Chapter 23 Dare to Take Off the Headscarf

It took three people a quarter of an hour to catch the ten chicks and lock them up in the storage room.

Several seedlings in the vegetable garden were stepped on and bent, so Ye Nuan straightened them up and planted the morning glories she had dug along the wall. When the sun was not so strong, she watered the garden again with the spiritual spring water in the tank.

This time, she didn't dare use the water in the space, fearing that if she poured a spoonful of water in, the yard would be full of lush green vegetables tomorrow. There must be a limit to how fast things can grow; if they grew overnight, it would be too scary.

Raising chickens and dogs can't be too slow, half a month is not too exaggerated, right?

As the sun was about to set, Feng Dazhu knocked on the Ye family's door. Seeing Ye Nuan open the door, he blushed and felt awkward. He mumbled, "I got extra water today. My mother asked me to bring it to you."

The Ye family had three tanks of water, but even if they tried to be frugal, they'd only have one left for a few days. It was a good thing Feng Dazhu could help fetch water. Of course, she wouldn't let him do his work for nothing, so Ye Nuan gave him a bowl of chives.

Feng Dazhu repeatedly declined, scratching his head and saying, "No, that's not necessary. We're neighbors, and we should help each other." His face turned redder the more he spoke. Ye Nuan was suspicious and stuffed the food directly into his hands. "What are you talking about? It's not just one or two days. Your family is not short of food. You fetch me water and I give you food. Isn't it perfect?"

Unable to refuse, he had to accept it. Feng Dazhu handed the leeks to his mother. Mrs. Li shook her head angrily, "You kid, the girl gave it to you, and you really wanted it. Isn't this just a business transaction? You didn't get any favors at all."

Feng Dazhu muttered, "Mom, aren't we short of vegetables?"

Mrs. Li was so disappointed that she said, "Our family still needs a wife, why don't you marry one? Son, you need to have a long-term vision. The girl from the Ye family is so capable and kind. If you marry her, will you still be short of food for the rest of your life?"

“But, but…”

"What's the good thing? Go to the Ye family tomorrow and let the girl teach you how to grow vegetables. Take this opportunity to get more exposure."

Feng Dazhu couldn't persuade his mother and had to agree.

At the same time, Jin's Tao finished eating the chive and egg pancake her daughter brought her and muttered, "Why is there only one?"

Jin Qiu stared at the greasy and painful skin on her mother's fingers, "Mom, she only gave me two in total, and I didn't even give any to my eldest brother when he wanted to eat."

The pancake was crispy and sweet, and Tao's appetite was aroused. She was at a loss as to what to eat. Then, Aunt Wu happened to come to visit with Hu Ya, and she also had a plate of chive and egg pancakes in her hands.

"Sister Tao, I saw your daughter Jinqiu carrying two cakes during the day, so I asked Hu Ya to make some and send them over. Please try them." Aunt Wu pushed her daughter.

Hu Ya quickly brought the plate to Tao, who glanced at it and sniffed it.

Well, it's not as yellow and tender as the Ye family's, nor as fragrant as the Ye family's. She was craving it and couldn't help but pick up a piece and take a bite. Her face immediately fell, and she said bluntly in front of Aunt Wu, "It's overcooked. The fragrance is gone, and the taste is not well grasped. It's not half as good as the Ye family's."

Aunt Wu had always disliked Mrs. Tao, and after hearing what she said, she was so angry that her stomach ached. She grabbed her daughter and left. When she reached the door, she ran into Jinbao and was so angry that she dumped all the cakes into his hands. Jinbao didn't know what was going on, so he grabbed the hem of his clothes and went to catch them.

He shouted, "Can't you give me a plate?"

Aunt Wu snorted coldly: You little jerk, you still want a plate? I’ll give you a hammer!

Hu Ya, who wanted to talk, disappeared in an instant.

Jinbao was eating a chive and egg pancake as he walked back into the house. When he saw his mother and sister, he called out, "Mom, do you want some? They're quite delicious."

Tao curled her lips in disdain and sneered, "You are so rough-mouthed that you can eat anything."

Jin Qiu looked at her unruly brother, then at her mother, and asked, "Mom, is it really that bad?"

Tao said frankly: "It's not too bad, but compared with the Ye family's, it's terrible!"

The little girl usually looked at Ye Nuan with a frown, but she secretly admired her. She could grow vegetables, cook, was kind, and collected a lot of stones. She was much better than Hu Ya, who was always good at gossiping.

"Sister, one for me?" Jin Bao ate five in one go, his face growing even fatter. Jin Qiu waved his hands in disdain, saying, "You're just a glutton. You can eat anything." Otherwise, he wouldn't be getting fatter.

What's wrong with all these? Jinbao didn't dare touch the two Buddha statues at home, so he turned his grief and anger into appetite and ate all ten cakes in one go. At the end, he shouted, "I have a rough mouth, I can even chew my fingers." As he said this, he actually sucked his fingers.

Jin Qiu felt that her eldest brother's foolishness was truly unworthy of the one from the Ye family, and she wanted to kick him off the roof. The person in question was completely oblivious to his sister's disdain, and she stubbornly sucked each finger until it made a loud sound.

