have you ever heard of a saying?”
Master Wu was confused and asked, "What are you talking about?"
Shen Wangyou laughed and said, "Fools have good fortune!"
"A rotten tree cannot be carved!" Lord Wu shook his sleeves and left with his colleagues.
Shen Wangyou looked at the figure of the departing person and sighed.
After a long time, Shen Wangyou walked down the stairs.
"Sir, is it done?" As soon as Shen Wangyou walked out of the palace gate, his subordinate Lin Yu asked.
Shen Wangyou took the reins, jumped on the horse, and said, "It's done, we'll leave tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?" Lin Yu looked at Shen Wangyou.
"What else?" Shen Wangyou asked back.
Lin Yu said a little embarrassedly: "Sir, are you kidding? Tomorrow is too rushed, and we haven't packed a lot of things yet."
Shen Wangyou stopped, turned around and looked at Lin Yu, and said: "Didn't I ask you to clean up a few days ago? Why didn't you clean up?"
"Sir, I, I..."
"Alright, alright, go back and pack your things quickly. No matter what, we have to leave tomorrow!"
"yes!"
When Shen Wangyou returned home, he began to pack his things. Before leaving, he took out a hairpin from under his pillow and placed it on his chest.
"Sir, something bad has happened."
In Shu, inside the military camp.
"Oh no! The enemy is attacking!" The sentry's voice resounded throughout the military camp.
Night fell, there was no moon tonight, and Lu Ling could only see the pitch black outside.
Soon, there were sounds outside, chaotic footsteps, rustling figures, and torches being lit.
"Soldiers, follow me to meet the enemy!" The army was ready to go, and Xie Heng said to the team standing in front.
Immediately, a huge group of people ran out of the military camp.
"Sister, what should we do?" Qingdai asked Lu Ling.
Lu Ling turned around and walked to the candlestick and lit the candle.
After lighting the candle, Lu Ling sat on the bed and looked outside the tent. He said, "We'll stay here and wait for them to come back."
"If you don't sleep, we will sleep too!" someone suddenly shouted.
"Yes, we still need to sleep!" the people in the tent echoed.
The candlelight flickered, and Lu Ling couldn't see the people in the tent clearly, so he turned to look at the source of the sound.
"Grandma Fang, the enemy is approaching, and all the soldiers in the barracks are out fighting the enemy, yet you're still sleeping."
Fang Qianqian didn't get angry when she heard this, but just said sarcastically: "You just got here, you're young, it's your first time encountering this kind of thing and you don't understand."
Fang Qianqian lay back on the bed, her tone proud: "General Xie is brave and good at fighting. Except for last time, General Xie has never lost a battle."
Last time, it was because Lu Ling’s father was falsely accused of hoarding military weapons that the Daliang army was defeated, and Daliang lost three cities at once.
Lu Ling recalled the scene before he was imprisoned. His whole family was busy preparing for his wedding, and he was immersed in great joy.
But I never thought that all my happy and perfect life would be shattered overnight.
The whole family was imprisoned, the father was sentenced to death, the mother died by hitting her head against the wall, and the person whom she loved with all her heart became her enemy.
Everything happened too fast and Lu Ling was still a little uncomfortable.
"Sister, sister." Qingdai saw that Lu Ling didn't say anything, so she reached out and pushed Lu Ling.
When Lu Ling came to his senses, he realized that he was crying.
"Auntie, are you okay?"
Lu Ling raised his hand to wipe away his tears, took a deep breath, and said, "It's okay, I just thought of something."
Qingdai didn't ask any more questions as everyone in the tent was asleep.
"Qingdai, you go to sleep, I'm going out for a walk." Lu Ling said.
"I'll go with you." Qing Daiyu stood up and walked with Lu Ling.
Lu Ling pushed Qingdai back onto the bed and said, "No, I'll be back soon."
There were many people patrolling outside with torches, and everything seemed tense except for the people in the logistics camp.
As Lu Ling walked out of the tent, he saw a figure not far away.
"Why did you come out?"
Lu Ling sat next to Zhang Xunwen, looked up at the sky and said, "I can't sleep, so I came out for a walk."
"What about you?" Lu Ling asked.
Zhang Xunwen leaned back against the stone and said, "Just like you, I can't sleep."
"Every time we go out and come back, some are dead, some are injured." Zhang Xunwen shook his head and said, "I don't know when this war will end."
"It would be great if the two countries could get along in a friendly manner," said Lu Ling.
Zhang Xunwen took the wine from somewhere and took a sip. Some of it flowed down his chin and into his neck.
"Naive! The King of Baipu is so arrogant, rude, and incompetent. How could he call a truce?"
After Zhang Xunwen said this, Lu Ling became a little curious.
"Have you met the King of Baipu Kingdom?"
Zhang Xunwen put down the wine jar in his hand and avoided looking at him. “No, I haven’t seen it. I heard it from the soldiers.”
Lu Ling nodded and agreed: "That's right, you have always stayed in the kitchen, how could you have seen the king of Baipu Kingdom?"
