“Miss Jiang, don’t be in a hurry to refuse. Master Guo said that he doesn’t mind that you have a child with you. Madam Guo is a kind and generous person, so you don’t need to worry.”
“Master Guo’s family is wealthy and powerful. If you enter his mansion, you will be adorned with gold and silver and enjoy endless riches and honors. You should think it over carefully.”
After Wang the matchmaker finished speaking, she stared intently at Jiang Shuyue, observing her expression.
For many years, Wang, the matchmaker, has been arranging marriages and facilitating many ill-fated relationships with her silver tongue.
Jiang Shuyue didn't want to cause trouble for the Su family, so she suppressed her anger.
She said calmly, "Thank you for your kindness, Aunt Wang. My husband's family is a military family, and my brother-in-law has also been appreciated by the emperor and appointed as a deputy captain. When my mother-in-law learned that I had given birth to a son for her son who died on the battlefield, she will soon take me back to the capital."
Upon hearing Jiang Shuyue's words, Wang the matchmaker's expression changed.
It took the matchmaker a while to react, and she stammered, "This...this is good news, congratulations, young lady."
With so many prestigious families in the capital, how could a wealthy man from a small town dare to force himself to marry the sister-in-law of a deputy lieutenant? He's really bitten off more than he can chew today.
The matchmaker chuckled twice and then took her leave.
"Ouch!"
The matchmaker almost tripped and fell flat on her face as soon as she turned around.
"Aunt Wang, wait a minute."
Watching Wang the matchmaker leave in a sorry state, Su Nan clutched her stomach and laughed until she bent over.
While Wang the matchmaker was busy talking to Jiang Shuyue, Su Nan used his foot to move the stool behind her.
Su Nan was certain that she would bump into the bench as soon as she turned around.
After seeing Matchmaker Wang off, Aunt Su patted her chest in lingering fear.
"Moon, you don't know, that Master Guo in town is a real scoundrel. He bullies men and women and does all sorts of evil things because he has a lot of money. If he takes a fancy to a girl, he will find a way to take her back."
"Don't worry, Auntie. He's the kind of person who bullies the weak and fears the strong. I said those things on purpose today just to scare him."
"Sister, please don't go to the market in town anymore."
Jiang Shuyue rubbed Su Nan's head: "Okay, I'll listen to you. From today onwards, I won't leave the house."
When Jiang Shuyue returned to the old house, Qiuju and Su Hui rushed to greet her.
"Sister."
"Miss."
"It's nothing. Matchmaker Wang arranged a disgusting marriage, which I refused."
Jiang Shuyue spoke casually, but her heart was far from calm.
Guo, relying on his wealth, was notorious for his arrogance and lust, a reputation that was known far and wide.
Since the trouble was caused by having too much money, then I'll make sure he's penniless.
At night, the silvery moonlight streamed into the room through the window lattice, as if a layer of white gauze were hanging on the window.
Jiang Shuyue slowly opened her eyes; Qiu Ju in the next room had already fallen asleep.
Sui Sui's little hands tugged at her mother's undergarment, her breathing even as she slept soundly, as if afraid her mother would abandon her.
With a thought, Jiang Shuyue and her son disappeared from their spot and entered the space.
After settling Sui Sui in, Jiang Shuyue opened the wardrobe in her space. Since there were no black night clothes, she simply found a white outfit to change into.
A hairband gently gathered her dark hair behind her head. She left the space, tiptoed to the woodshed, and with a wave of her hand, put the long bamboo ladder back into the space.
Stepping out of the courtyard and into the bamboo grove, the bamboo shadows swayed in the moonlight, and the chirping of crickets rose and fell in the roadside grass.
Walking along the field ridges outside the village, a night breeze blew by, bringing a touch of coolness and driving away the lingering heat of the day.
From time to time, the croaking of frogs could be heard in the rice paddies.
Jiang Shuyue took a deep breath.
The air is fresh and fragrant, intoxicating.
Once outside the village and onto the main road, Jiang Shuyue conjured a horse on the road with a thought.
"Good boy, horse. They say you raise an army for a thousand days to use it for one. You've been eating and drinking well in my space for almost two years. Don't throw me off your back later."
Jiang Shuyue gently stroked the horse's head, as if she were speaking softly to it.
As if it were sentient, the horse slightly crouched down.
Jiang Shuyue gripped the saddle and climbed onto the horse's back, then tightened the reins and said to the horse, "Go slowly, let me get used to it for a while."
The horse snorted and walked forward at a leisurely pace.
It was Jiang Shuyue's first time riding a horse, so she didn't dare to be careless. She held the reins in one hand and the saddle in the other.
After walking for two miles, she gradually got the hang of riding a horse.
Horses are faster than mule carts, and in the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, Jiang Shuyue arrived in town.
The residence of the wealthy Guo family was not far from the archway at the entrance to the town.
The Guo family's house was the largest and most luxurious among all the wealthy households in the town.
Jiang Shuyue dismounted and rubbed her sore bottom.
With a thought, the horse vanished from its spot.
On the ground, her figure was elongated by the cold moonlight, and a few barks came from afar.
Jiang Shuyue gazed at the plaque above the tall gatehouse, the two large gilded characters of "Guo Mansion" gleaming in the moonlight.
Jiang Shuyue stood in front of the door for a moment, then quickly walked behind the wall.
Upon reaching the wall, she conjured a bamboo ladder before her with a thought.
After installing the bamboo ladder, Jiang Shuyue lifted her skirt and climbed up. Her movements weren't exactly nimble, but they weren't clumsy either.
She and Su Nan and Su Jin often went to the back mountain to pick herbs and mushrooms, and their physical strength was much better than before.
Climbing up the wall, one can see the back garden of the Guo family mansion. The night breeze carries the fragrance of flowers.
The shadowy tree shadows swayed sharply in the night wind, like ghosts.
Under the moonlight, the pavilions and towers are clearly visible.
Seeing that no one was around, she stood on the wall and lowered the bamboo ladder inside the wall.
Upon entering the Guo residence, Jiang Shuyue used her mind to retract the bamboo ladder into her spatial storage.