The next morning, Tao ran to uncover her daughter's blanket, howling like a ghost. Jin Qiusheng felt hopeless, puffing up his cheeks, looking cold and sickly, and asked, "What's wrong?"

"Aqiu, the Ye family's stuff is amazing! Your dad asked me early this morning what kind of makeup I used to make me look so good!"

Jin Qiu howled twice, pulled the quilt over him and went to sleep, saying in a muffled voice, "It's just a chive and egg pancake, what's the big deal?"

Mrs. Tao grabbed her daughter, who was hiding in the quilt. "As for you, get up! From now on, you don't have to learn embroidery. Go stay at the Ye family and see how she cooks and grows vegetables."

No embroidery?

Jin Qiuxing opened her eyes slightly and quickly got up. After getting dressed and washing herself, she took the old hen from the house and ran away. Mrs. Tao was so angry that she cursed, "You child, you take everything from others. Do you want to die?"

"Mom, if you want to learn something, you have to give a gift. I made a big bowl of chicken soup and brought it back to honor you. It will definitely be delicious."

Jin Bao was standing outside being scolded by his father. When he saw Jin Qiu coming out, he ran after her. Village chief Jin was so angry that he blew his beard and glared.

When the two of them ran to the Ye family's house, the yard outside the Ye family was full of people again. When they squeezed to the front, they saw that the vegetables in the Ye family's vegetable garden had grown a lot more, and Ye Nuan was tying a bamboo rack for a row of climbing vegetables.

Ye Nuan was genuinely frightened by the rapid growth of the beans and cucumber vines. Her mother started yelling early in the morning, so much so that she skipped breakfast and still hadn't finished pulling them all morning. The villagers gathered around, murmurs of surprise rather than envy.

Whose vegetable vines climbed so high overnight? Could it be buried on a dragon vein?

Feng Dazhu came over early in the morning and originally wanted to help, but after seeing Ye Nuan's skillful movements, he didn't know where to start.

After tying up the last bean vine, Ye Nuan straightened up and looked out at the yard. Jin Bao had already started to chase people away, yelling, "What's so good about this? You don't have any vegetables at home, right? Everyone, disperse and let me in."

Of course there are vegetables, but I have never seen any that grow so well or so fast.

Although everyone respected Village Chief Jin to some extent, Jin Bao - haha, didn't want to give this fat guy any face at all.

"Let's take a look. I want to ask the girl from the Ye family how she grows vegetables so well."

"Yeah, my chives are as withered and yellow as weeds, I wanted to ask that too."

"Yes, the green onions in my garden are as thin as hair, not as thick and green as those in Ye's garden."

"Yeah, the garlic seeds haven't responded in ten days since I planted them. Isn't that worrying?"

Jin Bao sneered: "It's been dry for ten days, why are you still planting? Go away!"

The two squeezed into the yard and saw Feng Dazhu. Jin Bao shouted again, "Why are you here?"

Feng Dazhu was always taciturn, covering his head with his head for a long time without saying a word. Jin Bao suddenly felt bored, pushed him aside and moved closer to Ye Nuan, smiling flatteringly: "It must be tiring to work with a headscarf on, let me help you take it off." As he spoke, he put his hand on Ye Nuan's face.

Ye Nuan frowned and stepped back, her voice cold: "No need!"

Jin Bao was relentless, cheekily pestering him, "Why not? Look, your forehead is sweating." He just wanted to see what the Ye family's girl looked like. Before his hand could even touch her, he was hit hard in the waist, sending him flying with a mouthful of mud.

Ye Xiaohu widened his eyes and snorted fiercely: "You, bad guy!"

There were vegetable fields all around, and Jinbao knocked over two garlic seedlings as he flew out. Ye Nuan felt distressed and pulled Ye Xiaohu over to teach him a lesson: "Xiaohu, don't hit people next time."

Jin Bao clutched his waist and wailed, thinking that Ye Nuan was sensible and was about to agree when she added, "It hit our vegetables, they'll be in pain."

Jinbao: “…” He is still no match for the food!

The door of the yard was pushed open, and Hu Ya ran to Jinbao like a gust of wind, and asked nervously with red eyes: "Brother Jinbao, where did you fall? Is it painful?" Someone was nervous, and Jinbao started to gasp for breath again, his eyes rolling around, looking at Ye Nuan.

Hu Ya understood that look perfectly. She couldn't contain her rage any longer and blurted out, "Brother Jinbao, she is ugly. She is an ugly freak with scars on her face. Everyone who has been to the village before knows that."

"What nonsense are you talking about?" Jin Bao pushed her away and stood up, looking Ye Nuan up and down, "She has such beautiful eyes and a good figure, how could she be ugly?" He had only flirted with Hu Ya a few times, and Hu Ya still relied on him.

Jin Bao's words seemed like a compliment, but they were actually insulting. No one would be happy to have their looks and figure discussed in public. The villagers gathered outside the Ye family's house to watch the fun, their eyes glued to Ye Nuan's face, trying to see through the rough headscarf what this capable young woman looked like.

Hearsay is just hearsay after all, everyone wants to see the real thing!

Hu Ya was pushed away, her face instantly distorted. She stood up and approached Ye Nuan, saying aggressively, "Ye family, do you dare to take off your headscarf and let everyone see what you really look like?"
