Chapter 21: Exchange, Chicken

Ye Nuan led her inside. She glanced around the yard, her eyes widened, and she asked in surprise, "When did you plant the chives in your house?" When a group of them came the night before yesterday, there were no chives yet, and these small seedlings had not yet emerged.

Just one day and one night!

The little girl's face was filled with disbelief, and she was completely stunned. It wasn't until the puppy in her arms whimpered twice that she came to her senses and asked again, "Are you eating leeks?" She sniffed again and said, "No, there's another fragrance."

"It's chive and egg pancake." Ye Nuan invited her into the kitchen.

Jinqiu looked at the few golden and green pancakes left on the plate, swallowed his saliva, and forced himself to look away.

Snap!

Ye Xiaohu took a big bite and smiled with his cheeks puffed out: "Sister, it's delicious!"

The aroma penetrated Jinqiu's nose, and the crisp sound made her swallow twice more. She wanted to take a bite, but Ye Nuan didn't ask her to eat. The little girl was a little annoyed. She thought about the puppy in her arms and said, "My family has a litter of puppies. Do you want one for your family?"

The little black dog barked cooperatively. Its chubby body and round eyes made it look incredibly cute. Ye Xiaohu was immediately drawn to it, ate the biscuit in his hand, and moved closer to Jinqiu, circling around the dog.

"Sister, dog!" He looked at Ye Nuan, his eyes full of desire.

Ye Nuan was a little embarrassed. They could barely support themselves, so how could they raise another puppy? Such a chubby puppy would starve to death in two days.

Seeing her hesitation, Jin Qiu said unhappily, "Your house is in a remote location. Don't let thieves break in at night. Raising a puppy can help guard the house." She delivered it personally, but the Ye family was not happy about it, as if they were begging them to raise the puppy.

The little girl looked unhappy with a sullen face.

Ye Nuan thought so too. If she went out again, having a dog at home would make her feel more at ease. Xiao Hu loved the dog so much, he would definitely be sad if she said she didn't have one. Her spiritual spring had been upgraded, and the vegetables at home were growing. As long as she worked harder, it shouldn't be a problem to support her family and a puppy.

So he said, "Thank you, Miss Jinqiu."

Seeing her relent, Ye Xiaohu immediately went to pick up the puppy happily. Jin Qiu then stuffed the dog into his arms with satisfaction, but glanced at the plate next to him out of the corner of her eye.

The little girl couldn't hide her thoughts. Ye Nuan chuckled and handed her two cakes: "This is delicious, try it."

Jin Qiu swallowed his saliva and said awkwardly, "I don't want to eat it."

Ye Nuan simply stuffed it into her hand and said, "Yes, yes, I want Miss Jin Qiu to try it."

The corners of Jin Qiu's lips curled up and then immediately retracted, hesitatingly saying, "I don't want to eat it. I'll take it back for my mother to eat." Then he walked out in two steps.

As she walked, she glanced at the chive patch. She had never seen anyone's chives better than the Ye family's. She didn't say it outwardly, but in her heart she was praising them: Amazing!

After walking a long way out of the Ye family, he looked back and saw that there was no one there. He was delighted and quickly grabbed a piece of leek and egg pancake and stuffed it into his mouth.

Oh my god, it’s so delicious!

Jin Qiu nearly bit her tongue as she finished a piece of pancake in just a few bites. She wanted to eat the remaining piece but also wanted to leave it for her mother. As she was hesitating, Hu Ya passed by her, took one look at the chive and egg pancake in her hand, and praised, "Ah Qiu, it smells so good! Did your mother make this?"

Seeing her greedy look, Jin Qiu quickly wrapped the pancake in a handkerchief and stuffed it into his arms, shaking his head with a stern face: "No, it was given to me by Sister Ye. It's a chive and egg pancake."

Ye family's sister?

Why are they so affectionate? Hu Ya was very unhappy and asked again: "Where did she get the chives?"

"She planted it in her yard. It's lush green."

Hu Ya thought about Ye Nuan asking for dried leek roots and was a little skeptical: "How is it possible? Can the land in Dahuang Village grow anything green? What's so delicious about leek and egg pancakes? Come to my house and I'll treat you to meat buns."

Jinqiu was a little impatient. Everyone had eaten meat buns. Her father often bought meat for them.