Lu Ling took Zhang Xunwen's wine jar and poured it into his mouth.
The wine was too strong, Lu Ling felt his throat was burning, and he couldn't help coughing a few times.
"Hey! Can you drink it? Just drink it?" Zhang Xunwen grabbed the jar of wine, poured it down, and found that all the wine was gone.
"You should at least leave some for me." Zhang Xunwen said helplessly.
Lu Ling's eyes became moist and his face turned red.
"Of course I will drink. I just haven't drunk anything so strong before."
As Lu Ling spoke, tears couldn't stop flowing down.
Zhang Xunwen looked at Lu Ling, feeling a little overwhelmed. Since he was a child, he was most afraid of girls crying.
"What's wrong with you? Don't cry!" Zhang Xunwen wanted to reach out and wipe away Lu Ling's tears, but he felt a little offended. He stretched out his hand halfway and finally stopped in mid-air.
Lu Ling slowly raised his eyes, as if he had returned to his home in the capital.
The red gauze hangs low, fluttering in the wind, the green branches are intertwined, the green backyard is mixed with red light, the corridor is hung with red lanterns, and a person is standing in the corridor.
The man was wearing black clothes and his black hair was draped over his shoulders.
"Forget your worries?" Lu Ling shouted.
The man in front of him slowly turned around, his thin lips tightly closed, and there was an indescribable indifference in his eyes, as if everything in front of him had nothing to do with him.
The man walked up to Lu Ling, looked at her outfit, and asked, "A Ling, why are you wearing a wedding dress?"
Lu Ling looked down at her clothes and saw that she was wearing a red wedding gown. Lu Ling raised her hand and touched her head and found that she was wearing a hair crown.
So that's how it is. No wonder I felt so heavy-headed just now.
The man took a step forward, touched Lu Ling's lips with his right hand, and said with a smile: "Our wedding date hasn't even arrived yet, why are you so impatient?"
Lu Ling suddenly thought of something, slapped Shen Wangyou's hand away, and then a slap fell on Shen Wangyou's face.
Lu Ling held his head, squatted on the ground, and said in pain: "Get out! You've ruined my whole family! I hate you! Get out!"
"A Ling, I didn't! Believe me."
Lu Ling adjusted himself, stood up and ran out.
Shen Wangyou behind him was still shouting, “A Ling, it’s not me, believe me, I will come to you!”
"Sister, sister, wake up." Qingdai woke up early in the morning and saw her mistress sleeping on the edge of a rock.
There were still tears in the corners of Lu Ling's eyes. The sunlight shone on Lu Ling's eyes, making Lu Ling squint unconsciously.
"Sister, why are you sleeping here?" Qingdai asked Lu Ling.
Lu Ling looked around and found that Zhang Xunwen had disappeared, and only Qingdai was left beside him.
"I drank some wine last night, it's okay." Lu Ling stood up.
"Let's go and get to work." Lu Ling pulled Qingdai towards the kitchen.
Qingdai usually doesn't care much about many things, except for Lu Ling's affairs.
Qing Dai looked at Lu Ling like a mother and said, "Sister, your cold hasn't healed yet. You slept outside last night. Don't catch a cold again."
Lu Ling listened and just said okay.
If I argue with Qingdai for a few more sentences, I'm afraid I'll be nagging you all day.
The two were walking on the road, and there were not many people in the military camp.
Usually at this time the soldiers were doing drills. The sounds of footsteps, drills and the gossip of the ladies in the logistics camp were really noisy.
But it suddenly became deserted, and Lu Ling felt empty inside.
When we walked into the kitchen, Zhang Xunwen, who was usually busy, was sitting aside, not cooking or preparing food.
Lu Ling approached and asked Zhang Xunwen, "What's wrong? Why haven't you cooked yet?"
Zhang Xunwen shook his head, looking at the pots and pans in front of him, and said, "I was just thinking about making some, but I haven't started yet. The people in the kitchen next door said they can do it today. There are fewer people today, so they don't need to make so much."
Zhang Xunwen stood up and said with a wry smile, "I forgot, they went to the battle last night."
"How long do they stay out for?" Lu Ling asked.
"At least two or three days, at most seven or eight days." Zhang Xunwen shook his head and said, "There's never a fixed number."
"Things on the battlefield are full of accidents. I just hope they can return safely." Lu Ling frowned and looked outside.
"You two can take a rest today. There is not much to do today, and there is nothing for you two to do." Zhang Xunwen said to Lu Ling and Qingdai.
Since nothing happened, Lu Ling and Qing Dai returned to the tent.
I thought there was no one in the tent, but I never expected that everyone was inside.
This is the advantage of being exiled to the military camp. If the generals go to war, you will have nothing to do.
But it's not without disadvantages. The court is afraid that you will leak information to Bai Pu, so they will send people to watch you from time to time. If the generals are in the barracks, you will have to work hard for them.
Therefore, most of those who were exiled to the military camp came from powerful families or had held important positions in the past.
The former was because of family connections, while the latter was because supervision by the court was required.