"No, I'm going home." After saying that, he ignored her and walked away.

Hu Ya was a little annoyed. The Ye family was good at winning people's hearts. She had helped make bitter tofu before, and the villagers had praised her. Now they gave Aqiu leek and egg pancakes. Could it be that they really wanted to compete with her for Brother Jinbao?

She stood at the intersection for a while, then turned and went to Ye's house.

She wanted to see what kind of green chives could grow from the dying chive roots.

Hu Ya leaned over the courtyard gate and peeked inside. She immediately saw the emerald green chives in the west field. Her eyes widened in surprise: How did the Ye family grow these vegetables? They could even plant dead roots and make them grow so fast and so well.

The other vegetable fields were full of newly sprouted seedlings, each one uniform and fresh, which was nothing like what crops from the wilderness should look like.

Just as she was wondering, she saw Ye Nuan carrying a knife and walking out with the little one. The gate opened, and she took two steps back in fright, asking, "What are you guys going to do?"

Ye Nuan had also peeked into Hu Ya's yard before, so she wasn't curious when she saw her. She casually replied, "Go cut some bamboo sticks to tie the vines." The vegetables in her house grew fast, and the cucumbers and beans would probably start climbing soon, so they had to build a trellis first.

Woof woof!

Hu Ya looked down and saw a puppy in Ye Xiaohu's arms. She recognized the dog as it was from Jinbao's family. Her face immediately turned unhappy.

Staring at Ye Nuan's back as she walked away, he suddenly mustered up the courage to shout, "Hey, why do you always wear a headscarf? They all say it's because you're ugly, is that true?" It was quite unfriendly to expose someone's ugliness in public.

Ye Nuan in front didn't even turn her head.

Hu Ya stamped her feet secretly and ran home to tell her mother about Ye Nuan growing chives. She said angrily, "She's trying to please Jin Qiu. She even has the Jin family's dog at home. Mother, she's trying to steal Jin Bao from me. You have to think of a way!"

When Aunt Wu heard that Ye Nuan had grown chives alive, she was a little bit incredulous and asked several times. Hu Ya was impatient and said angrily: "Mom, I'm talking about Jinbao."

Aunt Wu said angrily, "If he wanted to marry you, he would have proposed long ago. How could he be snatched away by a girl from the Ye family? What's so good about a man who fools around all day and is so lustful? I want to see how she manages to survive." She turned a blind eye to her daughter's affair with Jin Bao. The Jin family was rich, and she wanted her daughter to marry him and enjoy the good life together, but that Jin Bao was nothing. In the wilderness, having food was the most important thing. If the Ye family had that ability, she would learn from them.

In just a short while, the news that Ye Nuan grew leeks using dying, dry leek roots spread throughout the village, and the villagers all ran to her house to see the curiosity.

Ye Nuan knew nothing of this. At that moment, she was leading Ye Xiaohu northward into the cypress forest. The cypress forest was close to Xueshen Mountain, and the weather got colder the further north you went. However, there was a patch of straight, withered bamboo around it, perfect for cutting down to make a climbing trellis.

Even though the bamboo wasn't thick, Ye Nuan was exhausted after chopping a large bundle. She trimmed all the bamboo, tied the branches together, and bundled the bare bamboo into a bundle. When everything was ready, she called out to her brother, and Ye Xiaohu and the puppy appeared from nowhere, their heads and bodies covered in a few pink morning glory flowers.

It’s pretty good looking too.

"Xiao Hu, where did you pick these flowers?"

Ye Xiaohu pointed, and Ye Nuan led him in the direction he pointed. On a slope, a cluster of sickly pale pink and lavender morning glories bloomed.

It would be nice if her fence was covered with morning glories. Ye Nuan cut down some bamboo and also pulled up two morning glories of different colors. Ye Nuan carried the bamboo in front, and Ye Xiaohu carried it behind. The two of them walked back effortlessly, and the black dog followed behind them.

When Ye Nuan arrived home, her yard was crowded with people, all looking into the vegetable patch. Ye Nuan stood behind them and peered in. The vegetable seedlings in the garden swayed in the wind, and her mother was fertilizing the chives with a bucket full of stove ash.

"Can you... move aside?" Ye Nuan coughed lightly twice.
